Elongated nostrils , three sets of eyelids and two rows of eyelashes on each eye . They also have thick lips . All are adaptations to keep sand away from their eyes and able to eat thorny plants without hurting their lips .

She's blowing air out her nostrils as she's going for the salmon and her snout looks exactly like a pig's snout to me in this picture, LOL.

TUBE NOSTRILS, puts the fulmar, with the family of the shearwaters and petrels, not a gull, to watch these birds with stiffly held wings and effortless gliding action, captured from the top of the cliffs at Northforland Margate, Kent. U.K are a joy to watch, they nest in the chalk cliffs. Please zoom in to see the tube nose! (110 cm in length)

At that afternoon on our way to South Georgia a group of 200 Humpback whales gathered very closely around our ship and gave us an amazing show for a whole half an hour or more. The whales were almost touching our ship so I was able to take this amazing picture just from above it!

Macro Mondays theme Pair
We all sniff in stereo, some of us more than others!
This is a pair of nostrils belonging to Cookie the Black Lab. Sniffing is Cookie's favourite pastime. He is sitting here with great control and sniffing the treats that I was feeding him for his pose - he doesn't like the camera much but nothing a bit of bribary can't sort out HMM! 😄

Last week, while visiting plant farms, we unexpectedly came across this wonderful Scottish Highland Cow! I've never seen one in person, although I have a wonderful *tin* painted with a likeness (will post later) . . .
Couldn't resist this "fence" scene!
Grizzly nostrils during the spin cycle, LOL
I was shooting with a pretty slow shutter speed when he started shaking the water off his head. He was just sitting in the river by the banks under some willow branches grabbing a salmon here and there as they'd float by him. Was hoping I'd get at least one nostril in focus. I did, LOL. Thought it made for a kinda cool shot
I hope you can view this on a larger screen. You'll get a much better appreciation for the photo
A whiff of whisky flirted with his nostrils. Real or imagined? He did not know, because there was no bottle or glass on the rock next to him but somehow he could smell it. Glenfiddich he reckoned. 12 year old. It misted his eyes as they scanned the horizon, distant pointy faded blue peaks......islands in the stream. Dreamy. The isles of Muck, Eigg and Rum.
He always wanted to see into the future, over the horizon. This is his new horizon, recently discovered, but lying unexplored. New horizons, future dreams.
Behind him were mistakes and dreams of the past, Failures, challenges never overcome. Unfulfilled.
And dreams of the present, hovering between here and the islands. Could he carry them into the future? Life only travels in one direction. No going back. Although it would be nice. For some things, now just memories, locked away in a compartment at the back of the mind, to be lifted out carefully every so often, burnished and savoured for one more lift of the heart.
Oh yes, it is Glenfiddich. Not tasted for about 40 years. Distinctive. Another memory of a different era when all of life still lay on the horizon. And he could hear trance music too.
But what of the here and now? What, where? So many unknowns' Life, all so weird.

Anhinga photographed along the Cuiaba River in the Pantanal, Brazil.
The Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga), sometimes called Snakebird, Darter, American Darter, or Water Turkey, is a water bird of the warmer parts of the Americas. The word anhinga comes from the Brazilian Tupi language and means devil bird or snake bird.
It is a cormorant-like bird with an average body length of 85 cm (33 in), a wingspan of 117 cm (46 in), and a mass of up to 1.35 kg (3.0 lb). It is a dark-plumaged piscivore with a very long neck, and often swims with only the neck above water. When swimming in this style the name Snakebird is apparent, since only the colored neck appears above water the bird looks like a snake ready to strike. They do not have external nares (nostrils) and breathe solely through their epiglottis.
The Anhinga is placed in the darter family, Anhingidae, and is closely related to Indian (Anhinga melanogaster), African (A. rufa), and Australian (A. novaehollandiae) Darters. Like other darters, the Anhinga hunts by spearing fishes and other small prey using its sharp, slender beak.
Taken on 6 December 2023 and uploaded on 28 May 2025.
Taken using my (then) new (to me) Nikon D610: a pair of seagulls perched (?) on the fence at the east end of Gravesend's Gordon Promenade. The closer one is, I think, a Black Headed Gull in non breeding plumage and probably a grown up: I found all that on www, www.wwt.org.uk/ and also, elsewhere, that seagulls have nostrils, not only for breathing but excreting salt, allowing them to drink sea-water. Clever ! For those interested in nostrils, they are also, here, (seagulls) known as external nares: and why not, as Barry Norman would have said, if asked.
I can be corrected if I'm wrong, as I may be and often am.

