The African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), also known as the African savanna elephant, is the largest living terrestrial animal with bulls reaching a shoulder height of up to 4 m (13 ft). Both sexes have tusks, which erupt when they are 1–3 years old and grow throughout life.

It is distributed across 37 African countries and inhabits forests, grasslands and woodlands, wetlands and agricultural land. It is a social mammal, traveling in herds composed of cows and their offspring. Adult bulls usually live alone or in small bachelor groups. It is a herbivore, feeding on grasses, creepers, herbs, leaves and bark.

Since 2004, it has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. It is threatened foremost by habitat destruction, and in parts of its range also by poaching for meat and ivory.

They can weigh 7 t (7.7 short tons). The heaviest male on record weighed 10.4 t (11.5 short tons) and was shot in 1974 in Angola. Females are much smaller at about 2.2–2.6 m (7.2–8.5 ft) tall at the shoulder and up to 4 t (4.4 short tons) in weight. Elephants attain their maximum stature when they complete the fusion of long-bone epiphyses, occurring in males around the age of 40 and females around the age of 25.

Statuette of Tauret dedicated by the designer Parahotep (1292-1190 BC - New Kingdom - 19th dynasty) - painted wood 41 x 17 x 21.5 cm. -

Provenance Deir el-Medina - Egyptian Museum, Turin, Italy

The goddess Tauret-whose name literally means "the great one"-has the body and head of a hippopotamus, tail and back of a crocodile, and lion paws, all animals known for their aggressiveness in protecting their offspring. As a deity worshipped mainly in domestic settings, she has no temples or colossal statues dedicated to her: small terracotta and wooden statuettes were usually placed in homes to protect newborns or to promote fertility.

Rouget's Rail (Rougetia rougetii) is only found in Eritea and Ethiopia, and I used the title rather rare because I liked the alliteration but IUCN class them as near-threatened. They prefer marshy ground but also occur in drier habitats, but always above 1500m altitude. One chick was seen accompanied by several adults which suggests cooperative breeding but this is likely to be unpaired offspring from previous broods helping their parents raise young. Their name and scientific names commemorate a 19th Century French explorer who collected in Ethiopia. I photographed this one in Gaysay grasslands in Ethiopia's Bale Mountains.

AC-4 Continues to amaze. So the oldest and last remaining California Condor in the wild from the original 22 birds taken into captivity in the mid-1980s has another story to tell. He was released back into the wild after 30 years of captive breeding in 2015. The following year he fathered a wild chick born in the same area he was born in in Santa Barbara County almost 40 years ago. Well, earlier this year an untagged juvenile showed up that AC-4 was observed hanging out with. This would have been normal if it were not for the fact that shortly after AC-4 paired off with female #654 last year (and an egg was confirmed between them) #654 was assumed deceased after a loss of tracking signal. Condors split duty between father and mother incubating eggs and feeding newborn chicks. In order for this untagged juvenile to be the offspring of AC-4 that meant AC-4 would have had several weeks of incubating the egg and many months of supplying food to the youngster by himself. A task that was deemed impossible. And here's the "well". Well, DNA results are in ... AC-4 is the father. So what was thought impossible, was not impossible at all, at least not for AC-4. The fact that we have California Condors still here today is an accomplishment of not only the hard work of the dedicated biologists, handlers, Rangers, DNA experts, surgeons, veterinarians and hunters who have switched to non-lead ammunition ... but also because of the incredible will to survive and adapt of these birds. If you're in Ventura or Santa Barbara County and happen to see a Condor with an orange tag with the black numbers 20 on it, tip your hat, you're seeing something legends are made of. Way to go AC-4.

A male giraffe calf born on April 30th has joined the herd of Masai giraffes at the San Diego Zoo’s Urban Jungle exhibit. This is mom Harriet's fifth calf and the first offspring for sire, Fred. The 157-pound male calf is getting loving attention from his experienced mom and can be seen in the maternity barn at the right side of the giraffe exhibit.

With last week’s news that U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had conducted an initial review of an Endangered Species Act (ESA) petition to list giraffes as endangered, each birth is a boost of hope for the species. Giraffes are listed as vulnerable on The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of endangered species, with population declines of up to 40% in the last 30 years.

San Diego Zoo Global supports a community conservation effort in northern Kenya that is finding ways for people and wildlife to live together. Guests who visit the Zoo’s giraffe exhibit can purchase high-fiber biscuits that can be fed to the giraffes, and the money raised helps fund the non-profit’s community conservation work in Africa.

flickr, it's been awhile!!! :) so I've been lacking when it comes to uploading. I wish I could say I've been busy, but I've been kind of in a funk when it comes to my work lately, so I haven't even been taking pictures or trying to think of ideas. :( i'm still not all the way there, but it's something i'm working on, and i'm hoping this is a step in the right direction. :)

anyways, with this picture, the idea I had with it, is kind of like 'she's the black sheep in the family' thing. every family has one, and sometime without realizing it, we cast them aside almost. and it's not that they are always bad people, they are just different, and I think it scares people. so yeah, I hope that made sense? ha, I promise, one day i'll get good at using words to describe my photos. ;)

so I hope everyone is doing well! and hopefully i'll be on here a lot more! I only work at gamestop now, so only having one job frees up my time a bit. ;)
