I recall once on the church steps,
When I moved to kiss your chest,
How we paid such close attention
To each sweet and stuttered breath,
I should’ve stopped to paint our picture,
Captured honest pure affection,
Just to document the difference
between attraction and connection.
I can see all of my friends and
I break into empty buildings,
When the coast was clear,
With backpacks full of beer,
We’d throw our bottles from the rooftops
At this city-it looked endless.
Guess I still don’t see the difference
between real purpose and that urgent adolescence.
And I remember in a basement sharing sweat
With all these stranger boys and girls,
“We’ll change the world!” We sang,
“We’ll change the world!” But,
Nothing seems to change and
They say none of them will listen,
But I still see much more power in that basement
than in heartless politicians.
And if we get beaten by this winter,
If we get strangled by regret, just
Let our love of life and tension
Gasp in sweet and stuttered breaths, and
Have them lay us in a basement,
Smash some bottles on the ground, and
Say we couldn't tell the difference
between the feeling and the sound.
Remember not our faulty pieces,
Remember not our rusted parts,
It’s not the petty imperfections that define us but
The way we hold our hearts,
And the way we hold our heads,
I hope they write your names beside mine
on my gravestone when I’m dead.

I've seen signs of armadillos, and one in my yard several months back but this is the first one I've encountered walking in the woods. This was yesterday morning and it was alone. It tried to enter a hole by a stump, but when it found it wasn't getting far, turned around and came back out. Not too frightened of me but still apprehensive.
A walk around the Frank Gehry designed apartments as darkness falls. One of the chimneys from Battersea Power Station can be seen in the background.

Nine Arch Bridge, Ella, Sri Lanka.
This viaduct was built at Gotuwala between the two railway stations – Ella and Demodara during the British Colonial period is the largest in Sri Lanka. Located almost 3100 feet above the sea level, this 99.6ft high bridge is called “Ahas namaye palama” (Nine skies bridge) in Sinhala. When one stands underneath it and looks up there is a beautiful sight of ‘nine skies’ through the nine arches, hence the Sinhala name. This bridge is also called ‘The Bridge in the sky’ due to the sheer height.
This massive bridge is built entirely of solid rocks, bricks and cement without using a single piece of steel. The bridge was finally commissioned in 1921.

"The East Block (officially the Eastern Departmental Building; French: Édifice administratif de l'est) is one of the three buildings on Canada's Parliament Hill, in Ottawa, Ontario, containing offices for parliamentarians, as well as some preserved pre-Confederation spaces.
Built in the Victorian High Gothic style, the East Block is, along with the Library of Parliament, one of only two buildings on Parliament Hill to have survived mostly intact since original construction. Though not as renowned as the Centre Block of parliament, the East Block formerly appeared on the face of the Journey Series design of the Canadian hundred-dollar bill. The East Block is open to the public for tours in July and August.
Designed by Thomas Stent and Augustus Laver, the East Block is an asymmetrical structure built in the Victorian High Gothic style, with load bearing masonry walls— being nearly 0.9 m (3 ft) thick at the ground level, expanding to 2.1 m (7 ft) thick at the base of the main tower. These are all clad in a rustic Nepean sandstone exterior and dressed stone trim around windows and other edges, as well as displaying a multitude of stone carvings, including gargoyles, grotesques, and friezes, keeping with the style of the rest of the parliamentary complex.
This detail continues on the interior of the East Block, where emblems, such as wheat sheaves, were carved in stone originally to indicate the various government departments housed nearby. The level of quality and luxury of the offices initially indicated the status of the inhabitant: large, wood panelled chambers with marble fireplaces and richly decorated plaster ceilings served for ministers of the Crown; intricate, but somewhat less detailed cornices were sufficient for senior bureaucrats; and basic, machine-made woodwork and concrete fireplace mantles filled rooms set aside for clerks. Though much of the original decor has been retained or restored, the spaces have been reorganized so that the East Block now houses, as well as ministers, members of parliament, senators, and parliamentary administrators. Corridors and entranceways are also lit by windows filled with stained glass, and contemporary adaptations of the original gas fixtures adorn the walls. Beneath the decor stand 0.6 m (2 ft) wide, double-wythe masonry partitions with a rubble fill core, and concrete floors more than 0.3 m (1 ft) thick.
The main historic spaces in the East Block are restored to reflect the period around 1872. The former office of the Governor General of Canada contains its original furnishings, and the woodwork, fireplace, and plasterwork are finished as they would have been just a decade after Confederation. The office that had been occupied by Sir John A. Macdonald contains a blue-grey Arnprior marble mantle, and the Prime Minister's furniture occupies the room. The previous Queen's Privy Council for Canada chamber holds a reproduction of the original table made at Upper Canada Village, above which hangs the same chandelier that hung there before the Second World War.
Parliament Hill (French: Colline du Parlement), colloquially known as The Hill, is an area of Crown land on the southern bank of the Ottawa River that houses the Parliament of Canada in downtown Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It accommodates a suite of Gothic revival buildings whose architectural elements were chosen to evoke the history of parliamentary democracy. Parliament Hill attracts approximately three million visitors each year. The Parliamentary Protective Service is responsible for law enforcement on Parliament Hill and in the parliamentary precinct, while the National Capital Commission is responsible for maintaining the nine-hectare (22-acre) area of the grounds.
Development of the area, which in the 18th and early 19th centuries was the site of a military base, into a governmental precinct began in 1859 after Queen Victoria chose Ottawa as the capital of the Province of Canada. Following several extensions to the Parliament and departmental buildings, and a fire in 1916 that destroyed the Centre Block, Parliament Hill took on its present form with the completion of the Peace Tower in 1927. In 1976, the Parliament Buildings and the grounds of Parliament Hill were designated as National Historic Sites of Canada. Since 2002, an extensive $3 billion renovation-and-rehabilitation project has been underway throughout the precinct's buildings that is expected to be completed after 2028.