Just thinking! What are the eyes going to look like against the Google search screen? Oops....I mean nostrils!

During the winter months in the Po Valley , the fog is a part of the landscape, cold, dump, almost tangible.
Fog is moisture in the nostrils, is a limited landscapes. You feel isolated, almost blinded by the white. The gaze is limited and the fog tracks the boundaries.
There are places you always pass by, common places that turn invisible, canceled by the chaos of buildings and constructions.
The fog, greedy of space, grants you the crumbs of what encompasses, defines the boundaries forcibly, giving back, sarcastically, the most common details.
These details turn unique, eye-catching, aesthetically ready for photographic consecration.
The streets, the buildings and the fields are transformed into landscapes that you can only imagine. A pole, the wires of the light, a gasoline station is all that you can see.
They are the boundaries the fog gives you.”
CONFINI

Dinner Time!
This mated couple were dipping their heads to gather food as they swam around the wetland area adjacent to the lake.
Check out the gander in the back: you can actually see the grass through his nostrils. Those nares have a closing mechanism to allow them to stay under water eating the submerged vegetation.
And … Happy 54th. Earth Day!
LIBERTY LAKE REGIONAL PARK
Liberty Lake was originally part of the Coeur d’Alene tribal lands. Later, ranchers drained the wetlands for farming both here and in the nearby Saltese Flats.
Both wetland areas are being reclaimed and wildlife (eg.ducks and a lot of gander and dame mated pairs) are returning - so around sunset, you can hear the gaggle’s calls across the length of the lake. The cottonwoods and river birches are starting to leaf out. Spring is here!

In the summer these beautiful snakes can be found in many places at night looking for emerging cicadas. Don't walk in the forest at night without a flashlight.... Series of six images.
These pit vipers have heat sensors seen here as bilateral white spots between and below the eyes.
Mallard Drake with view right through both nostrils! I don't know why but that always seems cool when that happens.
For many years I've been on the trail of the legendary Welsh Dragons. In my spare time I've studied numerous reports of sightings of these fine, graceful creatures but alas each time I've visited a location of a confirmed sighting I'm always just too late however that was about to change. I was out walking in the local Welsh hills yesterday when I heard heavy snoring coming from behind some large granite rocks. This was no ordinary snore, no human has lungs that sound like that. As I carefully walked around the rocks there, fast asleep, was a Welsh Dragon, curled up with its head resting on a one of its front legs. I immediately thought of today's Macro Monday challenge so at great personel risk of being turned into a lump of charcoal I carefully inserted my camera lens into one nostril and took a photograph of the hairs inside. It was a bright sunny day so there was enough illumination to get the shot. It was obvious, when reviewing my capture here at home, that it had not long been flaming something as some of the hairs were glowing as they cooled.

These pale little mites feed on the nectar from a single species of flower and to get to a new flower they hitch a lift in a hummingbird's nostrils. When the hummer feeds from their special flower, the mites run down its beak to feed. Then as the bird moves away they either stay on the flower or rush back up the beak and back into the nostrils.
There's a funny story to accompany this: I shot photos at a party; I was sitting when this woman approached me to talk and I raised my camera and shot and captured mostly the insides of her nostril! I thought it was a delightful photo, and others did, too (including my photography instructor who encouraged me to do more and began to shoot a few of her own) so I started the nostril series, but with no real dedication. The funniest part is that while the old lady and I were on a cruise we got to talking with this guy who was a phenomenal guitarist, and became friends...he would come sit at our table after a set and we would gab. The old lady mentions the nostril photos, and so he winds up going back to the mike for his next set and announces that, "Ladies and Gentlemen, we have in our audience tonight the world-famous nostril photographer, John Russell!" We laughed our asses off, and most people didn't have the nerve to approach us and ask what in hell a nostril photographer was! :-D
