Wikipedia: The banded bay cuckoo or bay-banded cuckoo (Cacomantis sonneratii) is a species of small cuckoo found in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Like others in the genus they have a round nostril. Like many other cuckoos, they are brood-parasitic and hosts recorded include the common iora, red-whiskered bulbul, white-bellied erpornis, scarlet minivet, bulbuls and small babblers (Stachyris spp.). The eggs resemble those of the hosts. The incubation and nesting are not well documented. Fledglings of the host are evicted.

Good day gentleladies and gentlelords,

today I'm sharing something special with you! I'm very, very excited about this picture! It's featuring not only Dura's new hair but also the creator himself. Thank you so much for your support and taking your time to join me in this ad picture, Chiaki-sensei! It was so much fun! (*´▽`*) ♡

Dura's hair will be available at the new round of Equal 10 and comes with three different styling options! I tend to say this more than I should but I think this is going to be my new favorite hair. It's so smooth and detailed. I love it! Before I start rambling about how much I love this hair, I want to give a huuuge THANK YOUUUUU to my bromance-boy, Filippo. Thank you for gifting me this amazing outfit from Toksik! You are the kindest person I know! Seriously, you are amazing.

Also, I want to kindly thank Toksik for their breathtaking work! I am amazed by the quality and originality of each item. Your work is really amazing!!! Last but not least I want to thank Cerberus for invading my home (with permission of course) and supporting me with stares (≧▽≦)

I wish you a wonderful weekend and hope to see you all at Equal10! Take care you guys and stay safe! (* ̄▽ ̄)b

It was getting harder to breathe, despite the fresh air around her. The smell of rain that she adored was always lingering on the tip of her nostrils. Time could be equally cruel as much as a blessing.

"I'm getting tired trying to hold the umbrella up for you." it grumbled, muttering some gibberish while following her around the open field.

A tired old meow escaped the fluffy gray one cuddled into her hoody basket while she just hummed a tune, it was the rain's favorite tune. She recalled the excitement whenever the music played. Another sigh escaped her as she looked up in the clear sky, closing her eyes, remembering.

"You are taking the rain with you everywhere anyways!" It exclaimed, "It will always be a part of you."

"I know, it's just..." she sighed deeply, "I took for granted the short time we had together. I complained, I whined and I didn't treasure it enough. I thought the rain would never go away..." she admitted, "And now that it is going...will be gone, I am going to miss it dearly." she inhaled a breath of air, holding on to what seemed like the last few moments of rain till it will become but fragments of her memory.

It petted the cat that started purring before snoozing, "You will find the rain again, someday, when time permits. You know the rain loves you." It said, giving her hope while trying to lift the umbrella further over her head.

She didn't say anything for now, she just enjoyed the thoughts, the memories, the regret and the hope towards her rain that she also love with all her heart and soul. It was what helped make her who she was today after all.

P.S. I took the photo awhile back but I was stuck with some writer's block at the time that the photo was shelved. I finally took it out, dusted it and paired it with this story. My life is going into a new chapter and that's pretty much how I feel about it. Luckily, I have amazing people with me I am lucky to call friends who are there when I need them the most without me asking.

Ameya, despite our crazy time zone, you always poke me and leave me hugs. They mean a lot to me even if we do not get to talk longer because of how weird I could be out running errands or sleeping.

Sapphy, for always supporting me through anything I do and leaving me messages, the fact you restarted taking photos again just because of Lightning Bolt means a lot to me.

Last few days were rough but you all helped me through it and I am going to keep pushing on! Thank you so much!

We experienced lovely, mild weather; not frigid. And like I've mentioned, being able to actually "smell" the environment of spring is so wonderful, as well as hearing Robins and the like! The absence of sensation during all the frozen months is rough if you appreciate smelling the joyous parts of nature, or hearing the sounds

Its also lovely to not experience a burning sensation in both your nostrils and lungs every time you inhale ‍😄

The North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) passes right through this area and continues on to the Western terminus at Lake Sakakawea in ND. This trail's Eastern terminus originates in Vermont and the trail spans 4700-4800 mi., so wild! I'm very fascinated with this unique trail.

At that afternoon on our way to South Georgia a group of 200 Humpback whales gathered very closely around our ship and gave us an amazing show for a whole half an hour or more. The whales were almost touching our ship so I was able to take this amazing picture just from above it!

