Last night, Tuesday 3 December 2019, saw the attestation ceremony of Greater Manchester Police's latest 21 special constables.

The ceremony saw them swear the Police Oath in front of magistrate Stephen Paine JP and assume their powers as constables.

Special Constabulary Chief Officer Mike Walmsley and Assistant Chief Constable Nick Bailey welcomed the new recruits to the force.

The Special Constabulary works alongside the regular force with special constables having the same powers and responsibilities as full time officers.

The role of special constable is part-time and voluntary. The history of the office can be traced back to the Middle Ages.

The Force's Special Constabulary is an integral part of the wider policing family, providing a flexible, visible, responsive and committed resource which assists us to improve the service we deliver to the people,

Today, Monday 24 August 2020, saw Greater Manchester Police welcome the latest new recruits to the force.

The officers were officially sworn in during three, socially distanced, attestation ceremonies at the force's Sedgley Park Centre. The ceremonies saw the officers take the Police Oath and receive their police powers.

The events were attended by Chief Constable Ian Hopkins and officiating magistrate Stephen Paine JP.

New recruits have to complete a two year probation period. This includes a range of training inputs and a year of active patrol.

The new recruits are replacing those who have either retired or left the organisation and therefore helping GMP to maintain current officer numbers.
