Date of Interview: December 2, 1929 (2012)

Interviewer: Zoe Foodiboo

Interviewee(s): Charika Bauer Blue

**NOTE: Known as Charika Boberg as of January 1, 1929 [13]

Location: Home of Charika Blue, Friedrichstrasse 7b, 1920s Berlin Project (owned and managed by Frau Jo Yardley), Second Life.

Abstract: Frau Charika Blue (née Bauer) first arrived in 1920 Berlin in June 1928 [2011]. She works at Herr Doktor Crispin Sturges secretary and as a nurse at the hospital. In this interview, Frau Blue describe her childhood and the event that led to her arrival in Berlin. She reminisces about Picture Day and the Legs Competition at the Eldorado. Her daughter, Verona, shares surprising news about their family. Other tenants mentioned in this interview include: Rosemary Chesnokova (née Thyme), Zeno McAuley, Crispin Sturges, Augusta von Nassau, and BJ Blue.

**********

Charika Bauer Blue sips her tea

CB: OK, well, .... I was born in India 26 years ago. My father was Heinrich Bauer, and he came from Kitzbuhel.

Zoe Foodiboo gets out her notepad and starts to scribble

CB: He was very interested, almost passioned about exotic herbs and spices. He started to work early for an export company that brought him on many journeys. One of them was to Nagercoil in India 1900.

Zoe nods

CB: He met my mother Uma, who was the daughter of the spice company that my father wanted to make a deal with. They got married in 1901, and I was born two years later.

Zoe smiles

CB: The family life was apparently very happy from what I have been told. But the business went bad. The Austrian interest in Indian spices was minimal...there was no market. We all moved to Munich in 1908. The reason why he chose Munich was the fact that his sister Ottilia Mayer lived there. My father opened up a grocery store in Munich, but he passed away in 1911.

ZF: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that...

CB: My mother could not handle the German culture nor the language. The store went bankrupt, and she decided to move back to India. I lived with my aunt Ottilia...I did not like it very much. it was an old fashioned household and I never felt that I belonged.

Zoe nods

CB: She died nine years ago but by then I had left my home there and started working as a dancer. I was 17 years old...quite young and inexperienced...

Zoe nods

CB: ...but I did not know what else to do. It was about that time when I met a pianist in Munich.

He came from Italy and was much older than me.

Zoe nods and pours herself some tea

CB: I made a big mistake and I believed him...and soon I was pregnant.

ZF: Ah...

CB: I wanted to marry him but he showed his real self when I told him about it. He was already married and threatened me if I told anybody including his wife.

ZF: Oh dear.

CB: I kept on working as a dancer.

ZF: with a new baby? My goodness, that must've been hard.

CB: Yes, but we were a good bunch of friends - they helped me. When I got too pregnant to dance I worked as the dance troupe leader's secretary and also I did some choreography.

Zoe smiles

CB: Monsieur Framboise, the dance troupe leader, helped me. So we toured for several years, and Verona grew up among dancers and musicians.

Zoe smiles at Verona

Verona Bauer Blue: I want to be a dancer!

Zoe grins

CB: Not the normal childhood. When she was six years old I thought that I could not continue like that. She needs to go to school.

ZF: She's a delightful child....

Verona hums a tune

CB: So anyway, I left Munich and came to Berlin in the early summer of 1928 ((2011)). That is the background - the short version.

ZF: Did you know anyone in Berlin before you moved here?

CB: No, I didn't. But I got to know some Berliners at once...

ZF: You found a job....

CB: I moved into the Nussbaum hotel. I had saved some money from the dance years so it took some time before I got a job. I kept Verona there in secret.

Zoe nods, “secret?”

CB: I was afraid that somebody would take her from me. Some people told me that the dance life i had lead was not suitable for a child - which was right.

VB: I sneaked out

Charika frowns

VB: I ran around and met people.

Zoe arches an eyebrow at verona

ZF: you did? who did you meet?

VB: I met Herr Zeno. [Zeno McAuley] He told me to go and annoy the priest.

ZF: well that was lucky....

VB: But there was a lady there already who was annoying him - a blonde lady.

ZF: a blonde lady?

VB: Yes!

Zoe thinks of all the blondes she knows in Berlin....

CB: Then my new friend Rose [Rosemary Chesnokova née Thyme] told me about an apartment at Mieze Gasse and I managed to get that. I had by that time bought a taxi car and tried to work as a taxi driver.

