Is it a window of opportunity?

The biggest opportunities don't announce themselves with trumpets and bright lights. They hide quietly, waiting for those who have the vision to see them and the commitment to follow them.

Life's most valuable opportunities are completely invisible to people who seek instant gratification. Those opportunities wait patiently for someone who is persistent enough and motivated enough to give them the time and devotion they deserve.

A person who has no concern or respect for others has no way of connecting to the most worthwhile opportunities. For the most grand and valuable opportunities are, at their heart, opportunities to serve and to create value for others. It cannot be seen by the person who demands a sure thing, or who expects to reap large reward with little effort. Because the best opportunities derive their value from the risk and effort necessary to bring them to fruition.

Just like that, most beautiful heights are often overlooked because they first appear much smaller than most people expect. Yet these are easily spotted by those who understand that seeing the peak is just the beginning.

These beautiful heights are hidden in the smallest of moments. See them, understand them, and they can lift you to incredible heights.

This is one of the most exciting things I have ever done and I shall never forget it. We had an opportunity to feed two of the large cats at the Cat Sanctuary. The choice was a lion, tiger, cheetah or snow leopard. Only two of us chose the lion and we both said we were so glad that we did as it was an incredible experience more so than the other cats. Phill wasn't keen but in the end I coaxed him into feeding the snow leopard. I ended up feeding a tiger and a white tiger as well as Phill let me have his other turn. But the lion as you can see was the most awesome of them all and no I wasn't afraid just star struck:-) His name is Kasanga.

A saleswoman's face is reflected on the glass showcase as she arranges gold jewelry with a long pair of tongs. Gold is highly valued in many Asian societies, as it carries cultural symbolism, social status, and investment value. Globally, the Chinese and Indians are the largest buyers of gold jewelry, as gold is often given as a dowry during traditional Indian and Chinese weddings. Even though the US holds the world's largest reserve of gold bullion, it ranks a distant 3rd place when it comes to consumption of gold jewelry.

A great opportunity, a fresh start, everything is possible... so why I feel myself so freaky? This whole new year is like this 52 week challenge for me: both a source of opportunity and blockage. Today is the last day of the first week, the last day for posting a picture. I almost failed to produce anything. But at the very end, I think this blank page is really what I got today. With all its good and bad sides.

I had the opportunity to follow the Blue Thunder Marching Band for the duration of their stay in Las Vegas. Prior to the game, I covered their appearance at the pep rally with a video which can be found here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5H1S-04pZGY

Fans and alumni were invited to join team representatives, cheerleaders, and the bands and mascots at the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas Pep Rally under the historical lights at the Fremont Street Experience. Interactive contests, the battle of the bands, and the various dance-offs entertained fans in attendance.

It was a spontaneous shoot, as one of my friends told me she was coming into town with her college band and thought it would be cool for me to film the pep rally. I had a really great time shooting everything, as well as seeing the ridiculously spirited BSU crowd.

It is rare that I get an opportunity to photograph Purple Emperors as it is a long journey from Yorkshire. But I was down south for my son's graduation and it did not seem too much of a detour. This freshly-emerged male was imbibing salts from the forest track. This is a habit that is peculiar to males (though I have once observed a female Purple Emperor taking salts). Research has shown that the caterpillar's diet is low in Sodium, but if males take in Sodium it aids their reproductive success. The Sodium ions can be transferred to the female during mating and helps egg survival. Research has also shown that Monarch butterfly caterpillars that feed in the salt splash zone of roads develop stronger flight muscles than butterflies reared away from roads with lower Sodium levels.

I had the opportunity to go to Iowa City, IA to see and photograph the Bald Eagles, they put up a nice show for some great photo opportunities!

Do you ever get really stressed editing a photo because it works really well edited in multiple different styles and you can't decide which one to use? As you may have guessed, I do! I suppose you can say I do have "signature" actions and techniques I turn to, but I think I'd get bored very quickly if I stuck to my defaults all the time. Warm colors, cold colors, no colors...high contrast, low contrast...textures, no textures...sometimes a photo picks its style immediately for me, sometimes I run through a ton of options before settling, like with this one (I edited two others from the same set in different styles). The struggle is real! #photoshopproblems

that one time you were driving across country and didn't have the right lens to shoot the biggest harvest moon in memory rising between clouds off the horizon down the center of a hallway of evergreens.... but you stopped anyway, and took the shot anyhow with what you had so that you'd remember... :)

Opportunities to get out and make new pictures are, of necessity, limited during the COVID-19 outbreak so, from 1st April 2020, I've been hunting through my archives to find images taken on the same date in previous years. I've tried to choose eight each day. They've mostly not been published here before and potentially cover the period 1980-2020. I hope you enjoy them.