Caimans are patient hunters, using stealth to their advantage. They stay perfectly still in the water, with only their eyes and nostrils above the surface, blending into their surroundings. When prey like fish or birds gets close, they strike with lightning speed, snapping their powerful jaws shut. After catching their prey, they often drag it underwater to drown or subdue it. With strong tails that help them maneuver, caimans are well-adapted to ambush hunting, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. The caiman’s cunning is food for thought, but in nature, Camen is food for the jaguar.

Seconds before making this image, both Reed Warbler foster parents had flown in with food and yet still the chick's beak gapes open!

Since some of what goes in eventually has to come out, the dutiful R.W hung around, waiting to remove a faecal sac. I noticed this occurred about every 3-4 feeds.

Anhinga male Florida.

Blue eye shadow means mating season. Anhingas develop this bright blue around the eyes when they are in mating season.

The anhinga (/ænˈhɪŋɡə/; Anhinga anhinga), sometimes called snakebird, darter, American darter, or water turkey, is a water bird of the warmer parts of the Americas. The word anhinga comes from the Brazilian Tupi language and means devil bird or snake bird. When swimming the origin of the name snakebird is apparent: only the colored neck appears above water so the bird looks like a snake ready to strike. They do not have external nares (nostrils) and breathe solely through their epiglottis.

The anhinga is placed in the darter family, Anhingidae, and is closely related to Indian (Anhinga melanogaster), African (A. rufa), and Australian (A. novaehollandiae) darters. Like other darters, the anhinga hunts by spearing fishes and other small prey using its sharp, slender beak. (Copied from Wikipedia)

Last week, while visiting plant farms, we unexpectedly came across this wonderful Scottish Highland Cow! I've never seen one in person, although I have a wonderful *tin* painted with a likeness (will post later) . . .

Couldn't resist this "fence" scene!

Grizzly nostrils during the spin cycle, LOL

I was shooting with a pretty slow shutter speed when he started shaking the water off his head. He was just sitting in the river by the banks under some willow branches grabbing a salmon here and there as they'd float by him. Was hoping I'd get at least one nostril in focus. I did, LOL. Thought it made for a kinda cool shot

I hope you can view this on a larger screen. You'll get a much better appreciation for the photo

looked quite funny this seal with just the nostrils coming my way

A whiff of whisky flirted with his nostrils. Real or imagined? He did not know, because there was no bottle or glass on the rock next to him but somehow he could smell it. Glenfiddich he reckoned. 12 year old. It misted his eyes as they scanned the horizon, distant pointy faded blue peaks......islands in the stream. Dreamy. The isles of Muck, Eigg and Rum.

He always wanted to see into the future, over the horizon. This is his new horizon, recently discovered, but lying unexplored. New horizons, future dreams.

Behind him were mistakes and dreams of the past, Failures, challenges never overcome. Unfulfilled.

And dreams of the present, hovering between here and the islands. Could he carry them into the future? Life only travels in one direction. No going back. Although it would be nice. For some things, now just memories, locked away in a compartment at the back of the mind, to be lifted out carefully every so often, burnished and savoured for one more lift of the heart.

Oh yes, it is Glenfiddich. Not tasted for about 40 years. Distinctive. Another memory of a different era when all of life still lay on the horizon. And he could hear trance music too.

But what of the here and now? What, where? So many unknowns' Life, all so weird.

Cuiaba River

The Pantanal

Brazil

South America

Anhinga photographed along the Cuiaba River in the Pantanal, Brazil.

The Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga), sometimes called Snakebird, Darter, American Darter, or Water Turkey, is a water bird of the warmer parts of the Americas. The word anhinga comes from the Brazilian Tupi language and means devil bird or snake bird.

It is a cormorant-like bird with an average body length of 85 cm (33 in), a wingspan of 117 cm (46 in), and a mass of up to 1.35 kg (3.0 lb). It is a dark-plumaged piscivore with a very long neck, and often swims with only the neck above water. When swimming in this style the name Snakebird is apparent, since only the colored neck appears above water the bird looks like a snake ready to strike.

They got very wet!!!

One of these calves was the reluctant one from yesterday, obviously with him mate around having his photo taken wasn't too bad.

Thanks for the views, faves and comments.

Taken on 6 December 2023 and uploaded on 28 May 2025.

