Sunset day 2 in Milford Sound national park on the kepler track. My Journey through New Zealand sadly did not contain one ring to rule them all but it did contain some incredible views.

Over westridge of Beaufort.

The snow is now very difficult. Ice crusted snow or ice under 2100 m and wind crusted snow above. The snow cover is thin, some steep glaciers are still in blank ice, and the others are just treacherous snowcovered.

But avalanche risk is very low now

Walnut Canyon National Monument (Hopi: Wupatupqa) is a US National Monument located about 16 km south-east of downtown Flagstaff, AR., near Interstate 40. It was proclaimed a national monument on 30 November 1915 by President Woodrow Wilson to preserve the ancient cliff dwellings which I was stood alongside when I took this shot. Imagine going down cliffs like those seen to get your water from the canyon bottom every day...

The canyon rim elevation is 2,040m; the canyon's floor is 110m lower. A 1.4 km long loop trail descends 56m into the canyon, passing 25 cliff dwelling rooms constructed by the Sinagua, a pre-Columbian cultural group that lived in Walnut Canyon from about 1100 to 1250 AD. Other contemporary habitations of the Sinagua people are preserved in the nearby Tuzigoot and Montezuma Castle national monuments.

The canyon lies on the Colorado Plateau and cuts through the Permian Kaibab Limestone, which exposes layers of the Toroweap Formation and Coconino Sandstone beneath. The Kaibab formation also forms the rim of the Grand Canyon. Crossbedding (as clearly seen above) is present in the Coconino Sandstone.

The shaded, north-facing walls (seen above with a scattering of snow on the ground in the shaded area to the right of the rock feature) are covered in fir and ponderosa pine trees. The sunny, south-facing slopes have agaves and several species of cactus including opuntia, echinocereus and cholla. The floor of the canyon is home to several species of walnut trees, for which the canyon is named.

Winter trek through the main ranges track in the Snowy Mountains Australia. Absolutely incredible evening but an extremely cold one.

At 3033 meters, far away from civilization and also from the Cabane Brunet, much lower. A view into its northflank and onto the moraines of the glaciers of the Petit Combin northface. Because it is often icy, a new access, a kind Via ferrata, was made through the cliff (but with snow or ice, it is no better without crampons)

Victorian prudery?

Halton House - 1880's.

Alfred Rothschild.

It was actually raining that day.

Does anyone know if these were sculpted to order, or bought from the continent, like so much of the Rothschild decor and furniture?

Still playing with B&W .

One of my favourite discussions threads. What we seemed to have time for in those early Flickr days!

The Odle Group (Italian: Gruppo delle Odle) is a mountain group in the Dolomites that forms the ridge between Villnöß and Val Gardena in South Tyrol (Italy). The Geisler Group is largely located in the Puez-Geisler Nature Park. The main peak is Sass Rigais (3025 m) in the eastern part of the mountain range.

Digging out the buried tent on the summit of Mt. Rainier with 10 degree weather in July. We were tent bound for 36 hours in whiteout conditions. This is what I saw on 7/9/2005 before we left.

(very) long range shot. The famous north face of the summit of Les Grandes Jorasses. The photo has been taken from Geneva's downtown. A good 50 miles away from the mountain. The heat haze is clearly visible despite de-hazing and other post processing.

On a side note, there are more than 1'000 m from the bottom of the north face to the summit (4'200 m), so quite a good one to climb.

Moments like this have me waking up and telling myself, all I need and all I want is right here. There is nothing like waking up in a tent with the fly off, to a crisp autumn morning. The views, smells and sounds are so calm, I could lie here all day and enjoy this moment.... But I have ADD and I want to take photos, so let's get the day started.

Shot taken at twilight before sunrise, in the vast area where are located the north faces of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen), Dolomites.

The sun had not yet risen from the east, but its imminent presence definitely began to be felt in the air. The atmosphere was still partially obscured by the clouds present throughout the night... somehow seemed determined to prevent the definitive arrival of the sunlight.

As I will show in a photo taken later, the moon was now above the three peaks, slightly to the right, veiled, anyway providing a faint extra lighting to this unique setting.

I decided to don't include the moon in this frame because I do not particularly like pictures with too many elements. It's of course a matter of personal taste.

Here sunlight begins barely to touch the top of the Western Peak and mount Cristallo, I've subsequently photographed the classic three curtain of light but under a much higher sun... so everything worked out in a totally different composition.

Instead, the sole goal of this shot was to fix the oppressive otherworldly atmosphere, something I really didn't want to miss.

From my Oregon Coast adventure with Kristian. We woke up at 5:30am to watch the sunrise at Cannon Beach, which never actually happened, but the foggy morning was just as beautiful. I cannot wait to be back on the West Coast.

Frightening and active seracs on the north face of the north peak of Mount Munday, seen from Rainy Knob basecamp. The bottom of the Catellani route (which reached and climbed the flutings at right in the 1980s) has been totally destroyed by continued wasting of the seracs.
