Aurora Borealis over Holmsberg Lighthouse, Keflavik, Iceland
WOW, WOW, WOW!!!
It's not often I start a post with the words Wow, Wow, Wow, however last night's aurora display was absolutely magical, so much so that I even filmed it on my Canon R5, which I have included in the first comment box below.
I arrived in Iceland yesterday afternoon, a day ahead of two photo workshops that I shall be running (the first which starts today) and I had an hour or two last night to drive around the Keflavik area (which is an airport town full of artificial lights which hamper shooting auroras). The clouds made an appearance, bringing with them a little light rain but when they cleared, I felt that there was a chance of perhaps seeing the northern lights.
I ventured out to the end of the peninsula to the iconic Garðskagaviti Lighthouse and the Garður Old Lighthouse but there were heavily visited by tourists also looking for the aurora so I left them to it and I then remembered a lovely little orange lighthouse that I visited around four years ago while scouting out the area for interesting subjects to shoot. So, I drove down the road, parked up the minibus and wandered over to the orange lighthouse.
It is quite boggy and marshland in places so while choosing my position carefully, I just happened to look up and WOW, the aurora was out in full force. You will rarely see me move quicker to get into position and set up (unless I happen to be in a coffee shop where a beautifully crafted latte and a piece of chocolate cake is on offer, lol) and within two minutes, I was shooting this scene. Geez, it felt great to be shooting the aurora again. I never lose the excitement in shooting the dancing green lights in the sky.
Anyhow, fingers crossed my twelve lovely clients on both upcoming workshops also get to experience the aurora for themselves because I know that they will be amazed, just like I always am.
I have just TWO PLACES LEFT on my October 2023 Iceland Photo Workshop for those who would love an opportunity to see the northern lights for themselves. Click the link below for details and/or to book your place :D

Landscape Photography Workshops & 1-2-1 Tuition
Taken on a three-day workshop that I ran last week in Dorset.
Arriving on the beach at Durdle Door in the middle of the afternoon during harsh light and pure blue skies have you stand and look around at what you can capture that might be even remotely interesting and unusual.
Then I spotted this lovely small cave-like indentation in the white chalky cliffs known as Bat's Head. What were the challenges in shooting from this viewpoint I hear you ask? lol.
Well, for starters, there's not much room in there and setting up a tripod is almost impossible. You certainly need a small travel tripod to even have a chance of setting it up. I had a huge tripod with me so I decided to shoot this scene handheld and furthermore I only needed to capture the scene once despite harsh contrast and a crazy depth of field issue. Saying that my Canon EOS R coped impeccably with the stabilisation of the image, the great depth of field leaving everything sharp to look at, from the rim of the cave to Durdle Door itself as well as the dynamic range coping with the varying degree of light.
The more I use the Canon EOS R, the more impressed I am with it.

We arrived in the car park in the dark at 6.10am and within five minutes it was full. In that instance you have to drive the 12km road out of Moraine back to the main road where there are marshalls manning the road junction. If the car park is full, you will not be allowed to enter and as cars vacate the car park and exit the main road, in goes the next car that is waiting, hence why it's so important to arrive very early.
However the views are well worth dragging your backside out of bed at 5am for, as I'm sure you will agree. On this particular morning, we benefited from some recent snow fall on the summits of Mount Little (3,088m), Mount Bowlen (3,072m), Tonsa Peak (3,057m), Mount Perren (3,051m), Mount Allen (3,310m) and Mount Tuzo (3,246m) left to right.

Come and join me on my Harris and Lewis Photography Workshop 2nd-8th March 2019 £1,395
melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/harris-lewis-sco...
After a difficult day with the camera due to plenty of mist, drizzle and grey skies, I decided to venture down on my own to a little beach close to the cottage where I am staying near Uig on Lewis and what a gem of a find it was.
Once parked, I walked no more than ten minutes to reach a completely secluded beach with the tide some distance out. The sand was untouched and the feeling of complete isolation was something that I have been craving for since stepping onto the island on Saturday. Not because I don't enjoy the company of my good friends because I do but I often shoot solo and it's simply what you get use to.
I spent some time on the beach and the adjoining rocks until I settled on this random lobster pot. I set up the camera and waited twenty minutes for the water to get to me but when it did, it was more than worth the wait. The secret to these short exposure images is to shoot plenty of them because you cannot control how the water hits the lobster pot or how it is going to form on camera.
All told I am really happy with this photo and I hope you like it too.

