The whole reason for the trek to Tjørnuvik on the northeastern tip of Streymoy was to get a glimpse of those two sea stacks away on the horizon and at the foot of that cliff. They are Risin og Killingin, the giant and the witch. Legend has it that they snuck over from Iceland in an attempt to tow the Faroes home with them. They goofed. The sun rose and they were turned to stone.
This could have been shot all in sunlight or the stacks emphasised. But either would detract from this scenery. This is a broad, flat black sand beach. The stacks are on the adjacent island of Eysturoy, separated by the Sundini Sound which sits behind that black prominence on the right. Behind the beach is the tiny hamlet of TjørnuvÃk. It seemed empty apart from visitors. It was not.
Risin is the stack furthest from the cliff. Killingin, his wife has her legs astride forming an arch. Like all sea stacks they are temporary structures. When one or both of them falls I wonder what will happen to the mythology?
