I didn't spend much time in the Yukon, primarily driving thru on my way to Alaska. Was impressed with the undisturbed immensity of pure nature, no signs of humanity. Liked that. Must say though that I didn't like large portions of the AlCan highway thru the Yukon. The roads were horrendous, worst I've experienced. But then they have to deal with permafrost and frost heaves that destroy sections of the road each winter. Can't expect them to be great when dealing with that continual issue.

Was also impressed with the Capital, Whitehorse. Very clean, modern and well laid out.

Hope to make that drive again some year.

he "Now Hotel Jefferson" in Springfield, MO, is not a hotel in the traditional sense. It is an apartment building that was formerly the Jefferson Hotel. The building is located at 307 S. Jefferson and was built over 100 years ago, according to an Airbnb listing. The building is now a serviced apartment building, offering rooms and suites with amenities like a kitchen, living room, and WiFi, says Airbnb.

I only had half an hour last night as I rushed down the beach with the sun almost gone. I could see photographers to the right, so I made a quick decision to head left for some reflections near Witches Point. I had great fun as the clouds rushed to join me. The others were still there when I left , taking long exposures in the afterglow. I just love the changing cloud patterns, and trying to do them justice. Too late now, was almost right, by Holly Golightly.

for this year, at least. Probably the most successful and inexpensive garden purchase I've ever made. It was £4.99 (OK, £5.00) from my local Asda. It was all dry and weak, but it's grown from strength to strength over the years.

No! Not taken this Autumn, but a previously unposted shot from January this year. I don't normally go back in the archives too much but in tribute to the forthcoming Short Eared Owl season (and the fact it has rained or been miserable weather for at least 2 weeks) I have included a shot of my closest encounter to date with a perched bird.

I had spent a few hours at the site when one of the group decided they needed to go home. As this owl was perched on a post which they would have to walk past I decided to go along too and see how far we got before it flew off. Foolishly didn't take my tripod so had to struggle hand holding the 600mm - but I think the fact he/she didn't fly until we were quite close gave me extra strength.

Although we do have a year round population, with some breeding in the North, numbers are swelled in the winter with migrants from Scandanavia, Russia and Iceland. I think this is one of them.
