O'Keefe and Merritt. Even though it looks like two, it's really just one big oven, meaning that there is just one temperature control Still very, very cool.

The only remaining oven in the kitchen on second floor. The exhaust hood is still in pretty good shape even though it has not been spared from having crude phallic imagery sprayed on.

These are the remains of the ovens at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp north of Berlin. I must admit to being taken aback at how comparitively small they were - I suppose because of the vast numbers of deaths involved, I was expecting much larger constructions.

Adolf Hitler filled this place with trades unionists and political opponents (including communists and social democrats); then came the gypsies, gays and Jews, and anyone else deemed guilty of ‘anti-social’ behaviour.

Today, Sachsenhausen is open to the public as a memorial, and it has an education centre so that young people in particular can see at first hand the horrors of the past. Many of the original buildings have gone – but many are still there, as reminders of the terrible past. I have to say that the German authorities pull no punches, and tell the story as it happened.

One of my favourite pass times is seeking out, the sadly abandoned, but achingly beautiful, traditional old houses, bridges and buildings in remote, Cypriot villages. They seem to become more beautiful over time. And I love their feeling of purpose and history. This old oven is at the side of an empty house on the outskirts of the village of Prodromos in the Troodos Mountains.

Now don't get any crazy ideas, people...these are the only buns I have in the oven.

Our contractor proposed adding shelves or cabinetry of some sort around the oven to make the countertops continuous. We'll be getting a new oven.

I've been without an oven for almost a year - it's a long story, not worth recounting. Recently, I finally got an operational oven in my kitchen once more! As my sister said when she heard it was happening, "It feels like the universe has shifted!" I think she may be right....

These are homemade oreo cookies. Alas, these are still too cakey, not chewy enough, no satisfying crunch on the outside, and not flat enough. Someday I will figure out how to get this right. For today, though, it is enough that I baked them in my own home!

These kind of ovens were used during second world to create coal for producer gas cars and trucks. This particular one most likely originates from that period.
