National Lottery machine 'Guinevere' 1994

One of three random-number-selecting machines used in the UK's National Lottery live draws held since November 1994. Each week, as host Noel Edmonds whipped the crowds at BBC Television Centre into a frenzy of anticipation, all eyes focused on its dropping balls.

One at a time, the numbers flashed up on millions of television screens across the country. Somebody was about to become a millionaire. Yet for all its modern glitz, the machine was performing an ancient and venerated task -- the selection of a randon number. We have had technology to do that for thousands of years.

10 pieces, my kind of puzzle! To my eyes, this image creates an illusion. I think the shadows make the number pictures seem to sit above the surface of the wood, but they are recessed places to put the puzzle pieces.

Simple gesso and watercolor crayon background, with number stamps, rub-on letters and scraps of paper for the shoe.

This guy was reading a chapter about "Magical numbers" in a mathematics book during the concert of The Magical Numbers

Library books. I love the crinkling sound the plastic covers make when you open them.
