Officers from Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, the North West Ambulance Service and partners had a spooky time at a “Treacle” event in Alexandra Park, in Edgeley, yesterday, Tuesday 27 October 2015.
Treacle is the emergency services campaign to tackle issues around the Halloween and Bonfire Night period.
Yesterday’s event was fun a lot of fun but had an important message for young people.
Would-be trick or treaters were given advice on how to stay safe this Halloween.
Although the day is an opportunity for children to get dressed up and can be a lot of fun, it can also be distressing and intimidating for older and more vulnerable residents.
Advice has been published on the safe4autumn website and includes the following tips:
Don’t…
Trick or treat alone – go in a small group or with friends and family, after all it’s more fun if you’re in a group.
Go into anyone’s home – stay at the doorstep where your accompanying adult can see you.
Play pranks or damage property – damaging property is a criminal offence and can lead to your arrest and even a criminal record.
Demand money or intimidate anyone – while Halloween is something you’ve been looking forward to, it’s not for everyone, so be polite and show respect.
Throw eggs and flour – this could lead to your arrest.
Do…
Look out for Treacle posters – these will tell you if you’re welcome or not.
Be careful when crossing roads – during the dark nights you’re more at risk of an accident.
Go with an adult – responsible adults can help you if there’s a problem.
Wear clothes you can be seen in – wearing bright, reflective clothing or carrying a lamp or torch will mean that you are seen by drivers and others.
Respect your neighbours – don’t go trick or treating when it’s late, only knock or ring once, be prepared to take 'no' for an answer and remember to be polite.

What can I say about St Michaels? Well, I liked the church, however, those coming out of the church hall letting their children play in the gravestones! not very clever or nice if you ask me.
And then there is the church, all full of icons, shrines to St Mary and the air thick with incense, I guess this is about has high as you can get in Anglican.
Situated on a hill overlooking the old village set in a small valley, and over the road from the old Leper Hospital, the graveyard is overgrown, and is a Gothic nightmare if one were to come at night, all very large Victorian stones.
It is two weeks ago since we visited, so my memory is a little rusty, let's see what John has to say:

Most people visit the chapel of St Nicholas Hospital in Harbledown, which is just as much a place of pilgrimage today as it was in the Middle Ages. However, the nearby church of St Michael is full of character despite the fact that it dates in the main from 1880. The south aisle is part of the original Norman church - one blocked window survives - and there is a damaged thirteenth-century piscina. There is also an unusual piece of carved stone of uncertain age which represents two bulls fighting, with a sun above them. The architect for the enlargement of 1880 was J.P. St Aubyn - never the most sensitive of architects. There is some pleasing nineteenth- and twentieth-century glass including a rare representation of the Search for the Holy Grail.

On hilltop (c. 160ft. above sea level) in centre of village immediately north of sunken main road from London to Canterbury. Blean forest to north.
Until 1825, there was only a simple nave and chancel. Then a 'north transept' was built. This was demolished when the architect, St. Aubyn built a new chancel and nave (and north porch) along the north side of the old chancel and nave in 1880-1.
The original nave is early Norman, with Quarr stone quoins on the south-west corner. Also Quarr stone voussoirs in round arch above door on S.W. side of nave. The original extent of the nave to the east is marked by a 'megalithic' block of ragstone 3/4s of the way along the south wall. The coursed whole flintwork of the west wall of the original nave is also early, and there is a blocked round-headed window in the upper gable wall (also ? Quarr stone quoins). Inside the church the remains of rere-arch of another round-headed window has been uncovered in the south wall of the nave, and Petrie's early 19th century drawing appears to show another on the north side. There is the remains of a possible piscina in the south wall near the east end of the original nave. Nearby the so-called 'stone of Mithras' is set into the wall (it was discovered in 1881 and is perhaps medieval).
The nave was lengthened eastwards and a new chancel was built perhaps in the 13th/14th century. Only the rere-arch of the east window is medieval. The other windows and the chancel arch were all totally restored in 1880-1. There is the remains of a medieval crown-post roof in the nave, and of a little timber bell-turret above the west-end of the nave (probably late medieval, but supported internally in the roof by 19th century timbers. It is weather-boarded, but Hasted describes it as shingled. It contains 4 bells: Hatch, 1603; Palmer, 1670; and Henry Jordan (1442-68) inscribed 'Sancte Katerina ora pro nobis'.
A west gallery and timber porch outside the west doorway are said to have been demolished in 1879. Also a 'Tudor' arch is said to have been replaced as the original chancel arch by the present one in 1881. In 1979 the original chancel was partitioned off behind the arch and become the vestry with a W.C. and upper room.
A new door was cut on the south-east. The north transept, built in 1825 in brick (with a slate roof and timber window-frames and a gallery), was cased in flint and stone in 1855. A new high tiled roof and gable was built, and the windows were replaced in stone. This was swept away in 1880-1, when the new larger nave and chancel were built, with an arcade of three arches to connect with the old church. An organ was installed in the old chancel (moved to the west end of the south aisle in 1979).
BUILDING MATERIALS (incl. old plaster, paintings, glass, tiles etc.): Early Norman quoins of Quarr stone, also ragstone + Caen stone. The main material is flint. Restoration in 1880-1 in ? Bath stone.
CHURCHYARD AND ENVIRONS:
Size: - ? c. 2 acres.
Shape: Large L-shaped churchyard, still in use. Earlier burials around the church with great 19th and 20th century extension to the north and north-west.
Condition: Good.
Earthworks:
adjacent: - but very deep sunken main road (A2) to the south.
Building in churchyard or on boundary: Large 19th century rectory just to the east (and new small rectory alongside).
HISTORICAL RECORD (where known):
Earliest ref. to church: (Indirectly) Tithe of 200 sheaves mentioned in foundation charter of St. Gregory's Priory (1086-7).
Late med. status (rectory: List of rectors from 1316.
Patron: The Archbishop.
Other documentary sources: Hasted IX (1800). 18-21.

