A flying visit to Lancaster over recent days to move my daughter's stuff into her new student house enabled a quick visit to the south lakes. However, it was a really wet and gloomy couple of days, certainly not ideal for photography.

 

This is Newby Bridge which spans the River Leven. The Leven flows out of the southern end of lake Windermere and enters Morecambe Bay eight miles later.

N Yorkshire.........The double herbaceous border-at 172m in length-is one of the longest in the country. With its north-south axis, the border holds the fine William & Mary house at the top, and slopes down to the River Ure at the bottom.

Ivatt 2MT 46441 departs from Newby Bridge with the 1050 train from Haverthwaite to Lakeside, on the opening weekend of services on the line.

Chris Beets Jubilee 45690 " Leander" passes under the road bridge on the approaches to Newby Bridge.

Great White Heron. Many species nest here on a little mangrove island protected from most predators.These newbies are all fluffy and top heavy looking with their beaks Venice Rookery FL

2085 nears Newby Bridge, with a 15:40 Haverthwaite-Lakeside service on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, back in 1982.

 

The LMS Fairburn locomotive was sporting a fictional Caledonian Railway blue livery at the time.

Illuminated by the afternoon sunshine are a row of trees on the banks of River Leven at Newby Bridge just south of Lake Windermere, 29th May 2015. The River Leven is only eight miles long and drains Lake Windermere from its southernmost point into the northern reaches of Morecambe Bay.

Last weekend we visited the gardens at Newby Hall - the furthest we've been so far, since lock-down. It's always a lovely garden to visit and well organised for social distancing - pre-booking is currently required.

Two rebuilt SD40-3's, a rebuilt SD60-3, and a reactivated SD40-2 wait to be picked up on the NRE transfer track at the west end of Silvis Yard. The CP Nitrin Job would eventually pull these on April 30th.