Isolated Cloud, Chiesetta di San Pierino, Tuscany
Captured last May during my week travelling around Tuscany without clients. It was wonderful to discover the same locations that I shoot in September (when I run my workshop) looking all green and lush with an abundance of flowers.
However this beautiful chapel (which is considered the 'little sister' to the iconic Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta) has ploughed fields surrounding it as it is located on a hill near the Camugliano estate. It was built in the mid 1400's.
Regarding the cloud, I waited patiently for a few minutes before one came along and made my day.

JOIN ME on my Five Day Northern Lights Iceland Workshop
15th - 20th October 2020
melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product-category/iceland...
I am finally home from an absolutely magical sixteen days in Iceland. I was shooting solo for the first eight days followed by leading a workshop for eight wonderful clients the remaining eight days with my good friend and award winning landscape photographer Tony Higginson.
This image of the hugely photogenic triangular emergency shelter in Iceland was photographed on my first night in Iceland. I had just captured an inspiring shot of the nearby iconic black and white Budir Church when I decided to make a detour en-route back to the guesthouse at midnight to this location.
It is located high up on a mountain pass which is affected by much heavier snowfall than the surrounding roads. Sadly I managed to ditch the car in a snowbank when parking up which rendered me immobile for nine hours until the recovery vehicle arrived meaning that I had a rather uncomfortable night in the car until 9am. The temperature was -11 and I can vouch that it was extremely cold. I ran the engine continuously from 3am onwards to keep me from freezing, literally. A vehicle did not pass me between 12.30am and 7am, this place is pretty remote.
Still, the things we do for our art. I will confess that the sunrise was lovely but it was the aurora that once again took my breath away. Standing on your own on top of a mountain pass with a volcano looming large over you in the dark is a sobering experience but one to be savoured. Mind you, I was less enthusiastic about hearing what I thought were footprints in the snow behind me prompting me to spin around with my head torch feverishly scanning the landscape for signs of life, be it human or animal. Nothing could be found but it certainly keeps you on your toes that's for sure.
Anyhow, I have so many many more photos to share with you over the coming fortnight but for now, I must finish my Powerpoint presentation that I will be delivering tomorrow morning at 11am on the Fotospeed paper stand at The Photography Show. Come along and heckle if you wish, I'm sure that you will not be alone.
Have a great Friday everyone

Another shot of the Cat Bell range this time taken a bit later with a glowing orange sunset. This was taken during a really foggy Saturday back in December 2017 at 15:47 just as the sun was setting. I really didn’t think I had captured that orange glow but, thankfully I had.

Misty Autumnal Sunrise, Bled, Slovenia
This week has been so memorable for light, mist and weather conditions and quite easily one of the most enjoyable weeks I have spent in Slovenia.
This morning I took my clients down to Bled to capture what I hoped would be misty conditions and boy did we get just that. Here is the iconic Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary on the island in the middle of the lake in Bled complete with Bled Castle in the background which came and went with the gorgeous rolling mist.
This afternoon, we have a couple of churches to visit with the weather continuing to impress although tomorrow onwards the temperatures drop by half as autumn properly kicks in (24°c down to 12°c with 2°c temps overnight).
Have a great day everyone

The family decided to take a break at Sleepy Hollow around 11AM and I'm not one to just sit around waiting on people to eat for extended periods. Of course what better place to stop if you want to get some shots of Cinderella Castle. The sun was still low enough to use it in the shot so I opted for the Nikon 14-24 2.8 and went really wide here. Enjoy.

