Vladimir I Sviatoslavich or Volodymyr I Sviatoslavych. (958 – 15 July 1015), nicknamed the Great, was Prince of Novgorod, Grand Prince of Kiev, and ruler of Kievan Rus' from 980 to 1015.

Vladimir's father was Prince Sviatoslav I of Kiev of the Rurik dynasty. After the death of his father in 972, Vladimir, who was then prince of Novgorod, was forced to flee to Scandinavia in 976 after his brother Yaropolk murdered his other brother Oleg of Drelinia, becoming the sole ruler of Rus'. In Sweden, with the help of his relative Ladejarl Håkon Sigurdsson, ruler of Norway, he assembled a Varangian army and reconquered Novgorod from Yaropolk. By 980, Vladimir had consolidated the Rus' realm to the Baltic Sea and had solidified the frontiers against incursions of Bulgarians, Baltic tribes and Eastern nomads. Originally a follower of Slavic paganism, Vladimir converted to Christianity in 988 and Christianized the Kievan Rus'. Due to this act, which fundamentally altered the historical trajectory of the Rus' and led to his declaration as a saint in both Western Christianity and the Eastern Orthodox Church, Vladimir is thus also known as Saint Vladimir. Some scholars prefer Volodimer I or Volodimir I.

A local landmark nicknamed the Castle in the Sydney suburb of Blakehurst. It was built in the late 1960s by an entrepreneur who started a supermarket chain. The main house is in the style of a grand English country house. It has been added onto over the years, in my opinion, not necessarily in a manner sympathetic to the architectural style of the house. The outdoor lighting was installed by the latest owner. The mansion is surrounded by more typical suburban houses.

Locally nicknamed "La dame de fer" (French for "Iron Lady"), it was constructed from 1887 to 1889 as the entrance to the 1889 World's Fair and was initially criticised by some of France's leading artists and intellectuals for its design, but it has become a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognisable structures in the world. The Eiffel Tower is the most-visited paid monument in the world; 6.91 million people ascended it in 2015.

Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, and often extended to refer to the clock and the clock tower. The tower is officially known as Elizabeth Tower, renamed to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2012; previously it was known simply as the Clock Tower. The tower holds the second largest four-faced chiming clock in the world (after Minneapolis City Hall). The tower was completed in 1859 and had its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009, during which celebratory events took place. The tower has become one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom and is often in the establishing shot of films set in London.

When it was unveiled in 1972, the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 became the first ever production car to feature a rear aerodynamic wing.

Goðafoss 20210719

Goðafoss Waterfall is nicknamed the “Waterfall of the Gods.” Some believe that the name comes from the fact that the waterfall is god-like in beauty. However, an old Icelandic legend tells the tale of the waterfall’s name through a Viking leader named Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði.

Þorgeir is said to have had thrown his Pagan statues into the waterfall, resulting in its name. No one knows the accurate story of the waterfall’s name but leaving it as a mystery might also play a part in keeping it mythic.

Goðafoss is one of Iceland’s true pearls and one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland. Its fed by the river Skjálfandafljót which runs in a 7000-year-old lava field from the Trölladyngja volcano.

Jaisalmer, nicknamed "The Golden city", is a town in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is located 575 kilometres west of the state capital Jaipur. It was once known as Jaisalmer state.

Jaisalmer is named after its founder Maharawal Jaisal Singh, a Rajput king in 1156 AD. "Jaisalmer" means "the Hill Fort of Jaisal". Jaisalmer is sometimes called the "Golden City of India" because the yellow sand and the yellow sandstone used in every architecture of the city gives a yellowish-golden tinge to the city and its surrounding area.

The town stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone, crowned by a fort, which contains the palace and several ornate Jain temples. Many of the houses and temples are finely sculptured. It lies in the heart of the Thar Desert (great Indian desert) and has a population of about 78,000. It is the administrative headquarters of Jaisalmer District.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, The Depot, Lyrisches, Wassily Kandinsky,

The Museum Boijman Van Beiningen's Depot is all about storing art and not so much displaying it. For some influential art works, an exeception was made. E.g. for ‘Lyrisches’ here. A neo-modernist building hosting a tribute to an early-modernist painting. Nice.

The painter Wassily Kandisnky was one of the founders of the Blaue Reiter (the blue rider) art movement. For the members, the countryside and its symbols were the only way to authenticity. The painting of the time with its neat and bourgeois conventions was frowned upon. The bourgeois art world in its turn, was not charitable towards the movement : ‘Hysterical daubs’, ‘crude intolerable outrages’ and ‘childish rubbish’ were some of the charcterizations used.

