Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles. Standing at 1,345 metres (4,411 ft) above sea level, it is at the western end of the Grampian Mountains in the Lochaber area of the Scottish Highlands, close to the town of Fort William.

The mountain is a popular destination, attracting an estimated 100,000 ascents a year, around three-quarters of which use the Pony Track from Glen Nevis. The 700-metre (2,300 ft) cliffs of the north face are among the highest in Scotland, providing classic scrambles and rock climbs of all difficulties for climbers and mountaineers. They are also the principal locations in Scotland for ice climbing.

The summit, which is the collapsed dome of an ancient volcano, features the ruins of an observatory which was continuously staffed between 1883 and 1904. The meteorological data collected during this period are still important for understanding Scottish mountain weather. C. T. R. Wilson was inspired to invent the cloud chamber after a period spent working at the observatory.

ODC-Indoors With Natural Light

Today we're under a winter storm watch. Last I measured we got 7" of snow. We are to get 30 mph winds and 2-4" of snow before its over.

The north face of Ben Nevis is riven with buttresses, ridges, towers and pinnacles, and contains many classic scrambles and rock climbs. It is of major importance for British winter climbing, with many of its routes holding snow often until late April. It was one of the first places in Scotland to receive the attention of serious mountaineers, with an ascent of Tower Ridge in 1892 the earliest documented climbing expedition on the Ben. (It was not climbed from bottom to top for another two years).

The Scottish Mountaineering Club's Charles Inglis Clark hut was built below the north face in Coire Leis in 1929. Because of its remote location, it is said to be the only genuine alpine hut in Britain. It remains popular with climbers, especially in winter.

when I realized that it was seven thirty and I was three miles from Gertrude I beat feet back to Johnston's Ridge and saw this and realized Darling Tonia was going to have to wait another couple hours. this is 8:23 pm, about an hour before sunset. I knew I was in for a show.

one sixtieth of a sec wasn't enough to freeze the flowers in the steady and gusting winds, sorry, don't look too close. :-) I haven't developed the dozen of these, if I managed one sharper I'll replace it.

Another scanned slide from my archives.

Was shooting Fuji Velvia back then.

Used to go there twice a year. Mid July and mid September. A lot of the time in September I would only see at most a half a dozen fly in fisherman. My brother and myself had the camp ground all to ourselves.

Wasn't unusual to wake up in the middle of the night and hear a bear sniffing around the edge of my NorthFace Tent.

First time it happened, I laid awake for quite some time.

After that, we would just yell "Hey Bear!" real loud and go back to sleep.

We both had our own tents.

I had a deal with Markair.

I would furnish them with photos and they gave me tickets to any where they flew. Sweet deal!

They once gave me 4 tickets for a shot that they used on the front of their Flight Schedule.

Later, a prominent design house that was using the slide for a brochure lost it. That ended up costing them $1500.00 plus my original usage fee.

Back then, I shot a lot of in camera dupes, so, I wasn't to upset. ;-)

Another dive into the archives, and another look at past triumphs...

Climbing on the north face of Ben Nevis is an almost overwhelming experience, particularly in winter, and I hope this image provides at least a small indication of what it is like.

Gully 3 is one of the easiest routes on the north face, and it does make for a fine introduction to the sheer grandeur of the place.

At this point the gully starts to close in, and I know it sounds daft but as we climbed into the mist I was suddenly struck by how big, how solid, and how unforgiving this mountain was.

Treat this mountain with the utmost respect, and it will deliver a truly unforgettable experience.

It's Ernest Shackleton!...no oops...an Englishman, my own dear Mark, but no less intrepid than Ernest. This wasn't posed btw!

Yesterday was a very big day for me. I set out on a challenge that I have had in mind for some time. An early start in Portknockie so that I could be at the north face car park by 9:30am. We walked up the glen then started our ascent of Ben Nevis via Tower Ridge, which is seen here as the middle ridge mostly in shadow in the right of the image. This is a steep, very exposed and at times, tricky climb/scramble which tops out pretty much at the summit of the highest mountain in the UK. The climb is graded as a 3S which is the hardest scrambling grade and has a couple pitches of rock climbing graded as difficult. The complete ridge is total of around 600m and starts at around 650m. After summiting, we walked down via the Carn Mor Dearg Arête which affords stunning views of the Ben as seen in this image. A long, challenging and hugely rewarding day in absolutely stunning, perfect conditions.

The north face of Liathach in Torridon, Scotland. One of Scotland's most stunning and imposing mountains. I can't wait to climb it again but the next time I hope it will be covered in snow and ice! This is taken from the summit of Beinn Alligin.
