The harbour seal is a true seal found along temperate and Arctic marine coastlines of the Northern Hemisphere. The most widely distributed species of pinniped (walruses, eared seals, and true seals), they are found in coastal waters of the northern Atlantic, Pacific Oceans, Baltic and North Seas.
Harbor seals are brown, silvery white, tan, or gray, with distinctive V-shaped nostrils. An adult can attain a length of 1.85 m (6.1 ft) and a mass of up to 168 kg (370 lb). Blubber under the seal's skin helps to maintain body temperature. Females outlive males (30–35 years versus 20–25 years). Harbor seals stick to familiar resting spots or haulout sites, generally rocky areas (although ice, sand, and mud may also be used) where they are protected from adverse weather conditions and predation, near a foraging area. Elongated nostrils , three sets of eyelids and two rows of eyelashes on each eye . They also have thick lips . All are adaptations to keep sand away from their eyes and able to eat thorny plants without hurting their lips .

The bee-eaters are generally similar in appearance, although they are normally divided into three genera.
Nyctyornis comprises two large species with long throat feathers, the blue-bearded bee-eater and the red-bearded bee-eater, both of which have rounded wings, a ridged culmen, feathered nostrils and a relatively sluggish lifestyle.
The purple-bearded bee-eater is the sole member of Meropogon, which is intermediate between Nyctyornis and the typical bee-eaters, having rounded wings and a "beard", but a smooth culmen and no nostril feathers. All the remaining species are normally retained in the single genus Merops.
She's blowing air out her nostrils as she's going for the salmon and her snout looks exactly like a pig's snout to me in this picture, LOL.

Wikipedia: The banded bay cuckoo or bay-banded cuckoo (Cacomantis sonneratii) is a species of small cuckoo found in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Like others in the genus they have a round nostril. Like many other cuckoos, they are brood-parasitic and hosts recorded include the common iora, red-whiskered bulbul, white-bellied erpornis, scarlet minivet, bulbuls and small babblers (Stachyris spp.). The eggs resemble those of the hosts. The incubation and nesting are not well documented. Fledglings of the host are evicted.

The anhinga (Anhinga anhinga), sometimes called snakebird, darter, American darter, or water turkey, is a water bird of the warmer parts of the Americas. The word anhinga comes from the Brazilian Tupi language and means devil bird or snake bird. A. a. leucogaster can be found in the southern United States, Mexico, Cuba, and Grenada. A fossil species Anhinga walterbolesi has been described from the Late Oligocene to Early Miocene of Australia.
Only birds that live in the extreme north and south of their range migrate and do so based on temperature and available sunlight. Anhingas will migrate towards the equator during winter but this range is "determined by the amount of sunshine to warm the chilled birds". "The gray-and-white Northern Fulmar looks like a gull, but its stiff-winged flight and swift glides, not to mention the nostril tubes on its bill, mark it as a relative of petrels and albatrosses. These stout-bodied seabirds are abundant in the bitterly cold northern Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic Oceans, where they feed over deep waters. They use their powerful sense of smell to sniff out fish, squid, and crustaceans. After a short breeding season at colonies on steep cliffs, they return to the open ocean for the rest of the year.
When nesting, fulmars generally forage in the vicinity of their colonies but sometimes travel more than 600 miles round trip to procure food for the nestling.
The Northern Fulmar is one of the longest-lived birds, with adults regularly living into their 30s. In Scotland, several Northern Fulmars banded as adults in 1951 were still breeding in 1990, probably in their 50s."