A ‘the established and the outsiders' thing….. Early modern music, e.g. Starvinsky’s ‘Le sacre du printemps’ was treated in a same way. It was nicknamed `the massacre of printemps', and called `a strange spectacle of laborious and puerile barbarism”. And orchestra members initially were opposed to playing it, they thought that the partiture was full of faults.

The quotes were used by historian Philipp Blom in his fabulous ‘The vertigo years’ (2008).

About Lyrisches: “With minimal means, a few striking lines and areas of color, Kandinsky captured this rider on horseback at full gallop. The canvas dates from 1911, Kandinsky's breaking point from realism to abstraction. Through the free use of shapes, colors and lines he wanted to achieve a synthesis of emotion and intellect. This made him one of the founders of abstract art.” Source: here.

“An Unfortunate Nickname”

Boyeeghter Bay or “Murder Hole” Beach, Melmore Head, County Donegal, Ireland

Please don’t be put off by its unpleasing nickname “The Murder Hole” because this beach is a true Irish gem. There are no paths, road nor signs and it requires a long hike through a grassy plain full of cattle, then over some large sand dunes to even reach. This has to be one of the most stunningly beautiful beaches you could ever set eyes on! It may have the most uninviting name you’ve ever heard off, but always remember you should “never judge a book by its cover”

As for its morbid nickname? I’ve asked countless people on why it has gained this name ‘The Murder Hole’ & have heard so many different tales ranging from World War 2 soldiers to The Great Famine to even a Murder Mystery hundreds of years old! I honestly still have no idea so if you have any information??? Please feel free to add it below as many folk would love to read about it

The Peperbus is the nickname of the tower of the Church of Our Lady. It is the highest church tower in Zwolle.

The tower of the Great or St. Michael's Church used to be the highest tower. The highest tower in the Netherlands, even higher than the Dom tower in Utrecht.

However, the St. Michael's Tower collapsed in 1669. Allegedly, one victim fell: a dog. In memory of this dog, there is still a facing brick on the building (bottom right of the photo): `t Hondje AD 1669.

Initially, the new Pesa Link railcars were the problem children of Kempten BW. The start of service in the Allgäu region was quite bumpy and frequent train cancellations were the order of the day. The strikingly styled vehicles have already been given nicknames. The respectful version is "shark", the disrespectful one "toilet seat". On 17 October 2021, I was able to photograph RE 57586 near Görwangs on its way to Kempten. The train was made up of the 633 037 and another vehicle of the type.

Mr. Monster is an adventurous traveler and explorer who recently found himself in Amsterdam, the city of the enemy football club. He was there for only a moment due to train problems, but he was mesmerized by the landscape of the river IJ at the back of the station. The cloudy sky and the vast expanse of water captivated him, and he took out his phone to read up on the history of the IJ. As he read, he learned that the IJ was once a shallow lake, but it was eventually transformed into a river by the Dutch in the 17th century. The river was used for transportation and trade, and it was also a source of inspiration for many Dutch painters. Mr. Monster was so enthralled by the history of the IJ that he almost forgot he was in the city of the enemy football club. But when he returned to the station, he was reminded of his beloved Feyenoord from Rotterdam when he saw many locals wearing Ajax shirts. He smiled to himself, thinking of the Dutch championship that Feyenoord had won. On the train he put in his earphones and listened with great pleasure to the very sensitive coversong Mariodona about his Feyenoord childhood hero Mario Been. Super Mario has many nicknames and is seen by many supporters in Rotterdam as the messiah of football in the Netherlands. To the sounds of Mariodona, the train slowly drove out of Amsterdam.

Croagh Patrick (Irish: Cruach Phádraig, meaning '(Saint) Patrick's stack'),nicknamed 'the Reek', is a mountain with a height of 764 m (2,507 ft) and an important site of pilgrimage in County Mayo, Ireland.

The mountain has a pyramid-shaped peak and overlooks Clew Bay, rising above the village of Murrisk, several miles from Westport. It has long been seen as a holy mountain. It was the focus of a prehistoric ritual landscape, and later became associated with Saint Patrick, who is said to have spent forty days fasting on the summit. There has been a church on the summit since the 5th century; the current church dates to the early 20th century. Croagh Patrick is climbed by thousands of pilgrims every year on Reek Sunday, the last Sunday in July, a custom which goes back to at least the Middle Ages.

Croagh Patrick is the fourth-highest mountain in the province of Connacht on the P600 listing after Mweelrea, Nephin and Barrclashcame. It is part of a longer east–west ridge; the lower westernmost peak is named Ben Goram.

