How many roadrunner can you see in these Oracle Arizona clouds? A little head and a bigger one?
Oracle, Arizona
One of the unique features of the Oracle Challenger III that Sean D. Tucker flies is that it has eight ailerons- note the inboard pairs on both the lower and upper wings, these control surfaces capitalize on the propwash to provide low speed maneuverability during his aerobatic routine.
The reason is that the split ailerons give him a higher roll rate without stressing out the hinges, cables, etc.- the inner aileron moves 80% of the outer aileron. A full span aileron would experience different forces along its length and stress it- shorter ones are less flexible- just like why a jetliner's leading edge slats are in segments instead of just one long slat- less stress on a shorter segment. On the Challenger III, just 80% of the travel of the outer aileron is all that's needed and it gets the bonus of catching the propwash.
