While the smell of sulphur was unpleasant, the feeling of the clean alpine air and crystal clear water was very welcoming after the heat of the previous summer day.

Though there were many frames that I did not like immediately after development, which led me to wait many months before trying to work with the roll, I liked this from the start. The placement of the rocks, as well as the mountains and the buildings, were exactly the type of composition I was hoping to work with using the Nikkor 28mm f2.8 AIS.

Why I did not use a tripod for the other photos on the 135mm lens, I can only point the the fact that I was with another person, and did not want to make them uncomfortable to wait. Not a mistake I will make again.

***

Though I am not exactly satisfied with my scanning quality, the lens sharpness, and the exposure itself, I really like how Ektar 100 renders greens.

Been a while since I have posted, but I will do my best to be more active again. Thinking of putting some stuff on Instagram also, which I have not done in many years.

[Tamagoyaki II]

This was taken during a tour of this tamagoyaki store in Tsukiji. The 28mm really shines in these compact, small environments. For better or worse, I decided to keep the camera very level, so that the ventilation would be visible and add a sense of perspective to the photograph.

When I stayed near Azabudai for a second time, I decided early on that I wanted to do some sort of brief photo walk around Roppongi during the daytime. My main idea was to photography Tokyo Tower with the Nikkor 135mm f3.5 AIS, but then I decided to use the 135mm for every photo. While it is only a brief collection of photographs, I will share them on here regardless. I have uploaded at a high resolution, so please feel free to zoom in on the photo, as there are many interesting elements that are included here.

It was hard to decide between a 1:2 crop and the 25.4x8.9 XPan look, but I decided on the longer panoramic look so that the focus would be on the street and lights rather than the predominant blank space around the subject. Cropping to this extent on a higher grain film definitely makes one envious of Hasselblad XPan users.

While I do not have the best scanning method as of yet, for close up, evenly exposed shots like this one, I have gotten good results. Ektar truly does look more like slide film when scanned or printed correctly.

For this one, I took several photos, as it was hard to decide which angle to shoot from. This is the first, and the one I decided to go with. The perspective of looking down the stairs while simultaneously drawn upward towards the tree branches was simply stunning. The light shafts shining on the stairs looked as if one was underneath the sea. Fuji Superia Xtra is a film I love to shoot with while traveling. It is not a perfect film by any means. It adds a touch of the imperfect that sometimes makes for great stories.

A 6x12 crop taken in Tsukiji, and the first of a set of three photographs taken at this corner. This photo focuses on maximizing the amount of signage. None of the pedestrians are facing the camera. All are either walking towards shops, inside of shops, or focusing on whatever they have purchased: food, clothing, jewelry, et cetera. And yet there remains a narrow open space, free of clutter. And the contrast between the clean sky and obscurity of the similarly narrow street and store fronts is clear. And what is to be said of this contrast? Namely, the disparity between how much the eye tastes of what is down, below, and low, and how little it looks to what is above, behind, horizontal, and vertical to itself.

A technically minded swan checks out photographer's Nikon camera.

Standing on top of the ropeway platform roof, we ran into another traveler who we had met earlier. Later that day, we would see him again on the train to Toyama-eki. It is fascinating when, coincidentally, I find myself on the same path as other people, going to the same place at the same time. When one goes to work, there are the same people, but it is not the same as being in a very out of the ordinary place, finding oneself among others who also have an objective.

***

XP2 really shows its high dynamic range in photos like this. I left the sky as is since I wanted the drama of shadow and light, but I could easily recover even the texture of the clouds, which is not present as is.

The Nikkor 28mm f2.8 AIS is horrible for shooting at infinity, but when used for close up, intimate shots like this, the results show for themselves how wonderful this lens is. The 3D pop keeps this 28mm on my camera more than any other lens, even if it sometimes feels like a one trick pony(Definitely not a reference to some Fuji MF rangefinders..)

Image captured at Tannehill SP in Alabama.

This is a restoration of one of the three blast furnaces built on Roupes Creek near a rich deposit of brown ore in the early 1860s. Iron from this furnace, and two others at this site, was used in the manufacturing of canons for the Confederacy. At the end of the Civil War, sites used to manufacture armament were destroyed by Federal forces.

This wheel & gear (or ones similar) drove a blower that supplied a large volume of air to the blast furnace just on the other side of the building. I assume it is likely the only part of the structure in this image that is original are the layers of rock foundation without concrete. History indicates that the orginal buildings at the Tannehill Ironworks were burned and the equipment destroyed or damaged beyond repair by Northern troops at the end of the Civil War.

The only story with this one is the intuition to release the shutter at this particular moment, from this particular perspective. There is a lot happening in the outer fringes of the photo, but I should like to think, and hope that the building has as much of a strong presence on whoever you are as it does on myself.

I took this by framing the shot, and then held it overhead to take it. The 28mm really adds a level of depth sometimes that the 35mm can not get across, and without the distortion of the 24mm.

On March 31, 1865 the Tannehill Ironworks was attacked by three companies of the 8th Iowa Calvary. Before leaving they torched all the factory buildings. It is interesting that only a mile downstream on Roupes Creek (modern maps refer to it as Mud Creek) another iron making facility, the Williams & Owens Forge, escaped detection by the same northern troops.