'Croagh Patrick' comes from the Irish Cruach Phádraig meaning "(Saint) Patrick's stack". It is known locally as "the Reek", a Hiberno-English word for a "rick" or "stack". Previously it was known as Cruachán Aigle or Cruach Aigle, being mentioned by that name in medieval sources such as Cath Maige Tuired, Buile Shuibhne, The Metrical Dindshenchas, and the Annals of Ulster entry for the year 1113. Cruachán is simply a diminutive of cruach meaning "stack" or "peak". Aigle was an old name for the area. The Dindsenchas (lore of places) says that Aigle was a prince of Connacht who was slain by his uncle Cromderg in revenge for his slaying of a woman under Cromderg's care. It is also suggested that Aigle is an alternative form of aicil, "eagle".

The Marquess of Sligo, whose seat was nearby Westport House, bears the titles Baron Mount Eagle and Earl of Altamont ("high mount"), both deriving from Croagh Patrick.

Archaeologist Christiaan Corlett writes that the large number of prehistoric monuments surrounding and oriented towards Croagh Patrick "suggests that the mountain has been a local spiritual inspiration since at least the Neolithic, and during the Bronze Age became the focus of an extensive ritual landscape".

Professor Huxley (nickname: Mr. Bone), an award-winning palaeontologist, was puzzled. This morning, he had finally received the intercostal clavicle ("Why is it always this bone that arrives last?", he mused), the final piece and missing link that would complete his most ambitious project to date, the construction of a Quetzalcoatlus skeleton, the largest pterosaur of them all. After unpacking, he had carefully placed it on his work table, right next to the shrivelled daylily petal. Now both were gone. Did his fox terrier, George, steal it to bury it in the garden? Bones are bones, and dogs will be dogs, after all. Or did Susan play yet another prank on him? Or maybe George and Susan together. The two of them together were unpredictable. As much as he loved his wife for her unconventional ways and her devil-may-care attitude, sometimes he thought, "When will she grow up?"

As he looked for the shovel, ready to head out for yet another bone-digging spree in the garden, he heard a strange, rustling, crunching sound from his lab. "George!" he called. "Come here, you know you aren't allowed in the lab. Susan? Are you there, too?" The crunching and rustling got louder. It now reminded him of the sound the bones made when he put them together. And there was another sound... of ... wings? Wings that rustled like shrivelled petals. A slight panic set in as David headed for the lab door. When he opened it, he couldn't believe his eyes. The Quetzalcoatlus Hemerocallis was born.

This story casually continues "Bringing Up Baby", the 1938 prototype screwball comedy movie starring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Skippy (best known for his role "Asta"). I first watched this movie as a child, and I've always loved it. It's true, the standards for "acting animals" left a lot to be desired back then (well, the standards for the stars that were literally "owned" by the studios left a lot to be desired as well), but it's still an all-time classic with two of the best and most iconic actors ever. And it has Skippy, the fox terrier :)

So, what you see isn't the head of an accidentally created and mutated baby Quetzalcoatlus-Hemerocallis hybrid creature (who knows what its size will be once it's grown up?), but the completely dried pistil of a single lily petal. It's been on my photo table for a while, kept for a photo project (of course). When I arranged it on the black tile, the still brightly orange pollen/microsporangium went everywhere, and a few of them ended up on this unlikely creature's "face". Manual focusing with the Laowa 50mm Ultra Macro Lens proved to be difficult, so I mounted the extension tubes and the Nisi close-up lens on my 60 mm macro lens and benefited from its autofocus.

I did in-camera focus stacking, and this time, the in-camera stacked final JPG was good enough, so I didn't need to do "post-stacking" in Helicon Focus.

I'm busy today and will catch up with you tonight. HMM, Everyone!

A remote planet, Dathomir is drenched in blood-red light from its central star. The planet has continents overrun by twisted vegetation, with forests of bent trees burdened by large, cocoon-like fruit. Bordering dense swamplands is the massive stone fortresses of the Nightsisters, a witch clan.

Dathomir, nicknamed the "Rancor planet", was a remote, neutral planet in the Quelli sector and the home of the Nightsisters.

The planet, lit red by its central star, had numerous continents that were overrun with vegetation, forests, and swamplands. The dark side of the Force had an immensely strong presence on Dathomir, which allowed for the nurturing of many malevolent Force wielders native to the planet.

The Nightsisters, also known as the Dathomir witches, made their home in the swamps, and wielded magicks fueled by Dathomir's own power. Dathomir was also home to the Nightbrothers, Zabraks who were ruled by the Nightsisters.

During the Clone Wars, Dathomir would come under attack multiple times due to the machinations of Mother Talzin and her rival Darth Sidious, leading to the destruction of most of the Nightsisters and settlements on the planet by the Confederacy of Independent Systems after conquering it.

Asajj Ventress, a Nightsister trained by Count Dooku, returned to Mother Talzin after her master betrayed her. This drew Dooku's attention to Dathomir, resulting in the slaughter of the Nightsisters. This left Talzin, Ventress, Merrin and Shelish as the only known survivors.