Late June to early July, 2024 I did my 4th major cycling tour. I cycled from Ottawa to London, Ontario on a convoluted route that passed by Niagara Falls. during this journey I cycled 1,876.26 km and took 21,413 photos. As with my other tours a major focus was old architecture.

My four, a friend's three and another friend's two. We went to a Dolly Rocket meet at another friend's.
This is a painting of nine birds that can be found in the Ottawa-Gatineau area. Actually it's not one painting but nine small paintings - a sort of triple triptych. My plan was to ensure that each canvas could exist as an independent painting of a goldfinch, northern flicker, robin, bluejay, nuthatch, redwing blackbird, cardinal, downy woodpecker, and chickadee. I think I succeded. This project began when I received a package of small canvases from one of my daughters for Christmas a couple of years ago. 'What should I do with them?' I asked myself. I remembered a digital image that I made of nine birds and felt that it might be great fun to reproduce it as an oil painting. The project took some thought and a little organization. I began by carefully screwing each blank canvas to a large piece of varnished plywood so that the individual canvases looked like one large canvas. While I wanted my painting to resemble my digital image, I made a few alterations - like creating a maple tree instead of an oak tree. I also took my time painting the illustration, occasionally putting it aside to work on other paintings and sketches. These pauses allowed me to return to the painting with fresh eyes. Altogether it took me about 44 hours to complete this oil painting - which is twice as long as it took me to complete my initial digital image. I confess that I liked the challenge. In future, I may be tempted to continue this idea by painting other birds, or waterfowl, or perennial flowers of my region in the same fashion.

Voici une peinture représentant neuf oiseaux de la région d'Ottawa-Gatineau. En réalité, il ne s'agit pas d'une seule peinture, mais de neuf petits tableaux – une sorte de triptyque triple. Mon objectif était que chaque toile puisse exister comme une peinture indépendante représentant un chardonneret élégant, un pic flamboyant, un rouge-gorge, un geai bleu, une sittelle, un carouge à épaulettes, un cardinal, un pic mineur et une mésange. Je crois que j'ai réussit. Ce projet a débuté il y a quelques années, lorsque j'ai reçu un paquet de petites toiles de l'une de mes filles pour Noël. « Qu'en faire ?» me suis-je demandé. Je me suis souvenu d'une image numérique de neuf oiseaux que j'avais réalisée et j'ai pensé qu'il serait amusant de la reproduire à l'huile. Ce projet a demandé réflexion et organisation. J'ai commencé par visser soigneusement chaque toile vierge sur un grand morceau de contreplaqué verni afin que les toiles individuelles ressemblent à une seule grande toile. Bien que je souhaitais que ma peinture ressemble à mon image numérique, j'ai apporté quelques modifications, comme créer un érable au lieu d'un chêne. J'ai également pris mon temps pour peindre l'illustration, la mettant parfois de côté pour travailler sur d'autres peintures et croquis. Ces pauses m'ont permis de revenir sur le tableau avec un regard neuf. Au total, il m'a fallu environ 44 heures pour réaliser cette huile, soit deux fois plus de temps que mon image numérique initiale. J'avoue que le défi m'a plu. À l'avenir, je serai peut-être tenté de poursuivre cette idée en peignant d'autres oiseaux, des oiseaux aquatiques ou des fleurs vivaces de ma région de la même manière.