ZF: oh my! tough job.

CB: Yes, it did not work.

ZF: dangerous job, too...

CB: Yes, that too. Car was too expensive and so was the petrol.

Zoe tucks a lock of hair behind her ear

CB: I met some dodgy people...people I didn't want to connect with.

Zoe nods

CB: People who tried to fool me again.

CB: But for me the important thing was to start a new more steady life with my daughter, giving her the future she deserves.

Zoe smiles

CB: I think that is how all mothers think. Or should think.

Zoe smiles in agreement

CB: I met Dr Sturges [Crispin Sturges] last winter, and he offered me to become his secretary. I did that and I took medical courses...

ZF: for his private practice on UDL?

CB: ...and become a qualified nurse. Yes.

ZF: What is it like working for Dr. Sturges?

CB: After he started showing more interest in show business I had to do most of the work there. He is a kind gentleman. I can understand his popularity.

Zoe smiles, “He's a charming fella, to be sure...”

CB: He showed me all the things I needed to know to work for him, and so I did just that, started working for him. And I also work at the hospital.

ZF: Oh wonderful! and you enjoy the work you do at his office?

CB: Yes, although I wish the doctor spent more time and energy on his work and not on golf and stage shows.

Zoe stifles a giggle

CB: There are so many performers in Berlin as it is. Still, he can afford to make those choices.

ZF: Well, he's a gifted director.

CB: I'm sure he is.

Zoe smiles

CB: He is a gifted doctor as well.

ZF: Tell me about what you do at the hospital?

CB: I examine, write out prescriptions, I put on plaster where that is needed. It's not that difficult.

ZF: You do some midwifery as well?

CB: Yes, I was also the midwife when Rosemary was about to deliver.

ZF: What was that like?

CB: We had decided that long in advance, since she is one of my closest friends in Berlin. It was fun actually. I had prepared by reading all the available literature and talked to older midwives about it so even if I hadn't done it before I felt well prepared.

Zoe nods

CB: It is of course also very nice when somebody shows you that trust. It all went well. And the boy is now ... how old? four months?

ZF: Gregory? I'm not sure....that sounds right. He's beautiful.

VB: .... about babies .....

CB: Yes he is

ZF: Yes, Verona?

VB: Nothing!

ZF: okie dokie....

CB: Before all that I had to leave Berlin for a couple of months

ZF: Oh?

CB: going to India to help my sick mother

ZF: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that....

CB: I was in India from April to June.

ZF: I remember you were gone....we missed you....

CB: I was needed there. I had some idea of bringing her back with me...

Zoe nods

CB: ...but she refused

CB: Before I went I had started to spend some time with my future husband BJ.

ZF: How did you two meet?

CB: It was actually at Club Eldorado.

ZF: how fun!

CB: Yes I thought so. You remember that contest, nicest legs in Berlin?

ZF: Oh yes, that was a fun evening!

CB: Yes it was hilarious.

ZF: You met that night?

CB: I THINK (not sure) it was BJ's first visit there.

Zoe nods

VB: I want to go to Eldorado

Zoe shakes her head at Verona

CB: He was one of few men in the audience, the rest was up on stage. I think he was a bit shocked about the whole spectacle. He is not like all other men in Berlin. He does not think that he is God's gift to women.

Zoe cracks up

CB: Just because there is a shortage of men in Berlin, it doesn't mean that we all want to sleep with them. Anyway, I fell for him. But I thought he was more interested in Frl Augusta [Augusta von Nassau] at the time.

Zoe leans in, listening intently

CB: But I don't know. When I got back to Berlin last summer, we started "dating"

ZF: Love stories are my favorite part :)

CB: But we kept it a bit of a secret.

ZF: Oh? Why?

CB: Oh I don't know why really.

Zoe understands but decides not to go into it.

CB: Maybe I didn't want to be a part of the usual gossip in Berlin

ZF: Exactly what I was thinking :)

CB: ((actually I don't mind, but my character does)) I started to accompany him on some of his journeys and on a train ride he proposed to me.

ZF: awwww

Zoe claps a little

CB: We managed to get married at a small chapel in Hannover a week later. So that is how I ended up in this apartment with my daughter.

ZF: a happy ending!

VB: and me!

ZF: and you!

CB: I meant you, Vero. I love Berlin. So many friendly people. I have felt welcome since I first got here. First event where I started to meet other Berliners was during a photo shoot event. That was in June last year...or maybe July.

ZF: photo shoot?