In 2 BBY, Maul returned to Dathomir with the Jedi rebel Ezra Bridger to conduct a ritual that involved summoning the spirits of fallen Nightsisters in order to reveal fragments of a holocron vision.

As a result, Maul and Ezra learned that the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi held the key to destroying the Sith and that he resided on a planet with twin suns.

🇬🇧 The green basil lives in tropical forests, in trees, near water. In case of danger, it drops into the water and swims away. It swims very well, but more surprisingly, this animal is able to run on its two hind legs. It also seems to help itself by hitting the water with its tail, which creates a small wave that helps carry it across the water. It runs so fast, at 12 km/h, that it can even run on the surface of the water! It is this characteristic that has earned it its other nickname, the "Jesus Christ lizard".

The green basil is omnivorous, it feeds on small mammals, insects but also fruits.

Reproduction takes place from the age of 10 months. The male, like many iguanas, approaches the female by nodding his head before mating. A few weeks later, the female lays between 5 and 11 eggs, which are about 1 cm in size. The newborns weigh about two grams while the adults can reach 200 g.

🇮🇹 Il basilico verde vive nelle foreste tropicali, sugli alberi, vicino all'acqua.

After being a “big brother” to Nakai for the first year, he now enjoys playing with his new companion Keara. Micah is TALL, LANKY AND 100% BOY in water and mud. Kniphofia is a group of flowering plants that are part of the asphodelaceae botanical family, which is also home to aloe and eremurus plants! They are more commonly known as red hot poker plants, torch lilies, poker plants, or tritoma plants.

The kniphofia plant provides your garden with a brilliant display of brightly colored flower spikes. Their overall growth habit, shape, and colors, is what gives them the nickname “red hot poker” as they look like glowing torches!

On top of being exceptionally beautiful, kniphofia is awesomely easy to grow, unique looking, requires very low maintenance, and they attract beneficial pollinating species like hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies to your property! Read on to learn all about these torch lilies and what they have to offer.

Casa Milà, nicknamed, "La Pedrera" which translates to "the quarry house" is the last building architect Antoni Gaudí completed before devoted himself completely to the construction of the Sagrada Familia. This apartment building is located in the district Eixample of Barcelona, Spain and is one of the most famous and impressive buildings of the Modernisme. HWW!

Nicknamed Zebra. (South America)

The teddybear cholla in this garden are spectacular, particularly at sunrise and sunset, when their spines glow in the sun, but beware. The plant also has the nickname "jumping cholla", because the stems will break free and hitch a ride on anything they come into contact with....including your skin, and the spines are extraordinarily painful to extract. Welcome to Joshua Tree National Park!

Nicknamed "The Spice Bears," these 3 North American Black Bears, now 7 years old, were rescued from Alaska after their mother was lost in a human-wildlife conflict. Seen at the Greater Vancouver Zoo in Aldergrove, British Columbia. (24-02-16-0790)

Although called Black Bears, their colour can be various shades of brown, reddish-brown, black, or even white, as seen in the Kermode bear of coastal British Columbia.

The Elbphilharmonie popularly nicknamed Elphi is a concert hall in the HafenCity quarter of Hamburg, Germany, on the Grasbrook peninsula of the Elbe River.

The new glassy construction resembles a hoisted sail, water wave, iceberg or quartz crystal resting on top of an old brick warehouse (Kaispeicher A, built in 1963) near the historical Speicherstadt. The project is the result of a private initiative by the architect and real estate developer Alexander Gérard and his wife Jana Marko, an art historian, who commissioned the original design by the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, who developed and promoted the project (since 2003 in cooperation with the Hamburg-based real estate developer and investor Dieter Becken) for 3.5 years until the City of Hamburg decided to develop the project by itself. It is the key project of the new Hafencity development and the tallest inhabited building in Hamburg, with a final height of 108 metres (354 ft).

Puffins:-

Nicknamed “sea parrots” – and sometimes “clowns of the sea“! – Atlantic puffins have black and white feathers and a large parrot-like beak. They are small seabirds measuring around 25cm in length.

Puffins spend most of their lives out at sea, resting on the waves when not swimming. Their range spans the eastern coast of Canada and the United States to the western coast of Europe.

A puffin’s beak (or bill) changes colour during the year. In winter, the beak has a dull grey colour, but in spring it blooms with an outrageous orange! It’s thought that the bright colour helps puffins assess potential mates.

Puffins are carnivores and live off small fish such as herring, hake and sand eels.

Puffins are fab flyers, flapping their wings up to 400 times a minute and speeding through the air at up to 88km an hour. Wow!