The giant panda is a so-called conservation reliant vulnerable species. For many years the panda was considered endangered, but in March 2015, the wild giant panda population increased by 268, or 16.8%, totalling to 1,864 individuals. In 2016, the IUCN reclassified the species from "endangered" to "vulnerable”. That’s good news, but the giant panda population is still far from healthy.

Habitat loss and extremely poor reproductive skills are the main reasons the panda is struggling. A fortune is being spent every year to save the panda, and it’s only because of the incredible cuteness factor of this charismatic animal that the conservation efforts have been succesful.

It was a real joy to watch these funny creatures in real life, and it reminded me of this important piece of oriental wisdom:

Always be yourself.

Unless you can be a panda,

then be a panda.

If you would like to photograph giant pandas yourself, then check out our China’s Endangered Wildlife photo tour: www.squiver.com/tours-workshops/china-wildlife-2017/

Not only will we photograph these über cute animals, we will also photograph the endangered Golden snub-nosed monkeys and Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys in their beautiful forest habitat. These monkeys are incredibly photogenic and funny looking, and this is the first and only tour in the world that offers you this opportunity.

So if you’re done photographing elephants, lions, bears, foxes and eagles, and you’re in for something truly unique, then this will get you the shots very few other people have.

Had an opportunity last Monday to do a little birding just east of Asheville, N.C. after attending a conference in Tennessee the previous 4 days. I have always wanted to get additional Black-throated Blue Warbler shots as I really had only one decent image I took in PA several years ago.

It took me quite a few miles and listening for singing until I finally found this guy in the preferred Rhododendron thickets on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Elevation there was at least 3,500-4,000 feet above sea level.

No question, this is one lovely bird!!

EXIF data shows bird 11.2 meters away or 36.7 feet.

These wings were painted on a wall in Daventry back in 2022, during an anti violence event. People were encouraged to stand between the wings, and submit their photos to a site...... I haven`t got round to it yet, and know I definitely won`t at any time in the future. I am sure many have taken shots here over the last year or so though.

The wonderful thing about puddles everywhere is it presents you with the opportunity to shoot locations you've done previously in new and unique ways. This is an angle I likely would have never shot in a vertical if not for the wonderful puddle that drew me to this spot to shoot for the reflection. Without the puddle you'd just have a lot of boring floor in the majority of the picture which isn't very interesting. Now if only I had someone climbing the pyramid it would really finish off the image! And to think I only missed the opportunity by a few days.

I shot this with the Nikon 14-24 2.8 (I'm a broken record, I know) and as I've mentioned previously I was dealing with drizzle constantly through the night. It was less of an issue with this shot however as the camera was pointed more towards the ground to capture the reflection. I find the distortion of the Nikon 14-24 really interesting when shooting like this as it seems to create almost an invisible swooping leading line from the bottom to the top of the image. Maybe I'm just imagining things but I swear it does to me.

This was a very straight forward edit with a single exposure for my base layer and 2 under exposures that I masked in using luminosity masks to control the highlights. You may wonder why not just use the one correct exposure to blend the highlights and the reason I like to use more than 1 is I can get a more realistic transition from the highlights to the midtones. Blending the huge jump from the shot exposed for the shadows to the shot exposed for highlights alone just creates too sharp of a transition. Using a go between exposure really helps create a beautiful transition from the highlights to the midtones. Enjoy.

We had moved 5meters away from our things, rucksack, camera bag etc. -not realizing that the fox might be interested in them...

There was no food in there, we had fed her already.

Suddenly she launched and took the camera bag, where my lens was!!!

I was shooting photos when I saw her running away with it.

John ran after and luckily found the bag untouched in the woods ;)

The fox had just dropped it without tearing it.

Just a few minutes later she came back to us like nothing had happened.

When I got home I saw I captured the theft.

Yes, we learned our lesson...;)

This was my first shoot with the lovely Madison - we chatted about shooting while I was in Venice and pulled it off shortly after my return. Madison was so energized and involved in planning the shoot - I loved that. We shot at the Caldwell Train Depot on a cold night that had her turning blue. Ron Richards brought his beautiful new Harley Fat Boy and Madison did the rest. What an absolute delight to shoot with! Be aware - she is very tall. This was a great shoot - hopefully the first of many! I took these photo in March 2020.

Remember the day I borrowed your brand new car and I dented it?

I thought you'd kill me, but you didn't.

And remember the time I dragged you to the beach, and you said it would rain, and it did?

I thought you'd say, "I told you so." But you didn't.

Do you remember the time I flirted with all the guys to make you jealous, and you were?

I thought you'd leave me, but you didn't.

Do you remember the time I spilled strawberry pie all over your car rug?

I thought you'd hit me, but you didn't.

And remember the time I forgot to tell you the dance was formal and you showed up in jeans?

I thought you'd drop me, but you didn't.

Yes, there were lots of things you didn't do,

But you put up with me, and you loved me, and you protected me.

There were lots of things I wanted to make up to you when you returned from Vietnam.

But you didn't.