CB: Yes

ZF: Ah, picture day!

CB: the Picture day

ZF: Tel lme about that....I wasn't here for that.

CB: There were many different times with different more or less staged scenes to be photographed.

Zoe nods and scribbles

CB: I was not there all the time, but I was in a photo session outside the cafe...another outside the cinema and also inside the cinema..another one at the old bathhouse.

ZF: What was the purpose of Picture day?

CB: ...and I seem to recall taking part of another photo session at der Keller. I think the purpose was to take loads of pictures showing the different places in the Berlin sim - pictures with lots of life and lots of people. There was a traffic jam too.

ZF: neat!

CB: I think all Berliners who owned Dixi cars put them in the street at Unter den Linden. (( I may mix it up a bit, but I remember frau Yardley shouting about rezzing anything more due to lack of prims ))

VB: ((yes))

ZF: (( I was just wondering about that ))

CB: I have looked through many of the pictures from that day.

ZF: What other events did you participate in?

CB: I have not taken part of that many events really. The first rooftop dance last year.

ZF: Ah....on the Bauhaus rooftop?

CB: it's more the usual daily life in Berlin...Yes, not the one this year, I could not attend that, but the one last year.

Zoe nods

CB: I remember Sonatta Morales sitting by the edge of the roof and falling off

ZF: oh my! I hope she didn't break anything...

CB: maybe her ego

ZF: Verona, what do you like to do in Berlin?

VB: I like to play. I like to balance.

ZF: balance?

VB: Yes.

Verona gets silent

CB: Where do you balance?

VB: I like to dance

ZF: Yes, on what?

VB: I like to skip.

VB: nothing

VB: nowhere

ZF: Dance? at school?

VB: whenever I hear music

Charika whispers: One thing I worry about is the fact that Verona grew up not being around other children.

CB: She seems to get along with the kids at school very well. She may not always interact well with other children. That is why I think it is so important for her to go to school and meet new friends.

Zoe nods

ZF: Augusta is a wonderful teacher

CB: But she tends to contact grown ups more easily.

VB: I love Miss Augusta!

Zoe grins at Verona

CB: Yes she is good

ZF: Do you learn a lot in Miss Augusta's class?

CB: She could be more strict but she is good.

VB: Yes I learn lots of things.

ZF: like what?

VB: Tell frl Foobidoo about the baby!

ZF: Baby?

CB: Not now Verona.

Zoe looks at Charika with a sly smile

VB: I'm going to have a brother! or a sister! or both!

ZF: You are? My goodness! Congratulations, Charika!

Zoe giggles

CB: Thank you. It was not meant to be announced yet but maybe it's time.

ZF: Verona's excited....

CB: Yes, me too.

ZF: Sure, why not? You and Rose at about the same time - how fun!

CB: This time it's more planned

Zoe grins

ZF: Verona, where'd you get that hat?

VB: I borrowed it.

ZF: from whom?

VB: I don't know. From the man who left it where I found it.

ZF: where did you find it?

VB: That is a secret.

Charika eyes Verona

CB: I'll deal with that later

ZF: Well, alright then. Just one more question, OCC. How did you discover the 1920s Berlin Project?

CB: (( ok going OOC for a moment then in brackets ))

ZF: (( brackets! I always forget ))

CB: (( I know the typist behind Rosemary and known her in RL for many years ))

Zoe nods

CB): (( She first told me about SL, and showed me how to use it. We started going to places as SL sisters, but that did not fit the RP in Berlin. When she found Berlin she told me about it, and I came here as Charika Bauer ))

Zoe nods

CB: (( when I had problems finding out what to do here in Berlin, my daughter Verona was "invented" and R is playing her ))

Zoe smiles

VB: (( And that is fun! But there were almost no other children in Berlin when I first got here ))

ZF: And tell me what you love about the Berlin Project?

CB: ((First of all the community. The sim is very well made, but I have seen lots of beautiful sims ))

Zoe nods in agreement

CB: (( It is the fact that there are lots of interesting and friendly people here. I have learnt about the Weimar Republic since I got here, had almost not heard of that before.))

Zoe nods

CB: ((and people come and people go, but many come back. When i left it was because of RL issues, but it felt like coming to a second home when I returned. ))

ZF: awwww

CB: ((I think I keep a low profile here, but I also think that it makes me more "realistic" as a rp character.))

Zoe nods

CB: ((and i like the mix between normal people and over-the-top people...makes it interesting))

ZF: heh....it takes all kinds!

