Multicolor illustrations of animals and sea creatures from Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms of Nature) by German zoologist, naturalist, professor, and marine biologist, Ernst Haeckel (1843–1919), in full Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckela. Haeckel was known for discovering and naming thousands of new species. Kunstformen der Natur was known for bridging the gap between science and art. We have digitally enhanced 100 marine lithographic prints of various organisms from his book. They are in high resolution printable quality and free to download under the CC0 license.

My "Treeple" I designed for the upcoming Crammed Organisms show in St. Louis, MO. Each tree has posable armature wire inside.

My take on a felt gingerbread man (I know there are plenty around, for sure!).

Felt gumdrop buttons, ricrac icing, and one big grin.

In the BioLab, the focus is on the human organism and the processes of life taking place on the cellular and molecular levels. Current scientific methods allow us not only to observe biological processes and make them visible, but also to intervene in them in many ways.

Neil Dawson's magnificent Chalice sculpture is located in Christchurch's Cathedral Square. Chalice celebrates the new millennium and the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Christchurch and Canterbury New Zealand.

This sculpture, by Andrew McKeowan, is situated in Saltburn, overlooking the sea, near the cliff lift.

It was commissioned by Groundwork South Tees as part of the redevelopment of the top promenade. There are other works by Andrew nearby and further up the coast at Seaham in County Durham.

Aspens typically grow in large clonal colonies derived from a single seedling, and spread by means of root suckers; new stems in the colony may appear 100-130 feet (~30–40 meters) from the parent tree. Many biologists don't refer to Aspen as individual trees or even groves (groups of trees) but each group is thought of as a single organism with all trunks (stems) sharing a common root system.

Each individual tree can live for 40–150 years above ground, but the root system is long-lived. In some cases, they survive for thousands of years, sending up new sprouts as the older trunks die off above ground. For this reason it is considered to be an indicator of ancient woodlands. One such colony in Utah, nicknamed "Pando", is claimed to be 80,000 years old, making it possibly the oldest living colony of aspens. Some aspen colonies become very large with time, spreading 3 to 4 feet (~1 meter) each year and eventually covering many acres.

Aspens are able to survive forest fires since the roots are below the heat of the fire, with new sprouts growing quickly after the fire burns out. The wood of aspen is soft and spongy. Aspen is a model of recycling efficiency; fallen autumn leaves are usually gone within a year and fallen trunks usually disappear without a trace in four to five years.

I really like the organelle detail in this motile organism. It has a rosy gold colour. Sample taken from algae coating submerged grass from Marsh Creek. 40x objective, DIC flash.

This is the flash set-up used for the butterfly wing images. The two flash guns are controlled by StackShot. A plastic ring clipped to the objective acts as a light diffuser and relay to give 360 degree diffused lighting. The LED light on the right is just for focusing.

Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) Michaelbrook Pond, Kelowna, BC.

This fella was definitely acting like Pond Boss, intimidating the Buffleheads, and then, when he spotted me, swimming right at me as if to chase me off, too....

From Wikipedia: "Muskrats are found over most of Canada and the United States and a small part of northern Mexico. They were introduced to Europe in the beginning of the 20th century and have become an invasive species in northwestern Europe. They mostly inhabit wetlands, areas in or near saline and freshwater wetlands, rivers, lakes, or ponds. They are not found in the state of Florida, where the round-tailed muskrat, or Florida water rat (Neofiber alleni), fills their niche.

Their populations naturally cycle; in areas where they become abundant, they are capable of removing much of the vegetation in wetlands. They are thought to play a major role in determining the vegetation of prairie wetlands in particular. They also selectively remove preferred plant species, thereby changing the abundance of plant species in many kinds of wetlands. Species commonly eaten include cattail and yellow water lily. Alligators are thought to be an important natural predator, and the absence of muskrats from Florida may in part be the result of alligator predation.

While much wetland habitat has been eliminated due to human activity, new muskrat habitat has been created by the construction of canals or irrigation channels, and the muskrat remains common and widespread. They are able to live alongside streams which contain the sulfurous water that drains away from coal mines. Fish and frogs perish in such streams, yet muskrats may thrive and occupy the wetlands. Muskrats also benefit from human persecution of some of their predators.

The muskrat is classed as a "prohibited new organism" under New Zealand's Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, preventing it from being imported into the country.

Trematode Metorchis conjunctus can also infect muskrats."

A view of a small non-descript street in Ahmedabad. Few years from now this street which has the houses of cardboard and paper recyclers along the right-side might not look the same. This runs parallel to the Bus Rapid Transport System(BRTS) of Ahmedabad, awarded and applauded world over. Along such a busy transport corridor, land prices are rising and developers are lining up to get a piece of the pie. Till then don’t feel lost and out-of-place if you wander into this little street. This is still in Ahmedabad.

Three astronauts were launched into space aboard a rocket designed by Professor Quatermass (Brian Donlevy), but the spacecraft returns to earth with only one occupant, Victor Carroon (Richard Wordsworth). Something has infected him during the spaceflight, and he begins mutating into an alien organism which, if it spawns, will engulf the Earth and destroy humanity. When the Carroon-creature escapes from custody, Quatermass and Scotland Yard’s Inspector Lomax (Jack Warner), have just hours to track it down and prevent a catastrophe.

“The Quatermass Xperiment” (a.k.a. “The Creeping Unknown” in the U.S.) is a Hammer Films Production based on a 1953 BBC Television serial by Nigel Kneale, called “The Quatermass Experiment.” The film produced by Anthony Hinds, directed by Val Guest, stars Brian Donlevy, Jack Warner, Richard Wordsworth, and Margia Dean.