An inquisitive little frog came leaping towards us on you way down Harter Fell, and sat for a few quick photos.
The Farne Islands is one of the largest North Sea breeding grounds for Grey Seals. This female's profile shows the long, dog like muzzle with sloping forehead and parrallel nostrils of the Grey Seal.
A swan and the full moon at sunset at Horn Pond in Woburn, MA, in the Boston suburbs. Taken with iPhone 6s and edited in Snapseed. And by the way, taking photos with my phone held out over water like this is why I have a wrist strap on my iPhone case!
I used Instagram's location browse to scope out all the nearby ponds and see which ones had swans living there, and I used The Photographer’s Ephemeris (iOS app) to figure out which ponds would have good sunset angles at this time of year. The combination of those led me to Horn’s Pond, and it was such a perfect spot, I will definitely be going back.
Hmm... This comment might take away a little from the beauty and serenity of the scene, but I keep thinking it's sort of freaky how you can see through the swan's nostril and out the other side.
Sophie inhaled deeply through her nose, held her breath and then exhaled, her nostrils flaring as she did so. She repeated her breathing a few times and then started jumping on pointe, holding her arms ramrod straight and stiff by her side, yet allowing her wrists to be loose and her hands to flap about like tiny wings. The excitement around her in the wings was palpable as members of the corps de ballet gathered about, giggling, gasping, pointing at her whilst looking at her imposing figure and costume with admiration, smiling shyly at her.
It was not so very long ago that Sophie had been a member of this troupe that made up the backbone of the performance. She had danced her way through as a member of the swan flock countless times in Swan Lake and as a snowflake in the Nutcracker. She had worked her way up over the years, entering as an Élève – an apprentice – before becoming a member of the Quadrille where she danced in line with all the others, supporting the principal dancers. When the ballet staged La Bayadère, Sophie was invited to be one of the three Coryphées – fitrst artists – to lead the he corps de ballet through the intricate, repeated patterns of Les Ombres, and she excelled herself. After playing various faeries in Sleeping Beauty, and friends to the leads in Giselle and Don Quixote over time, she proved herself to move up to a Grand Sujet and play Pas de Trois in Swan Lake. Now after all this time, she was no longer playing a Lead Sylph in Les Sylphides, or performing the Peasant Pas de Deux in Giselle. She was a Premier Danseur, and about to make her debut as Cinderella.
And then her moment came and Sophie found herself on stage. As she danced beneath the theatre’s spotlight, she felt the happiness, the exhilaration, the jubilation she always did as she performed with grace on pointe. Although her performance was highly orchestrated, dancing gave Sophie a sense of freedom she never felt at any other time in her life. She needed no wings to fly, only her dainty feet to lift her up and spin her again, and again as again with precision and perfection. Her heart soared high above her, beating with pride. When she finished her first solo as she puffed ragged breaths in and out, all she could hear was the thud of her heartbeats pulsating in her ears. Then it began: the clapping of a pair of hands, two, ten, a hundred, several hundred, a crescendo of applause lifting her spirits higher. It was at that moment, as blinded by the brightness of the spotlight, she made a deep curtsey to her unseen audience beyond the harsh whiteness, Sophie knew she was where she belonged. She was a success! She was home!
The other day I received a purchase from Etsy of an envelope full of beautifully laser cut ballerinas made of crisp white paper. I was particularly enamoured by this lovely one and her exuberant pose. It was a cloudy and overcast day, but I still managed to create a spotlight for this beauty against a black background.
This image I would like to dedicate to my dear Flickr friend FinouCat who loves dancing in all its forms. My wish for her is that she rises on pointe like ma petite danseuse.

I was taking other pictures when this female fox materialized before me about 20 feet away. The same fox as I had seen a couple of days before. Sadly she had an injury to her left nostril which I had to mend for the photo. She has a mate, a much larger male which we have also seen in the vicinity.

At that afternoon on our way to South Georgia a group of 200 Humpback whales gathered very closely around our ship and gave us an amazing show for a whole half an hour or more. The whales were almost touching our ship so I was able to take this amazing picture just from above it!
Although our largest land carnivore, less than 2% of their attempts to catch prey are successful. With their powerful nostrils they are able to detect seal breathing holes up to a meter away. Once found they patiently wait for the seals to make an appearance. Other than that they will settle for smaller mammals, carcasses, eggs and even plant food.
Even though their favourite habitat is pack ice, open sea and coastal land, they will wander as far as 200 kilometres inland in search iof food. In spite of this, there are presently about 26,000 in the wild, of which 60% are found in Canada, and they live to about 25 years of age.
Global warming has made them a vulnerable species, which would help explain their diminishing numbers. In fact, compared to their predecessors of the early C20th, they have shrunk in size. It is during the summer months that they are particular hard hit, when much of the ice recedes.

