Paris, Gare de l'Est, lors de manifestation du 28 Octobre 2010...

Les quais se retrouvent enfumée par l'allumage de plusieurs torches déposées par les manifestants...

An old shot (October 2011) from near the summit of Skiddaw, processed with Nik Analog Efex and then Nik Silver Efex.

sunflowers are called sunflowers not because they look like the sun, but because they turn with sun as it moves across the sky, hence their name in French: tournesol.

Just several months ago, these young pretty boys were colorless, skittish and not much different in appearance from their sisters.

The transformation into beautiful young males is complete and in the spring they will compete for the attention of eligible females in the countryside and the cycle of pheasant life will continue for another generation.

Ringed-neck pheasants after hatching in spring take between 2-3 months to become independent and can have up to a dozen or more siblings. If they make it through their first harsh Minnesota winter, they begin their mating season in mid-March.

Unlike some other birds, they are not monogamous and normally have a small harem they defend against intrusion from other males.

Once the female begins preparation for nesting, the male is nowhere to be found. He doesn’t help with nest building nor does he get involved in raising the chicks. Sometimes if you are lucky when driving in the countryside you can catch glimpses of tired, frustrated females reading self-help books in order to cope.

Though our pheasants are hardy birds, their lifespan is heavily influenced by the availability of food and adequate habitat during our inclement winters and cold springs.

A severe winter can see up to 50% of the pheasant population perish.

I love middles of nowhere.

Having lived in a city for a bit over half my life now, it is easy to forget how smothering the blanket of human density we wrap ourselves in. So rarely am I ever really alone, either physically and literally by myself, or figuratively alone with my own thoughts unpeppered by one urban/technological distraction or another. It is not just liberating, but soothing, centering, and liberating then to find yourself somewhere away from just about everything except the sun and the wind. To drive down a dirt road where you can just stop wherever you want for however long you want, not bothering to pull to the side because nobody else is going to be coming along for hours, if not days. To be out of cell service, so that the phone stays in your pocket except for the occasional light meter reading. To have the only voice you hear be your own internal thoughts, which themselves sense the silence around you and lower their own volume respectively. To be a small person standing in a very vast area and be reminded of just how big the world is, and that there are still empty corners of it.

I value places like this and try to get to them as often as I can. They're good for me.

Playing with the Planet Visuality...

One final shot of this beautiful old fixer upper. That front fender itself is a work of art; I have shot hundreds of photos of it.

The fisheye lens provides a lot of distortion, of course, but take my word for it that the old beast is leaning perilously to the right. I used to get the tripod and macro lens in close on that side, but these days it feels unsafe. I know the steel is thick, the car is heavy, and it will probably continue to lean, but I don't want to be under it if it releases and suddenly topples.

Back to critters, landscapes, and macro beginning tomorrow!

Photographed in a place where nothing happens - where most folks can't imagine living, but trust me, life far from traffic jams and shopping malls has its charms - ie. rural Saskatchewan (Canada). Just off the Coquihalla Highway in BC,

I tried sinking the canoe once before and that REALLY tough on the camera equipment and the nerves, and so there’s nowhere to hide when you are paddling around in the middle of the water. The deer don’t always keep an eye on the water, but in this case, she spotted me long before I got close enough to her. Photo taken on Armand Bayou just south of Bay Area Park.

No need to be concerned about the water hyacinth as this is an old photo and I don’t thing it’s a problem, but I have no idea what is happening on the bayou as it has been a couple of months since I’ve been on the water. May squeeze in a trip soon if the weather is cooperative. Also want to add that the camera equipment is insured. Wishing everyone a wonderful Labor Day weekend.

Are you ready?

I'm in the driver's seat now

Oh, oh

Hear me out, I'm sorry, but I'm a little less than sold

I've been around, heard all the stories you said you never told

You're used to speaking in tongues to feel like you're in control

Now you've got nowhere to run, now you've got nowhere to go

What You See is What You Get...

Taken in the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota, USA.

The place: the middle of no where, somewhere near civilization.

I’m nowhere near perfect

I eat when I’m bored

I fall for boys too easily

and I’m vulnerable to their lies

I’m hoping that one day

someone will truly get to know me

and understand me as I am.

I live by quotes that explain exactly what I’m going through and

I make excuses for many things in my life.

I’m not perfect and I’m glad

Because though each of us is something, none of us are everything.

The above was a quote I found that I changed around to fit me personally. So though I got the idea from elsewhere...the words are about me. ;o)