CB: it does

ZF: Verona? You have anything to add?

VB: No. I have dropped the bomb, I'm satisfied.

Verona laughs

Zoe looks at Verona's hat

ZF: Well, shall we all head over to the Adlon for supper?

CB: Great idea

VB: I will stay at home.

CB: Bye dear.

ZF: Bye Verona!

I also used this notepad for CD-purchasing reminders from ~1991-2005.

Portishead at the top of the page puts this around 1994.

It's a magnetic notepad from the dollar bins at Michael's Crafts. I'm going to cut it down to fit my planner so I can have some seasonal paper.

They didn't have any Halloween pads, so this is the best I can do.

Posed photo used for graphics creation. Book is Harry Potter.

I found theis recently (2011) and it was such a treasure because it is from a notepad I used to have at my office when I was still doing accounting work. After school I would pick KJ up and occasionally bring him back to my office. To keep him entertained, I'd give him this notepad to draw on. He had to have drawn this when he was around 5-7 years old. The age where he was into Bionicle toys!

One of the many prototype Newton devices Walter Smith brought to the Worldwide Newton Conference. This is a pre-production version of the original MessagePad (OMP) and includes a hastily carved-out flash card hatch on the top of the device. This hatch allows access to a flash ROM slot, used for dumping an updated operating system into a demonstration device. Note the the name of this device is a Notepad, not a MessagePad, as it was named when it finally shipped.

Echofon Pro (£2.99)

There are lots of Twitter apps out there for the iPhone and iPad, including an official app, but Echofon is my favourite for three reasons: 1) it syncs with my iPhone and desktop Twitter apps, so I can always pick up where I left off; 2) It send notifications to my devices when I get an @reply or Direct Message, except - cleverly - when I'm using Echofon on my desktop; and 3) it sports a slick, clutter-free interface.

Guardian Eyewitness (Free)

The Guardian Eyewitness app makes the most of the iPad's gorgeous display, showcasing provocative photographs that reflect the day's events. Tap to see a 'Pro Tip' from the Guardian photography team for budding photo journalists.

Reeder (£2.99)

An RSS reader that syncs with Google Reader (and therefore my iPhone and desktop RSS apps) and really cares about its design. It looks gorgeous and takes the clutter out of reading the news in the morning. It's how I start my day and keep on top of all that business, lifestyle and technology news!

Comics (Free)

If you're a comic book fan, like I am, the Comics app is the real superhero of the App Store. Comics, which include issues from Marvel and DC, look incredible on the iPad's display and the Guided View Technology intelligently takes you through books panel by panel. And for iPhone or iPad app developers, Comics is a great example of generating income from in-app purchasing. The app itself is free but comics cost a couple of quid each.

Instapaper (£2.99)

Let's say you're at your desktop or laptop computer and you've spotted a post on Enterprise Nation that you don't quite have the time to read properly now. Click the 'Read Later' bookmarklet in your browser and Instapaper saves just the text and accompanying images (no ads!) and syncs it to your Instapaper account, ready to read later on your iPad or iPhone or via the Instapaper website. Magic!

iBooks (Free) and Kindle (Free)

iBooks from Apple is an arguably better reading experience, but the Kindle app from Amazon offers more selection at a better price. Both sync pages across devices, so you can pick up the same book on your iPhone and it'll remember where you left off.

Pages, Numbers and Keynote (£5.99 each)

Word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software from Apple is surprisingly fully featured and affordable at £5.99 each. They won't replace your desktop alternatives (probably from Microsoft), but for light work or document editing these apps are very impressive. You might want to use an Apple Keyboard Dock or sync and Apple Keyboard for heavier work.

Photogene (£2.39)

Until Adobe release Photoshop for the iPad, Photogene is the next best thing: crop, straighten, red-eye correction and much more with just a swipe here and there.

SketchBook Pro (£4.99)

The example sketches that come with SketchBook Pro will blow your mind! Really powerful stuff. My masterpieces are usually flowcharts or website plans!

Evernote (Free)

I can't say enough about Evernote. It turns your iPhone or iPad into an extension of your brain, helping you remember everything - notes, images, web pages - and syncs it across all of your devices.

Taska (£2.99)

A decent to-do app is conspicuously missing from the iPad's default set-up, but Taska steps in and does a grand job, syncing with Toodledo, so you can keep up-to-date with your tasks on the web and on your desktop.