Since the camera was in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) why not let it roam the alleys and streets and check out how COVID-19 is affecting the homeless, drugs users (and pushers), prostitutes and the area mentally handicapped residents.
This alley is looking surprisingly clean for the DTES. Typically it is littered with garbage and crowds of people selling and using drugs.

Permission to use photo.
.
Greetings Ted,
I am a priest and an outreach worker in the Downtown Eastside where I work have been working with street involved adults for 18 years now. Street Outreach Initiative is a small not-for-profit organization.
I contact you seeking permission to use three of your photographs.
They compellingly depict men and women, and their courage to keep going, amidst a community filled with challenges. They were taken on Gore St near the back of the Fire Hall Theatre. I found them using a google image search, with “commons use” selected. I then discovered they were posted on Flickr.
I write seeking permission to use these in a limited circulation print newsletter (not on the web) that provides updates on our work and the situation on the street.
Our organization seeks to serve our street involved brothers and sisters in a variety of ways, through trauma workshops, events focused on Indigenous Reconciliation, addiction counsel, memorial services (too many of them), work with refugees, pastoral care at end of life, and other things. We have an Indigenous Elder as well as a Clinical Counsellor on our Team.
Although I am a priest, and our work is based at St James Church in the DTES, and we provide among many things, pastoral care, our mission is to build relationships and to care for all. We are not religious proselytizers.
We would like to compensate you for use of each photo, and can offer seventy five dollars each. May we use your three photographs for this purpose?
Alas, we are approaching printing, it took a while for me to find an email address, so I’m sorry to make this ask with such a rush!
With every good wish

"The Dying Gladiator is a Roman copy of an ancient Greek statue, and one of the most celebrated icons to have survived from antiquity. It appears in famous gardens across the world, evoked and reproduced by sculptors and artists for several centuries.
The Dying Gladiator at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal mysteriously disappeared from the water garden in the late 1800s. But thanks to the generous support of visitors and the local community, we were able to raise £82,000 in 2018-19 to cast a new statue.
We worked with expert statue conservators, Rupert Harris Conservators, to cast the new piece. It was then painted white to match the other statuary in the water garden, reflecting how they all appeared in the 18th century. We also undertook archaeological surveys to determine the exact location of the original statue and discovered its original foundations.
You can see the Dying Gladiator next to Neptune, Bacchus and the Wrestlers alongside the moon ponds of the water garden, just as it did in the 18th century."

The next newsletter (it's free!) should find its way to your inbox soon! We'll have tidbits, news, and beautiful images as always. You will have a great time forwarding it to your friends and family... and, if you're one of those crazy email-forwardin-moms out there, well now you have one more thing to forward on to everyone on your list!
Daily Photo - A Lonely Prayer at the Crypt
The entire labyrinthian network of crypts in Beunos Aires was lonely and eerie. For a few moments, I thought I saw a ghostly nun floating between the marble and granite tombs. And then I came around a corner, and saw her deep in prayer. I hung back a little before snapping a quick photo.

Live Video Chat Thursday Evening in the USA
The video chat is tonight, Nov 19th! Come join us at tinychat.com/stuckincustoms. Everything begins officially at 7 PM CST (5 PM PST). I know we have people joining from ALL over the world. Sorry I don't have local times for everyone, but I know people around here are smart enough to do the addition in their heads, I hope! :)
I'll start it out with a little announcement that should be fun for everyone!
The Newsletter is Off
We sent off the free Newsletter yesterday. I notice that one of the previous newsletters was opened by over 200% of the people who were on the list! That means that most people forwarded it to at least one person. That's great. I always try to fill it with pretty pics... so they are the kinds of things that are fun to forward to people that like pretty pictures. And who doesn't like those?
Daily Photo - And then I hiked through the Autumn Trees to find the Glacier
I wasn't exactly hiking in the safest spot in the world, when I stopped to take this shot. But the tripod helped! I tend to use it like a hiking stick sometimes. I was hiking through a pretty area of southern Argentina in a bitter rainstorm. You can't see the rain here because I left the shutter open for so long, but you can see the heavy clouds, hanging just a bit over the Perito Moreno glacier.