These scans come from my rather large magazine collection. Instead of filling my house with old moldy magazines, I scanned them (in most cases, photographed them) and filled a storage area with moldy magazines. Now they reside on an external hard drive. I thought others might appreciate these tidbits of forgotten history.

This was my first attempt at Bulgarian (or whatever nationality claims them) pancakes - palačinka. Kind of like French crepes, but a bit thicker and greasier.
The basic recipe is super easy:
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk or water
1/3 cup flour
You can add 1/4 cup sugar (I added 2 Tbsp) if you want sweet pancakes. Beat it all up into a batter and fry it on a hot, oiled cast-iron skillet or crepe maker. This made two large plate-sized pancakes, which is more than enough for one person. In fact, it's probably enough for two people, but no one else was home so I ate them both.

Visit Amazing Hong Kong | Victoria Peak or The Peak on Hong Kong Island
Locally called The Peak, officially called Victoria Peak but administratively it is called Mount Austin, 552m or 1,811 ft in height, historically home to the very wealthy since the late 19th Century, US$100 - US$150 Million + homes are very common, the most expensive house (The Pink House on Pollocks Path) sold for US$410 Million in 2017. (Now demolished)
Fabulous skyline views of Victoria Harbour and the City are why The Peak should be your number one priority to visit and it is served by the iconic Peak Tram ( Funicular Railway ). The highest viewing point for the iconic city view is from the Peak Tower (428m or 1,400ft) and roughly the same for a point on Lugard Road which joins up with Harlech Road to circle The Peak.
The Iconic and world famous Peak Tram which has been running since 1888 re-opened for business on 27th August 2022 after a major upgrade covering every area of the "attraction" including almost doubling the capacity of the tram by using brand new carriages, the new 6th Generation Green Tram has a capacity of 210 passengers.up from 120.

The most astonishing Hong Kong city view is from a very specific point on Lugard Road (called the Lugard Road Lookout) roughly a 20 minute scenic walk from the Peak Tower (ish), closely followed by a specific point on Barker Road, nice views can still be had from the Peak Tower (requires a hefty payment) the Peak Galleria (free) and the Lion’s Pavilion (free) - there is NO city or harbour view from Victoria Peak Garden.
... and did I mention the night view of the City? On a clear night the view from any location mentioned above is quite staggering and from the Lugard Road Lookout it takes your breath away.
The best views occur in the Hong Kong summer from May to September with beautiful clear and sunny days particularly in July and August and naturally it is 32oC ish (90oF) with 90% humidity! Autumn and Winter in Hong Kong can be grey, cool, cloudy but on sunny days - WOW! Spring can be humid and very foggy - bear in mind even on grey cloudy days it can still be very clear at The Peak.

More fun with the Pro HDR iPhone app. The program automatically analyzes the scene, takes two exposures and merges them within seconds, producing some pretty impressive results. All I had to do was keep the phone relatively steady. A little extra post-prod done in PS for white-balance, sharpening and noise reduction.
