The Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum) is one of the UK’s most widespread dragonflies, often seen around ponds, lakes, and slow-moving rivers. Males are orange-red while females are yellow-brown, and both are known for perching tamely on the ground or posts between short hunting flights. Their long flight season, lasting into late autumn, makes them one of the last dragonflies to be spotted each year.
