I was wondering whether or not to continue with my journey in Glen Cannich when I noticed the incoming snow shower, but I carried on and enjoyed a good walk in sunshine with Archie the dog.

Noticed today, that the Pest Aphids are back.

Who ever knew a moment like this would ever come again.

Music for this moment

I was just coastin', never really goin' anywhere

Caught up in a web

I was gettin' kind of used to stayin' there

And out of the blue

I fell for you

Now you're liftin' me up, 'stead of holdin' me down

Stealin' my heart, 'stead of stealin' my crown

Untangled all the strings 'round my wings that were tied

I didn't know him and I didn't know me

Cloud nine was always out of reach

Now I remember what it feels like to fly

You give me butterflies

Kiss full of color, makes me wonder where you've always been

I was hiding in doubt 'til you brought me out of my chrysalis

And I came out new

All because of you

Now you're liftin' me up, 'stead of holdin' me down

Stealin' my heart, 'stead of stealin' my crown

Untangled all the strings round my wings that were tied

I didn't know him and I didn't know me

Cloud nine was always out of reach

Now I remember what it feels like to fly

You give me butterflies

Yeah, you give me butterflies

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

Mm, mm

Now you're liftin' me up, 'stead of holdin' me down

You're takin' my hand, 'stead of takin' my crown

Untangled all the strings round my wings that were tied

I didn't know him and I didn't know me

Cloud nine was always out of reach

Now I remember what it feels like to fly

You give me butterflies

Mm, mm, mm

You give me butterflies

Mm, mm, mm, mm

When I first spotted this Sparrow I did not notice that it was not a Song Sparrow as I had thought at first glance. When I pulled it up on my computer I notice the differences and at the same time it was not quite the White-throated Sparrow I expected. It might be a hybrid or a morph of some type, but basically it is a White-throated Sparrow.

Just noticed that I haven't presented my weekly 52frames submissions here for a long time. Well, I have some catching up to do!

First of all... of course, I successfully saved the bee right after the shot. She shook herself dry twice and then flew away. The swimming accident happened in our children's pool. I was just out in the garden looking for a suitable picture for this week. And then I saw her. I just needed one click for this moment, since it was a matter of life and death. It was a win-win situation for the bee and me. She was rescued and I had my picture for this week safe. Don't swim out so far and always keep your head up!

The cairns mark the trail along the five mile pass we crossed. Snowstorms can pop up without notice and even just an inch or two and you can completely lose the trail. The cairns help to guide you.

Terrific Tuesday to you.

CP grain empties 318-144 continues its gradual climb up the Elk River Valley through the incredibly scenic mountain town of Fernie, BC.

Fernie is one of those rare places where no matter which way you face, the mountain scenery will take your breath away. Apparently many other have noticed this also, as there are several large housing development projects starting and ongoing in town. This oft photographed angle was at the periphery of a construction project when I shot this in late May of 2025. Hopefully the view remains, unobstructed today and in the future.

Noticed this schoolhouse from highway 2 driving to Dry Falls. I adore abandoned and old structures. Can see the pride of work in its build.

Built in 1905 and closed in the 1940s. Govan is a ghost town now, population 3. I understand the steeple collapsed in 2019.

Yesterday morning I noticed this smallish web in the garden. I set up the camera above the web, and placed the flash below. The resulting colors were a surprise - it looked like diffraction of some kind was going on. On the web (haha) I found that "The thin linear threads of spider webs occasionally act as optical slits, decomposing white light by diffraction. The resulting colors aren't as pure as those of refraction phenomena, as in a rainbow or in an ice halo....The diameter of the minute water droplets composing mid-level clouds is similar to the diameter of spider web threads -- a few microns or even less." epod.usra.edu/blog/2005/01/spider-web-diffraction.html

I noticed that a few remote villages kept a few turkeys. Hopefully this chap was kept to breed with rather than for the pot.

The alarm today went off at 5am, over two hours before sunrise. The reason for the early alarm was the drive to Canyonlands National Park and the ensuing walk to Mesa Arch would take nearly an hour and I wanted to be able to plant my tripod before everyone else arrived. Driving out of Moab the streets were void of traffic and after turning onto the road leading to Canyonlands there weren’t any headlights in the rearview mirror or were there taillights visible ahead. I was confident that I had departed at an appropriately early enough time.

