Frost and ice in Florida? Yes! We have many winter days with temps (F) in the 20s. Hard freezes and frost are not uncommon. One year it was so cold that the giant wild pythons in the Everglades were freezing to death, and it even got to freezing temps in the Keys. Not anywhere near as severe as the NY winters I used to experience, but 25 degrees anywhere is cold!

These are micro shots of ice crystals from the frost on various bits of vegetation in my yard. I have to shoot them early in the morning because even the heat from my breath will start them to melting, and even if the temp is 30F, when the sun hits the yard the frost vanishes in minutes so I have to move fast.

And it was published in a Dec 31, 2009 blog titled "Once in a Blue Moon: Be Sure to Look Up This New Year’s Eve."

Moving into 2010, the photo was published in a Jan 29, 2010 blog titled "Friday Recap: Wolf Moon Edition," which discussed the "wolf moon" phenomenon that occurred on Jan 29th. Unfortunately, it had nothing to do with this photo -- which was taken roughly six months earlier. Indeed, I had considered photographing the "real" wolf moon, but by the time I became aware of it, it was already high in the sky and no longer interesting from a photographic perspective. Interestingly, it was also situated quite a lot further north than this particular photo -- in which the moon had risen right above 96th Street, and illuminated part of the entrance into Central Park...

Anyway, it was also published in a Jul 4, 2010 blog titled "Events for or Less Sunday." It was also published in an Oct 6, 2010 blog titled "Folklore Confirmed: The Moon's Phase Affects Rainfall (via @sciencenow)," and an Oct 29, 2010 blog titled "The Secret Behind Day Trading Software And a Reason to Use It." It was also published in a Nov 6, 2010 blog titled "Day Trading Software Along With the Perks of Technology," and a Nov 8, 2010 blog titled "How to Select the Best Day Trading Software." It was also published in a Dec 8, 2010 blog titled "E mini S&P Index Trading Perfect Tool for Full-TIme Day-traders."

Moving into 2011, the photo was published in an Apr 24, 2011 blog titled "Will you see a fuller moon tonight … or tomorrow?" And it was published in a Jul 14, 2011 blog titled "Understanding full moon," which was republished in a Jan 8, 2012 blog with the same title . It was also published in an Aug 29, 2011 blog titled "Day Software Stock Trading – Is Trading Software Right Choice For You?

Moving into 2012, the photo was published in a Jan 11, 2012 Slate France blog titled "La Lune est-elle à la portée des entrepreneurs?" It was also published in a Sep 7, 2012 blog titled "Has the Moon created the world’s most enduring optical illusion?"

Moving into 2013, the photo was published in a Feb 25, 2013 blog titled "Understanding Full Moon."

Moving into 2014, the photo was published in a Mar 7, 2014 blog titled "Nightshift."

These photos were taken a couple days after my first HDR efforts on the 4th of July weekend, in an attempt to get a decent image of the full moon rising over the east side of Manhattan, from the terrace of my apartment over on the Upper West SIde. Not particularly memorable or spectacular results, but it gave me a chance to experiment with some of the parameters and settings in the Photomatix program I'm using to merge/combine the HDR shots.

Full disclosure: in addition to the HDR shots, I also took some "traditional" shots of the full moon a little later, after it had risen higher in the sky; these were taken with a manual setting of f/11 and 1/250th second (as recommended by Scott Kelby, in his Digital Photography books). I then used Adobe Photoshop Elements to extract just the moon out of that photo, and pasted it into this HDR composition in a separate "layer", which I was then able to enlarge to a ridiculous extent.

The original HDR image had a much more interesting orange-colored moon ... but when I tried to blow it up to a larger size, using Photoshop, the edges were so rough and grainy that it was embarrassing. So I think I'll stick with this composite, for better or worse...

********************

I tried an HDR (high dynamic range) photo once a year ago, but for some reason never pursued it. But it seems that more of and more of the "interesting" photos that I see on Flickr are HDR shots, so I decided to give it another try. The initial set of photos were taken from the rooftop of my apartment building at sunset, on the Sunday evening of 4th of July weekend.

