Siproeta stelenes (malachite) is a neotropical brush-footed butterfly (family Nymphalidae). The malachite has large wings that are black and brilliant green or yellow-green on the upperside and light brown and olive green on the underside. It is named for the mineral malachite, which is similar in color to the bright green on the butterfly's wings. Typically, the wingspread is between 8.5 and 10 cm (3.3 and 3.9 in). The malachite is found throughout Central and northern South America, where it is one of the most common butterfly species. Its distribution extends as far north as southern Texas and the tip of Florida, to Cuba as subspecies S. s. insularis (Holland, 1916), and S. s. biplagiata, and south to Brazil.
Adults feed on flower nectar, rotting fruit, dead animals, and bat dung. Females lay eggs on the new leaves of plants in the family Acanthaceae, especially ruellia. The larvae are horned, spiny, black caterpillars with red markings.
Malachites often are confused with Philaethria dido. They have similar coloration, but their wing shapes are different.

Heliconius clysonymus is distributed from Honduras to Peru. In Colombia it is found in the 3 Andean mountain ranges between 1.200 and 2.300 meters. They are seen in deforested areas and small patches of forest, where they feed on nectar and pollen. The Heliconius are among the longest-living butterflies.

This is one that I have dug out of the archives dating back to 2008 when I was using my old Olympus camera. Quite a rare species and I am rather pleased with the quality of the photo considering the equipment that I was using at the time.

Araschnia levana f. levana belongs to the Nymphalidae family and has a wingspan of about 32 mm (spring generation) and 38 - 43 mm (summer generation). Danaus plexippus nigrippus / Andean Monarch butterfly)
The Andean subspecies nigrippus differs from the North American subspecies plexippus in several ways. In nigrippus the ground colour is a darker and duller brown; the upper half of the fw cell is black; the diagonal band of sub-apical spots are white instead of pale brown; and the black lines along the veins are heavier. The forewing shape in nigrippus also tends to be less elongated.
Danaus plexippus nigrippus is found on both sides of the Andes from Colombia to central Peru.

Danaus plexippus nigrippus
(Monarch butterfly / Mariposa Monarca)
The Monarch is the most famous migrant in the butterfly world.
The Monarch has established 5 non-migratory subspecies in the neotropical region - "portoricensis" in Puerto Rico; "leucogyne" on the Virgin Islands; "megalippe" in Cuba, the Bahamas and the Caymans; "tobagi" on Tobago, and "nigrippus" in the Andes.