Gannets hunt fish by diving from a height into the sea and pursuing their prey underwater. Gannets have a number of adaptations which enable them to do this:
no external nostrils, they are located inside the mouth instead;
air sacs in the face and chest under the skin which act like bubble wrapping, cushioning the impact with the water;
positioning of the eyes far enough forward on the face for binocular vision, allowing them to judge distances accurately.
Gannets can dive from a height of 30 metres (98 ft), achieving speeds of 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) as they strike the water, enabling them to catch fish much deeper than most airborne birds.

On a cold day with Simba preoccupied by rabbit holes, I finally had the chance to put my hand out to greet the neighbours. :-)
I went up two flights of stairs, and came upon a narrow balcony with access to the upper rooms, two to the left and two to the right. The ones on my left were closed too - What bad luck - I thought... but I didn't give up and went back to see the other two that remained. Walking towards the back of the balcony, I pass a room that had the door and window open, but as I was getting more and more dizzy from fatigue and the Mojito, I barely noticed.
I take a few steps back and peek into the room through the half-open window... Yes, it was empty, but... with some personal and intimate items, as well as underwear scattered around the room too... - Hmm, this one fourth belongs to "someone"... but where is this "someone" ? - I thought!
I didn't want to know... I went inside the room, I saw that there was "life" in this room, but I was focused on taking a shower and sleeping... However, there was a fragrance in the room that had already passed through my nostrils... My tiredness was too strong for me to remember where and what fragrance I felt...
I took off my shorts and went to the shower!

This is a pair of nostrils belonging to Cookie the Black Lab. Sniffing is Cookie's favourite pastime. He is sitting here with great control and sniffing the treats that I was feeding him for his pose - he doesn't like the camera much but nothing a bit of bribary can't sort out HMM! 😄

A lovely tea room, toy shop, gift center, bakery and sweet shop were also found here, including the BEST fudge I've ever tasted!

Nostrils flared, eyes that were designed to focus underwater - what do they see when the animal surfaces? I have no idea.
Seals are a common sight along the west coast, but rarely as close as this. In Victoria, this one was hanging out at a marina, hoping for fish scraps. Easy pickings, but it does epitomize the negative aspect of our relationship with most wild animals.
I believe restrictions were placed on this spot in recent years due to fear that some child would get injured. I'm fine with that; these critters are not pets. To treat them as such does them a great disservice, and to involve children teaches them a false lesson about how to interact with wild creatures.
It was a great photo op, though.

Grizzly nostrils during the spin cycle, LOL
I was shooting with a pretty slow shutter speed when he started shaking the water off his head. He was just sitting in the river by the banks under some willow branches grabbing a salmon here and there as they'd float by him. Was hoping I'd get at least one nostril in focus. I did, LOL. Thought it made for a kinda cool shot

The Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga), sometimes called Snakebird, Darter, American Darter, or Water Turkey, is a water bird of the warmer parts of the Americas. The word anhinga comes from the Brazilian Tupi language and means devil bird or snake bird.
It is a cormorant-like bird with an average body length of 85 cm (33 in), a wingspan of 117 cm (46 in), and a mass of up to 1.35 kg (3.0 lb). It is a dark-plumaged piscivore with a very long neck, and often swims with only the neck above water. When swimming in this style the name Snakebird is apparent, since only the colored neck appears above water the bird looks like a snake ready to strike. They do not have external nares (nostrils) and breathe solely through their epiglottis.
The Anhinga is placed in the darter family, Anhingidae, and is closely related to Indian (Anhinga melanogaster), African (A. rufa), and Australian (A. novaehollandiae) Darters. Like other darters, the Anhinga hunts by spearing fishes and other small prey using its sharp, slender beak.

La tête du Fulma boréal est blanche, l'œil est entouré d'un petit masque noir, les couvertures des ailes et le croupion sont gris, les rémiges primaires et secondaires sont sombres et l'extrémité de la queue est blanche.
Le bec crochu jaune et gris du fulmar est très particulier : les narines forment des tubes.
Procellariids (petrels, fulmars and shearwaters) are seabirds of small to large size.
All have tubular nostrils at the base of the beak.
With their wings most often long and narrow, they are profiled for long-distance movements in the deep sea.
The head of the northern fulma is white, the eye is surrounded by a small black mask, the covers of the wings and the rump are gray, the primary and secondary feathers are dark and the end of the tail is white.
The yellow and gray hooked beak of the fulmar is very particular: the nostrils form tubes.
