Burmese 500 kip note showing a water buffalo and its handler plowing a paddy field, these animals are still to be seen on every field and farm they were ubiquitous in their presence. They pull carts of produce and people.

As Burma opens up to the world and mechanisation gradually replaces beasts of burden there may come a day when water buffaloes are consigned to exhibits in zoos and children’s parks.

Love notes for the teachers and staff at Cassie's school :)

Today was fabulous. Went on another shopping trip for some more warm clothes... so unlike me!! I never shop. So it's been fun. Tomorrow i'll be going back for a pair of boots they didn't have in my size. :)

Happy Sunday everyone.

This image was taken at Duckhole Lake in the Hastings Caves State Reserve area in Tasmania, Australia.

Duckhole Lake is a flooded sinkhole that is part of the surrounding cave and karst landscape.

The start of the 1.8 kilometre boardwalk can be reached from the turnoff along the Hastings Cave Rd, after the Visitor Centre, into Chestermans Rd, which then leads to Coal Hill Rd. Note that these are single land roads.

The road leading to the Duckhole Lake track includes 3 kilometres of basically a single lane dirt road which you have to negotiate in the process of avoiding massive timber trucks coming the other way.

I recommend using a 4 wheel drive vehicle and only attempting to negotiate this track off Hastings Caves road in daylight . (i was in a Toyota Corolla hire car and had very white knuckles and even whiter face going up this one). There is a less 'risky ' alternative way to get there in a normal vehicle which i discovered after the event.

Dont be put off by the trouble of getting there. The walking track along the way to the Lake is sensational-

I collected several wonderful rainforest images of creekbeds, ferns trees, moss covered trees stumps and other features on the track to the Lake itself which I will be posting here on Flickr.

INDIGENOUS HISTORY

Tasmania was totally inhabited by an indigenous population, the Tasmanian Aborigines, and evidence indicates their presence in the territory, later to become an island, at least 35 000 years ago.

The social organisation of Tasmanian Aborigines had three distinct levels: the domestic unit or family group, the social unit or band which had a self- defining name with 40 to 50 people, and collections of bands comprising tribes which owned territories. Even though territories were owned there was substantial movement and migration by bands to utilise and share abundant food resources in particular seasons.

It is believed that prior to European arrival in Tasmania, the Aboriginal people of Tasmania had a combined population of from 5,000 to 10,000 people.

The Tasmanian aborigines were a primarily nomadic people who lived in adjoining territory, moving from area to area based on seasonal changes in food supplies such as seafood, land mammals and native vegetables and berries.

The different tribes shared similar languages and culture. They socialized, intermarried and fought 'wars' against other tribes.

There were at least 50 bands prior to European colonisation, although only 48 have been located and associated with particular territories. Nine tribes were composed of three to ten bands. The Eastern and northern Group consisted of the Oyster Bay Tribe, North East Tribe, and the North Tribe. the Midlands Group consisted of the Big River Tribe, North Midlands Tribe and Ben Lomond Tribe. The Maritime Group consisted of the North West Tribe, South West Tribe and South East Tribe.

Following British settlement in 1803, persecution and disease the much of the population was eradicated (but some descendants still survive). The impact of introduced diseases, prior to the first European estimates of the size of Tasmania's population, means that the original indigenous population could have been somewhat larger than 5,000.

It was falsely reported that the last full-blooded Tasmanian Aborigine Truganini died near Hobart in 1876, but in fact other 'full-bloods' still survived at that time. Truganini was invited to join them on one of the Bass Strait Islands to which the Whites had removed them, but she preferred to die on her own people's land.

Aboriginal places and landscapes have a strong and continuing significance to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community. Southport lay within the territory of the South Eastern Tribe which occupied an area covering over 3,000 square kilometres and over 550 km of Tasmania's coastline.

Frost and ice in Florida? Yes! We have many winter days with temps (F) in the 20s. Hard freezes and frost is not uncommon. One year it was so cold that the giant wild pythons in the Everglades were freezing to death, and it even got to freezing temps in the Keys! The saving grace is that it might be 30F when you wake up, but then later in the day it will warm to 60F! And we have a pretty decent amount of sunshine most of the time.

These are micro shots of ice crystals from the frost on various bits of vegetation in my yard. I have to shoot them early in the morning because even the heat from my breath will start them to melting, and even if the temp is 30F, when the sun hits the yard the frost vanishes in minutes so I have to move fast.

The Nature Spirits have provided me with some delicious abstracts and personal appearances in these micro shots...read the descriptions I’ve written and view the notes I’ve placed on some of the photos, and then view them at their largest sizes available and you’ll be amazed, too!

View more of these intriguing shots I feel like I’ve received as a gift in my set titled “Jack Frost:”

Our local CFUW ( Canadian Federation of University Women ) is a serious organization....with worthy credentials..... of course....but we are also a very social group...and the "gourmet group " provides us with lots of good food, friends, and fun ...and I shoot these ocassions for our archives !

Italian dinner tonight.... and everything excellent..... and a good excuse to set the table careully, with all the best stuff ( and then we discuss what to do with all these nice things eventually....most of our children don't want all that fancy stuff...and don't have room for it ...exception here.... one of Susan's daughters DOES love these things...she will treasure them.)
