About the 1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
1996 saw minor mechanical revisions beyond the 1995 Camaro, as well as small power gains from the new OBD II-compliant engine controls. V8 models still came with the 5.7L LT1 engine. The dual catalytic converters required by OBD-II resulted in lower restriction and a mild power boost to 285 hp (213 kW) and 325 lb·ft (441 N·m) of torque.

As you are aware, the Launch X-431 has a number of 16-pin OBD II-style plugs, OBD II 16C and CAN 2 are by far the most popular fitments. Although the machine generally tells you what plug to use, this is only after you have connected to the car, so valuable time can be lost.

We busted out the toolbox to deal with some annoying issues that are
little VW TDI has been having. The check-engine light has been on for
months due to a issue with the glow plugs. I watched a video about
checking for bad glow plugs as well as changing them. Wendy and I then
went out to the car with a multimeter and confirmed all the glowplugs
had the same resistance (~ 1 ohm). We decided the issue was probably a
lose harness so we pressed it back on and zero'd out the code.
Next up on the list was a flashing glow plug signal. The VW forums
suggest this to be a dead breaklight or misconfigured break switch. We
confirmed the lights were working and after the OBD-II zero out the
issue went away.
Finally, the passenger door handle was not opening the door from
inside the vehicle. We pulled off the door cover and reattached the
cable had fallen out of it's hook.
I can only imagine what a dealership would charge for this kind of
work ($100 minimum?).
Most vehicles made after 1996 have a standard plug below the steering
wheel. This allows for reading and clearing of any maintenance issues
with vehicle. At the moment we have a dead glow plug which we need to
replace and clear the error code for. Rather than having the local
auto stores read us and clear the codes we decided to just purchase a
$20 tool off Amazon. This is part of our commitment to avoiding
overpriced mechanics who do mediocre to low quality work. We can do
our own low quality work for much less!

The OES5 Scanner is specially designed to work with all OBD 2 compliant vehicles,includinng those equipped with the next generation protocol--Control Area Network(CAN).it is required by EPA that all 1996 and newer vehicles(cars and light trucks) sold in the United States must be OBD 2 compliant and includes all Domestic,Asia and European vehicles.

it allows you to view the internal engine parameters in real time, as well as to check fault codes!
From what I've been able t tell, the 2002 VW Polo uses the KWP2000 protocol, and the ELM327 chip knows how to interpret that and many other protocols to present a text-based serial interface (via bluetooth in this case).
Now, I just have to wait a few weeks for my OBD dongle to see if it's all true...

So I've had this scan tool sitting around, and was itching to do something interesting with it...
Lay person's version: I used the scan tool to figure out *exactly* how much it cost me to drive 3.1 miles from Southern's campus. Specifically, I calculated miles per gallon every 1.5 seconds. I also calculated the total amount of the fuel that was burned, and then assumed $4 gas to figure out that the trip cost me 56 cents.
This is a plot of data gathered while driving from the SAU campus to Poplar Grove Dr (approximately 3.1 miles from campus). The vehicle is a 1998 Honda Accord, 4 cylinder, manual transmission, 200k miles. Time is shown on the bottom axis; the trip took approximately 6 minutes to complete. The blue line shows miles per gallon at that point in time. I averaged 22 miles per gallon. Assuming $4 per gallon of gas, the red line indicates the amount of money spent on gas for the trip so far. A total of 0.14 gallons were burned to complete the trip, at a cost of $0.56. A round-trip therefore costs $1.12, disregarding elevation differences on each trip.
For comparison, an electric vehicle would use less than 10 cents to make this trip (one-way; two-way would possibly be slightly more).
Equipment used: ELM323-based scan tool, USB-to-RS232 adapter, and my tablet PC.
Procedure: The ELM323 scan tool can capture a single sample at a rate of 2.7 Hz. Four sensor values are needed for the calculation: MAP, IAT, RPM, and VSS. Therefore MPG can be calculated at a rate of 0.68 Hz, or a new sample every 1.48 seconds. The software was set up to log this data while the drive was performed. A volumetric efficiency of 80% was assumed for the 2.3 liter engine. Molar mass of air is assumed to be 28.97 g/mol. The ideal gas law is then applied to calculate air flow. Stoichiometric ratio of 14.7 is assumed (this is correct once O2 sensors are returning proper values; this happens within seconds on most vehicles). The resulting gas flow value is then easily applied to calculate MPG and cumulative fuel consumption.
Improvements:
The most important task to do would be to perform a calibration to determine the real volumetric efficiency of the engine. This would involve analyzing the sensor values while a known volume of gas was burned.
The next task to perform would be to calibrate the VSS. This is typically inaccurate due to the variations in tire diameter, etc. Calibration will be trivial if I use a GPS to calculate speed (GPS doesn't lie) and compare those samples with the VSS samples.
The IAT sensor does not change quickly compared to the other sensor values; MPG calculation sampling rates could be increased by sampling the IAT less frequently than the others.
Another method to increase sampling rates may be to choose a different scan tool; the ELM323 uses a weak Microchip PIC16 microcontroller to interface with the OBD-II connector. A tool with a faster microcontroller could likely achieve higher sampling frequencies.
