Reading Buses - The Orange Routes liveried - Wright StreetDeck - SK66 HRR is seen here on Blackpool Promenade as a participant for the annual Bus Driver of the Year competition. Seen here on September 3rd 2016.

Newly opened on Canonmills Bridge is Earthy - a market shop with quaint tearoom and restaurant. What attracts you to Earthy is this black and white cow that stands at the entrance, opposite the Canonmills clock. It's proving popular as a stopping point for locals who wish to have a gossip, children who love to look up at it and dogs who see it as....well anyway I had a go trying to catch a picture with a bus and the cow together.

Anyone who knows this junction will also know this might not be the easiest of tasks to do, especially if you've to avoid all other traffic and pedestrians crossing in front of the cow.- is it a Friesian anyone?

After having two or three attempts I settled for this photo of new Volvo B9TL Wrightbus Eclipse Gemini 2 (SN11 ECA) number 369 working Service 23 between Trinity and Morningside.

ADL Enviro400H number 204 (LB61 BUS) leaves Western Harbour on a sunny afternoon and passes the new housing development at Platinum Point.

Platinum Point is developed on mostly reclaimed land in a massive project linked back to the removal of spoil heaps from the Ocean Terminal site between 1999-2002. Over 450 luxury flats are housed here in 7-14-storey buildings.

Enviro 204 was one of three hybrids brought to the special evening exhibition on Thursday the 9th of September for enthusiasts and Chris Cuthill was the star driver of this one as he purred into Eastfield terminus along with 203 and 204. I think we can allow Chris to call this his own bus from now on!

Lothian's fifteen new Enviro 400 Hybrid's have to work hard on Service 10 with a diagram going from Western Harbour, in Newhaven on the coast, almost continuously up hill until they finally reach this steep gradient before arriving at the very tucked away Torphin terminus.

The new Enviro 400's (the first by Edinburgh's principal bus operator) are cleaner, quieter and smoother than other buses. Hybrid buses are more efficient than ordinary buses because their engines run only to generate electricity which drives the wheels.

Now I am no technical expert but I understand that on the journey from Newhaven to Colinton and up here to Bonaly / Torphin the engines are working all the time to power up the battery. Much wheezing can be heard on the ascents, but on the return journey from here down into town and further down to Leith and Newhaven the engine is barely heard at all and to the casual passenger the buses appear to be free-wheeling!

I wonder therefore if it has been a deliberate plan to brand these vehicles to the 10 in order to test out the new technology. We'll see how they do.

Alexander Dennis, Enviro 400 Hybrid, number 205 (SN61 BBF) climbs the big hill at Torphin and note the driver has already changed the screen for the return journey to Western Harbour.

Sunday the 14th August felt a little bit different. The sun came out which was nice, but of greater significance was something missing on the streets of Edinburgh.

Moving around the Leith Walk, Meadowbank, London Road, York Place areas of the town it suddenly occurred to me that there were no Dennis Tridents about - and this is very much DT territory! I saw one actually on a 34 but not one other anywhere in several hours which gave me a most odd feeling.

Oh I know I've skirled and bemonaed the damned things for years - great herds of them roaming in every street corner....200 of them to be precise, but today an eerie absence. I muttered to myself that it was like the summer in 2009 when the gradual demise of the Alexander Royales grew faster with every week. The Tridents are going alright, but a virtual wipe out on a Sunday in August 2011 - this was something to make special note of.

And behold the new 381 at Sleigh Drive. The 25 is a bus one might not have even noticed for the last ten years or so such was the complete dominance on that route of Tridents between Riccarton and Restalrig. On Sunday though a full compliment of Gemini's, and nearly all 11-plates too. Seeing them approaching was like someone you know who is totally transformed from a scruffy, unwashed individual with dirty clothes and very much down at heel. Here now is the same being straight from the hairdresser, fresh and scrubbed, new shirt and tie with a smart suit on and shining shoes.

This is the NEW 25.

What a magnificent sight and I had to make myself concentrate on getting the photograph.

Descending Edinburgh's Mound here is one of Lothian's 11-plate registration Gemini B9's, number 351 - sixty buses were purchased in 2011 at a cost of £12 million.

Fifteen vehicles are based at each of Edinburgh's main depots:

351-365 at Central

366-380 at Longstone

381-400 at Marine

The twelve Morningside Maisie buses for Service 5 (951-960 and 399 & 400) are based at Marine depot.

The building on the right is the Church of Scotland's New College Assembly which was the temporary seat of Scottish government following the introduction of devolution for Scotland in 1999. Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSP's) would sit here until the award winning architectural masterpiece at Holyrood was completed.

It's perhaps a little amusing to note the banner promoting the Assembly as a venue for the Edinburgh International Festival - it's sponsored by Fosters lager. I wonder what the elders think of that!

