Il cosiddetto Tempietto longobardo, oggi oratorio di Santa Maria in Valle, si trova a Cividale del Friuli (Udine). Si tratta della più importante e meglio conservata testimonianza architettonica dell'epoca longobarda ed è particolarmente importante perché segna la convivenza di motivi prettamente longobardi (nei Fregi, per esempio) e una ripresa dei modelli classici, creando una sorta di continuità aulica ininterrotta tra l'arte classica, l'arte longobarda e l'arte carolingia (nei cui cantieri lavorarono spesso maestranze longobarde, come a Brescia) e ottoniana.

It is believed that at the end of the Neolithic Period (around 4000 BC), Achill had a population of 500–1,000 people. The island would have been mostly forest until the Neolithic people began crop cultivation. Settlement increased during the Iron Age, and the dispersal of small forts around the coast indicate the warlike nature of the times. Granuaile maintained a castle at Kildownet in the 16th century. Achill has a long history of human settlement and there is evidence that Achill was inhabited as many as 5,000 years ago. Megalithic tombs (see picture, right) and promontory forts testifying to this can be seen at Slievemore, along the Atlantic Drive and on Achill Beg Island. Grace O'Malley's Castle Kildamhnait Castle is a 15th century tower house associated with the O' Malley Clan, who were once a ruling family of Achill. Grace O' Malley, or Granuaile, the most famous of the O' Malley's was born in Clare Island around 1530. Her father was the chieftain of the barony of Murrisk. The O'Malleys were a powerful seafaring family, who traded widely and refused to submit to English rule. Grace became a fearless leader and gained fame as a sea captain and pirate. She is reputed to have met with Queen Elizabeth 1 in 1593. She died around 1603 and is buried in the O'Malley family tomb on Clare Island.

 

Achill Mission (The Colony) One of Achill's most famous historical sites is that of the Achill Mission or 'the Colony' at Dugort. In 1831 the Protestant Reverend Edward Nangle founded a proselytising mission at Dugort. The Mission included schools, cottages, an orphanage, a small hospital and a hotel (nowThe Slievemore Hotel). The 'Colony' was very successful for a time and regularly produced a newspaper called the 'Achill Missionary Herald'. The Reverend Nangle expanded his mission into Mweelin, where a 'school' was built. The Achill Mission began to decline slowly after Nangle was moved from Achill and was finally closed in the 1880s. Edward Nangle died in 1883.

 

Railway Line to Achill In 1894, the Westport - Newport railway line was extended to Achill Sound. The train station is now a hostel. The train provided a great service to Achill, but it also fulfilled an ancient prophecy. Brian Rua O' Cearbhain had prophesied that 'carts on iron wheels' would carry bodies into Achill on their first and last journey. In 1894, the first train on the Achill railway carried the bodies of victims of the Clew Bay Drowning. This tragedy occurred when a boat overturned in Clew Bay, drowning thirty two young people. They had been going to meet the steamer which would take them to Scotland for potato picking.

Thank you to my father for bringing me this camera from New York last Monday.

 

Only yesterday, Sunday afternoon, did I have time to go shooting with my friend Fabiana (she used my Powershot Pro 1) and test out this beast.

 

It´s a tool I need to use wisely and am extremely grateful to have been able to upgrade from a 2.1 megapixel HP amateur digital camera to a 4.0 Canon Powershot Elph SD400, then to a 8.0 megapixel Powershot Pro 1, and now my first DSLR in the past year and a half.

 

Today I realized I know absolutely nothing about photography despite taking photos digitally since 1997.

 

This is another level and another step. I didn´t feel at home like I do with my Powershot Pro 1 and am conscious that I need to learn more about technique (exposure, lighting, compensation, etc etc).

 

Some people call me a Professional now but I still feel like an Amateur.

 

I´ve done some weddings here in Brazil. I´ve sold some photos through Flickr and even had the Wrigley´s gum company use a photo of sugarcane in their Double Mint Twins advertisement.

 

I´ve had over 350,000 visits on my Flickr site and posted over 13,000 photos.

 

I´ve been inspired by great photography here and also inspired others.

 

There is so much more to learn and so much more to shoot.

 

I got a 300mm USM telephoto lens but am itchin´ to get others. I feel like now is the time to do another workshop in São Paulo or with an established photographer.

 

I felt very happy after my first "Fotosafari" with Fabiana today and be able to teach her some basics and learn how to use my camera a bit.

 

We are all students and teachers.

 

I´d also like to thank John Spink, a photojournalist from the Atlanta Jornal Constitution who ignited the spark to take my photography seriously.

 

"You´ve got the eye, kid. Now go get a 20D and you´ll be dangerous."

Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Odisha. In terms of per capita income, in 2011, Gujarat ranked 6th among major states, and .

And, Gujarat's social indicators too tell the same sorry story that has marked the neoliberal model in the rest of India. .
