Oh it's not a very "me" shot. Very dark and not enough colour. But I find that in spring, we very much focus on the colour of all the new growth, as that's what we've been craving through the dark, cold winter. Bluebells, primroses, blossom, daffodils etc etc.

But something about this majestical magnolia bud (maybe the light, maybe the rubbish green background) lent itself to something a bit darker. In my head, anyway. [Creative editing mainly due to analog efex.]

And I do have a fair number of other flower buds captured in colour to play with. Phew. Practising using a smaller aperture for a wider depth of field (hope that's the right way round!) to get more of the bud in focus, as well as controlling the image effects in camera (mainly sharpening, saturation and contrast) and lighting more consciously.

I love magnolias but always vowed I'd never buy one - because I'm so worried about the impact of frost and because they don't flower for long. But I bought one of these ("George Henry Kern") for my mum-in-law for mother's day, and it's growth habit and the additional details I discovered seemed to suggest it might work for me and my garden. So I chanced it and bought one for myself, too. It seems to be fairing well so far, especially compared to our neighbours' one in the front garden that always succumbs far too easily (and sadly) to frost.

Even though I've thought of Sprocket as a blue cat in her kittenhood, I've been unsure of that over the last few years as her fur took on a darker shade with brownish overtones in maturity. At least I can be certain this time.

This road seemingly goes off into a large expanse of nothingness and yet it beckons one to turn. I imagine a lovely homestead at its end with cattle dotting the landscape and wheat swaying in the breeze.

You guys. I am utterly in love with the wet plate presets in the Nik Collection. The whole plugin is now free to download from Google:

Yes, I'm still focused on simple and pure black & white... but damn if the sublime wet plate series isn't going to seduce me.

Innominate Tarn is a small tarn in the north of the Lake District National Park in England. It is situated at 520 metres above sea level, near the summit of Haystacks. The word Innominate means "without a name".

It was formerly known as Loaf Tarn.

The tarn is the location where Alfred Wainwright's ashes were scattered. He had expressed this wish in Fellwanderer: The Story behind the Guide Books:

"Every day that passes is a day less. That day will come when there is nothing left but memories. And afterwards, a last long resting place by the side of Innominate Tarn, on Haystacks, where the water gently laps the gravelly shore and the heather blooms and Pillar and Gable keep unfailing watch. A quiet place, a lonely place. I shall go to it, for the last time, and be carried: someone who knew me in life will take me and empty me out of a little box and leave me there alone. And if you, dear reader, should get a bit of grit in your boot as you are crossing Haystacks in the years to come, please treat it with respect. It might be me."

The sun begins its journey to setting behind the branches of a tree along the South Llano River in Junction, TX.

When I begun to process this exposure bracketing, I thought that I knew what I wanted to attain. I was perfectly wrong. Indeed, these RAW files kept a few secret bits of beauty which I was not aware of when I selected them for processing – and they changed the course of the journey I had foreordained.

I was in a gloomy mood, for both personal and general concerns, and the RAWs looked rather duller than the average – taken: they appeared to accurately mirror the state of my soul. At worst, I would have wasted some hours of pointless procesing work before deciding to look for something better. Nobody would have known. However things were to contradict my expectations. I got some good news (a rarity in those tough days) about the health conditions of my brother and my “adopted brother-in-law” (i.e. my brother’s brother-in-law); on the other hand, Darktable – that wonderful software – gifted me with a few unanticipated treasures. My thoughts were growing more and more positive and the processing of this bracketing were proceeding accordingly: a hidden beauty was unfolding before me, my own persisting unawareness of it notwithstanding. At last I found myself with a picture that had apparently self-processed itself*, while I was busy exploring uncharted thoughts that kept emerging along the way

* Admittedly a bizarre phenomenon, which Maurits Cornelius Escher would have loved – think of his Drawing hands.

I would avoid to nag you about this incredibly wonderful location: you can take a look at my album Silent banks, the complete collection of the photos I have taken there; the attached narratives are rich in information about the place, if you are curious enough.

This location is especially renowned for its legendary morning mists, but only a thin layer of milky mist floated above the water that morning. On top of the hill in the distance, beyond the river, lays the sanctuary of the Madonna della Rocca ( = Madonna of the Rock), already brushed by the first light pouring from the Eastern horizon.

I have obtained this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-1.7/0/+1.7 EV] by luminosity masks in the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal exposure" shot), then, as usual, I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4.

I tried the inverted RGB blue channel technique described by Boris Hajdukovic as a possible final contribution to the processing. While this technique (which, its imposing name notwithstanding, is pretty simple to implement) often holds interesting results in full daylight landscapes, its effects on a low-light capture (e.g. a sunrise) are utterly unpredictable, so at the end of my workflow I often give it a try to ascertain its possibilities. In this picture I have exploited this technique in a very frugal, yet effective, way – just some touches where needed.

RAW files has been processed with Darktable. Denoising with DFine 2 and the Gimp (denoised and original images blended by lightness).

Finally I got the shot I always wanted to take.

A tree can grow from the stump of a dead tree because the root system is still alive, drawing on stored nutrients to send up new sprouts. This is a common regeneration method for many deciduous trees and is a survival mechanism, though it can create a new, sometimes unstable, tree.

Very happy with the results from using Perceptol as the film developer. Was able to get almost no grain and high sharpness on my 35mm SLR. Great for printing large.

Mount Santubong, Sarawak.Borneo

Mount Santubong is a mountain in the Malaysian state of Sarawak and highest point of the city of Kuching. It is located on the Damai Peninsular, about 30 km north of the city center. There is a legend from the Malay people which states that two beautiful daughters of God, named Princess Santubong (Puteri Santubong) and Princess Sejenjang (Puteri Sejenjang) came down from heaven to guard their respective mountains here in Sarawak, namely Mount Santubong and Mount Sejenjang.

Princess Santubong was to weave clothes for the whole day, while Princess Sejenjang was to pound rice for the entire day. Each of them praised their own beauty every day and claimed to be the most beautiful woman in the world. They started to quarrel, and Princess Sejenjang hit the cheek of Princess Santubong using a rice pestle, thus causing the Mount Santubong to be broken on one side. Meanwhile, Princess Santubong retaliated by striking and penetrating the head of Princess Sejenjang with batang belidah (a bamboo stick used to weave clothes). Thus, Mount Sejenjang was broken into many surrounding small islands near Mount Santubong, including the Kera island.[5] In another version of the legend, Mount Serapi is included in which the two princesses were fighting over the handsome Prince Serapi and the heavenly king decided to curse each of them into a mountain.