One of sixty new buses, here is 362 and you're looking at the home of the photographer.

Madder red and white buses disappeared from Dundas Street in Edinburgh in 2008 when harlequined Gemini's took over from Alexander Royales and it is joyous to see scenes like this on both Services 23 and 27 again after a gap of three years.

The 23's stock is based at Longstone depot with the 27 at Central. Lothian have fifteen new Gemini 2 B9's at each: 351 to 365 at Central and 366 to 380 at Longstone. These thirty vehicles are therefore destined to become regular performers at this junction.

Henderson Row is designed by William Burn and built in 1825. The 'Buildings of Scotland' archive describe this street as 'plain, impressive tenements of main door and late Georgian town flats'. The main doors have attractive Ionian porches and note the fine Greek pediments above the windows on the south facing first floor.

The former police garage (opposite Perth Street) was designed by William Hamilton Beattie (also of Jenners and the Balmoral Hotel) and this was, in 1886, the depot for the Northern Cable

Tramway Company with vehicle entrance in Henderson Row itself. A wash house survived until the 1980's opposite Perth Street.

Today it's nice to be able to type up stories like this and observe 23's and 27's running up and down Dundas Street from my south facing windows, and once again we see Edinburgh's famous livery of over 100 years.

We mustn't forget also about the little Dart's that pass by the door on the 36.

At the foot of the Mound Volvo B9TL, Wrightbus Gemini2, number 377 (SN11ECX) picks up passengers alongside William Henry Playfair's grand masterpiece of the 1820's. Note the Doric columns and also one of the giant sphinxes on the top here - the woman's body with a lion's head.

There are 4 pairs of these on each corner of the building, by John Steel in 1836 and he also created the giant statue of the young Queen Victoria which stands at the north front of the building facing Hanover Street.

Most things go in cycles, and fashions usually come back round again eventually. I received a photo some years ago from my friend John Barclay, from Sunderland, which he took in August 1981 whilst on holiday in Edinburgh. It was a picture of Alexander Atlantean no. 374 in the evening of its life, working as a Longstone bus often on Service 23 between Trinity and Morningside - the proper Maisie route as depicted in Aileen Paterson's children's stories.

Today we have a new 3xx bus fleet and 366 to 380 operate from Longstone, again mostly on Service 23. I was therefore delighted to try and repeat the same scene from the summer of 1981 in 2011. This is North Bank Street at the top of the Mound alongside the former headquarters of the Bank of Scotland and here is the new Volvo B9TL, Wrightbus Gemini2 number 374 (SN11 ECT) working more or less the same 23 diagram as of olden days with a little extension beyond Morningside, through Napier University (former Craig House) and onto Greenbank/Glenlockhart.

As can be seen from the insert photo of John's Atlantean 374 (see below), the scene is little changed thirty years on and how nice to compare the two examples of bus 374 at the top of the Mound.

At the far end of the SVBM is the Lothian wing at Lathalmond and the sun always shines up here! Smiling faces all round for an exhibition of the great and the good, past and present.

We'll be back to do it all again in 2012 and I'd never want to miss this grand event.

I'd like to say thanks to everyone for the work that goes into making this week-end a success and such a happy one too, especially of course to all those owners who proudly show off their own vehicles for everyone to enjoy.

Shrubhill was the maintenance hub for Edinburgh Corporation's Transport Department and Lothian Region Transport until the 1990's. Laterly, a depot solely for bus use it was originally for trams whereby the building at the rear once housed the engine that drove the cables for part of Edinburgh's cable tramways.

Today the site still lies derelict and plans for offices and very tall residential flats were not approved and described as 'not good enough'. In the 2000's further plans were made for a hotel and this was approved in 2006 but as of 2011 nothing has materialised.

The ghosts of the old buses remain at Shrubhill and I remember being taken there in 1973 to the ECT open day where AN68 Atlantean number BFS 2L was on show for potential bus enthusiasts like me!

On this Sunday afternoon Volvo B9TL, number 353 (SN11 EAY) is seen on Leith Walk working for Services 16 and 27.

My first shot of new bus 395 and Service 19 has its own little claim to fame in that it's King's Road terminus is actually the depot itself at Marine and this can be a good place to catch the buses on that route, especially when an opportunity to also get a repaint like 793 here occurs alongside.

With the magnificence of Edinburgh's RSA and National galleries on the Mound Lothian's new Gemini B9 352 ascends the hill on its first week in service.

Note the grand Doric columns and Greek temple porticos on the gallery buildings with these Charlotte lanterns standing proudly - these lights were among the original pseudo-Georgian fittings which gained their name when first introduced in the 1950's in Charlotte Square, York Place and here on the Mound.