Taken using my (then) new (to me) Nikon D610: a pair of seagulls perched (?) on the fence at the east end of Gravesend's Gordon Promenade. The closer one is, I think, a Black Headed Gull in non breeding plumage and probably a grown up: I found all that on www, www.wwt.org.uk/ and also, elsewhere, that seagulls have nostrils, not only for breathing but excreting salt, allowing them to drink sea-water. Clever ! For those interested in nostrils, they are also, here, (seagulls) known as external nares: and why not, as Barry Norman would have said, if asked.

I can be corrected if I'm wrong, as I may be and often am.

[DSC_1122a]

I was expecting to come away here with just the one image, and even then only if luck was on my side. But the pristine native woodland with the river running through the narrow gorge was proving to be an instant hit. There are a lot of eye-catching places in these islands, most of them I’ll never see at all, but as experiences go, this one surely ranked among the most perfect examples of untainted wilderness I’d walked through. Those trees! If you told me the entire place had been designed by an award winning arboreal architect, I’d probably believe you. It was impossible to imagine how it might be improved upon, and the only regret was that we weren’t here for long. Well ok, add one more - we didn’t see any red squirrels, but now I’m just nitpicking. I could happily waste a day or two in this peaceful forest, where soft rains drip through the canopy to splash the foliage in a riotous symphony of saturated greens and yellows. It’s a glorious place in which to try one’s hand at woodland photography, but perhaps an even better hideaway where you can simply abandon the outside world and lose yourself in daydreams.

The one thing that was as far removed from serene as it’s possible to imagine was the River Pattack, fuelled by day upon day of rainfall that had met us at every corner as we travelled through this wondrous landscape. I’d only stumbled across the presence of a promising looking waterfall here on the map a couple of hours earlier, as I looked for places to break for lunch on the journey from our Inverness base to the next at Glencoe. We were already feeling pretty pleased that we’d decided to take the quiet road through the edge of the Cairngorms National Park instead of the rather more obvious Great Glen Route we’d been following for the last five days. It would have been all too easy never to come here, but this was a voyage of discovery and I do love a good waterfall. I’d already photographed the falls and was happy enough, but our cake had a cherry or two on top that we hadn’t been expecting. That huge surge of dark water with a cappuccino foam on its surface, full of purpose, unstoppable on its course towards nearby Loch Laggan. How could we not have even known this place existed until late this morning? I guess the simple answer to that is “Scottish Highlands,” packed with countless beauty spots too numerous to even begin to see them all.

On the stone steps leading down to a natural platform above the wall of watery sound, I composed this shot with little thought. Just a memento of a place that I knew was going to stay with me long after we’d moved on. The sweeping river bend, framed by the breathing forest brimming with fresh summer colours. The ever present yet gentle hint of moisture filling the glade, the chatter of birdsong, the pine scented air in our nostrils. We were a world away from the bustling streets of Inverness now. I certainly wasn’t expecting to share the shot, but as I looked at the unedited file, something inside me said “letterbox crop,” as the picture window view developed in front of me before I’d even touched a single slider. Sometimes you see the finished result before you even point the camera at your subject. With others you don’t realise you’ve got a shot until you sit in front of the raw image and return to that daydream afternoon beneath the trees.

In the ninety odd minutes we spent here, a handful of cars remained parked around us, yet we barely saw a soul - and when we did, they were clearly enjoying the serenity just as much as we were. That itself suggested there was so much more that remained hidden in such a brief visit. Later, writing the story at home, I learned what we’d missed. Another much grander waterfall on higher ground. But it didn’t really matter that much. The enchanted forest and the river that runs through it had brought us under a spell without playing all of their cards. It’s a road that begs to be driven again one day. Maybe if we stay longer, we might just see a red squirrel chasing through the pines - you never know.

This seal appeared to have picked up an infatuating scent and enoying it all. What a bliss!

During the winter months in the Po Valley , the fog is a part of the landscape, cold, dump, almost tangible.

Fog is moisture in the nostrils, is a limited landscapes. You feel isolated, almost blinded by the white. The gaze is limited and the fog tracks the boundaries.

There are places you always pass by, common places that turn invisible, canceled by the chaos of buildings and constructions.

The fog, greedy of space, grants you the crumbs of what encompasses, defines the boundaries forcibly, giving back, sarcastically, the most common details.

These details turn unique, eye-catching, aesthetically ready for photographic consecration.

The streets, the buildings and the fields are transformed into landscapes that you can only imagine. A pole, the wires of the light, a gasoline station is all that you can see.

They are the boundaries the fog gives you.”

CONFINI

The flying foxes (Pteropodidae), a mammal family of bats (Chiroptera), made a lot of noise.