After entering the National Park I noticed a few taillights ahead of me in the distance. “OK, I guess there may be a few early risers there,” I thought. How wrong I was, for as I crested the rise in the dark with my headlamp guiding my way along the path to Mesa Arch I could hear many voices coming from ahead. I wasn’t alone and it wasn’t just a couple of early risers either. There were already 15 to 20 tripods with accompanying cameras and photographers set up waiting for sunrise! Fortunately, the location I had scouted out the day prior was still available, so I joined the masses and added my tripod and camera to the mix. Note to self: rethink the starting time for my next visit!

The beauty of the sunrise here is something one truly needs to witness in person. As the sun broke the horizon the first sunburst occurred, but the best was yet to come. Initially there is the lack of reflected light on the underside of Mesa Arch. But as the sun continued to rise and began to cross the underside of the arch a 2nd sunburst occurred while the reflected light illuminated the underbelly of the arch turning the sandstone a glowing red. While some photographers had already started packing up, the patience of ‘waiting for the light’ was rewarded with this image.

Highlighted by the rising sun is the Washer Woman (derived from its resemblance of a tall and slender woman reaching her hands into a tub) and to its right is the taller Monster Tower. Washer Woman and Monster Tower are each over 600 feet tall. Behind the Washer Woman is the Sandcastle.

This is the second image I’ve posted from that wonderful morning, but this one was taken moments earlier than the previous one. The sunburst is larger in this image as the sun has yet to rise high enough to be partially hidden by the arch.

From the earlier image, Kathleen had commented . . . “I can see an Indian lying in repose, hand in his lap and his legs crossed........lying in the opening, do you see him?” Yes, I could! Can you?

shoot what i find.

The other day when out riding I noticed the swallows swooping low over the Waimakariri River. Today I took my camera along to take some shots. I am quite pleased with the performance of the Sony A1 provided of course that I can keep these little "fighter jets" in the view finder long enough to press that shutter

I went out, and took a bunch of shots from my new Sony 200-600mm lens. I was happy that I finally got around to using it. I noticed 200mm was a little tight, so i put on meh Tamron 70-180mm and got this beauty.

I'm not a big fan of shooting Philly. I think it's because I'm trying to find a new angle, and not shoot the same cookie cutter shots everyone can shoot. This city definitely has some hidden gems, you just need to have the eye, and look for them.

Sometimes, all that is needed to be noticed, is to reach a little higher, be a little hungrier, work a little harder than the crowd.

You've probably noticed it already... but for those who haven't... there's this viral thing going around Facebook at the moment where photographers challenge each other to post five black & white photos in 5 days... and to nominate one other person for every photo that they post.

So last week my buddy Mike Scott invited me to participate in the 5 in 5 B&W challenge. At first I thought it was a really lame idea... I only ever see the world in colour... so why should I post black & white photos!? I have been known to post the occaaaasional monochrome photo... but only when the colours are so flat that they don't add anything extra to the image.

But after thinking it all over for a few days... I decided that this challenge was probably a good thing... it would force me to try something different... force me to step out of my colour comfort zone and see the world in a more artistic way. So I dug deep into my archives and reprocessed a five image panorama that I shot at Namibia's iconic "Dead Vlei" way back in September 2009. After I'd processed with my standard workflow... I converted it to black & white with the Nik Silver Efex filter plugin. But no matter how much I tweaked the photo in Silver Efex... I still preferred the original colour version... damn!

But then I adjusted the opacity of the mono layer in Photoshop... thereby reintroducing a little bit of colour to my mono conversion. I stopped at 80% opacity... hey this works for me... sure it's not a true black & white photo... but it certainly ain't a colour photo!

Sorry Mike... I tried but failed.

I now challenge Jan Zwilling to post 5 black & white photos within the next 5 days.

Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

Framed by giant trees that were only saplings when a young, hopeful farmer built a dairy barn, the barn and silo now hold only bushels of silence, their once vibrant life now bathed in subdued tones. As a young teenager, it was a comforting sound to come home from school and walk down our long lane and hear the familiar noises of livestock around the barn.
