This was my first visit to Powell's Bookstore in downtown Portland. Most people mention how well-organized it is (despite its huge size) but a feature I liked -- and hadn't heard about -- was that they mix new and used books on the same shelves.

I met Parker on a backpacking trip last weekend. He seemed to be a wise soul... and was both peaceful and thoughtful. He lives on a houseboat on the Columbia River near Portland, Oregon. He told me that he does "vision quest" work with adults. I caught this shot of him contemplating the sunset and lake while smoking his pipe.

Super excited to read Becky Albertalli's newest book. I LOVED Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda - re-read many times loved. So I'm just going to get into bed with a hot water bottle and start reading!

12/17/07 – Starting “Acacia” by David Anthony Durham tonight.
Very excited about this one. Even though I haven’t read anything by the author before. I discovered this book and the author totally by accident. While searching the internet for an insider leak of the release date for George RR Martin’s “A Dance With Dragons”, an interview with David popped up. I clicked it, because the snippet caught my eye. Of course the link took me to the beginning of the interview, so I started hitting page down scanning for the blurb. By the fourth question, I was really interested in what the author was saying, so I scrolled back up and read the whole thing.
Turns out David Anthony Durham is a historical fiction writer, and “Acacia” is his first venture into fantasy fiction. He chose to do this book, simply because he wanted to do it. The impression I got from the interview was he is a really good writer. Simply because if his earlier historical fiction wasn’t successful, his publisher would not have went forward with “Acacia”.
My hype built when I went to Amazon.com to check out the reviews, and there was a blog from David himself, talking about why he wrote “Acacia” and basically going more in depth into the details discussed in the interview I had just read. After being hard pressed to find constructive 1 star ratings (the “too many characters” & “too many pages” criticisms don’t really fly with me), and reading rave reviews (even from fans of David’s historical fiction), I was sold, and ordered the book.
Tonight I’m going to start it with high expectations, and the trepidations of an unknown author. Though something tells me this is going to be a great book, and by the time I finish it, I’ll be searching the internet for an insider leak of a release date for book 2.

A couple people, who shall remain anonymous (unless they choose otherwise), sent me an early Christmas gift. Some of that gift went toward boring but essential items (bills, gas, shampoo, etc.....) and a small portion of it went to the book store today. I can't remember the last time I bought myself one book, let alone two! My purchases were: The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman & The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer. (Who is, coincidentally, Neil's wife!)
I can't wait to sit down & start reading these later! Thank you, Anonymous, you truly made my holiday season a little brighter! :)
The library has storage space for 8 million volumes. But so far, only about 530.000 books are on the shelves. Not surprising, given the rather slim range of new arrivals - during my visit there were only 8 new books displayed, all of them religious volumes.