I still have a *lot* to learn about this stuff, but even as a first attempt I'm staggered by what the tonal-mapping software programs (Photomatix, in my case) are capable of doing...

These grow to be much larger later in the season but in the beginning of the summer they're all quite small. June 2015 was unusually cold so everything seemed to be delayed with a couple of weeks compared to the typical schedule. This was shot on June 9th, but it looks more like a May-sized individual.

Stacked from 37 natural light exposures in Zerene Stacker.

BTW: It's tempting to soften the light with a diffuser in cases like this. Especially since direct sunlight + dew often causes tricky stacking artifacts. But note to self: It's worth taking the risk sometimes. Your light-deprived brain will thank you if you're like me and save editing until this dark time of year...

The hair! The faces on the people around them........the doorman who you can't see in this photo that asked them to "calm the dancing down". Hahahahahahahahahaha!

I have seriously started a Lauren Fanclub. She's the person who gets the most comments & favourites out of all my photos. I think I can safely say you can 'hire' her for a party for the small price of getting her really, really drunk.....

She is also a free spirit now that she graduated today.....That is correct people....she is also very intelligent as well as being a pretty face.......(pretty sure she has an English degree now or something)

She is going travelling throughout Europe this summer so if you want her to come to your party let me know!

My last presentation of a few pages from my note book was well received.

The comments inspired me to develop the idea. To that end I've tried this approach. The day was 17th June 1979, the event was Doncaster Works open day. I had arrived behind the Doncaster Derby rail tour hauled by 20066 and 20162.

The watermark is 55004 turned out in ex works condition but if i remember rightly she had donated her engines to keep others going.

The notes show part of the locos seen at the works and some observations as the rail tour went up the east coast mainline. Also a few local notes from the 23/6/79.

I keep a paper record of the photos I add to my two 365 groups. This is the list for the daily self-portrait group 365 Days of which (by dint of long-service) I'm one of the admins.

You will note that this is photograph 3543 of my daily selfies. Early in 2007 I saw Flickr folk posting daily self-portraits but I'd missed the obvious starting point of the First of January so I waited until my 65th birthday on 21 April 2007

I haphazardly collect old and new hymn books. I bought these two from the historical library at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, VA, while doing some research there. The open book is The Sacred Hymnal, a shape note tunebook from the Ruebush Kieffer Co., the main focus of my recent research efforts. Edited by J. H. Hall, J. H. Ruebush, and W. H. Ruebush, the book was published in 1899 and intended for worship services, prayer meetings, Sunday school, revivals, and other religious meetings. It contains 200 hymns divided into 7 sections: worship, man’s ruin and redemption, the Christian life, the Christian church, young people’s department, the life beyond, and miscellaneous.

The other book is Sacred Songs No.1, edited by Ira D. Sankey, James McGranahan, and George C. Stebbins. The book is in round notes and published by the Biglow and Main Company of New York in 1896. Sankey and Philip Bliss were instrumental in the formation of gospel music, publishing their first collection of songs for gospel meetings in 1875. The book includes many new songs along with “useful and popular pieces,” making it “practical and desirable.” Many sacred and gospel music publishers in the late 19th century issued new songbooks on a regular basis, suggesting that the public sang regularly from the published books and had an appetite for new songs. The editors express their hope that the book will be useful in churches and prayers meetings, as well as in the home so that “the good old-time custom of singing the praises of God in the home may again be revived.”

An age old form of communication. From the elementary notes passed furtively from desk to desk in the classroom between giggling children to the more serious messages of eternal love penned by lovestruck teenagers then stuck in lockers or jacket pockets. As parents we leave these in our children's lunches for them to find as a treat along with their cookies.

They served their purpose as they still do. Like a love letter they are by nature short and to the point; "see you, love you, til later, til then." Short on paper but long on meaning.

There is nothing better than to find one of these jewels, a touching note, a humorous jibe, a reminder to accomplish, or maybe a date. Handy little things these notes are. But mostly, they are a reminder that I'm thinking of you and soon I'll be with you; hopefully sooner, maybe later, but I am thinking about you enough to write it.

This particular love note embellished with one of phyl's anniversary roses.

Love you!
