I have been thinking a great deal about our brains and how our neural architecture might be in parallel with the development of our surrounding cities. It takes a great deal of nurturing to develop every aspect of our brains fully and help it to function better...what if we start thinking about our cities as brains and in a constant state of development. Like brains, we need to protect our cities, develop and enrich them and make sure that there is safety. Negative thoughts can have a really profound impact on our brains and our cities. Let's challenge ourselves to not let that happen. Let's not succumb to depression...let's make every positive interaction matter. We will not let national politics destroy us. We will build and rebuild and our own neural architecture will be one of optimism against all odds and our city architecture will be welcoming to all, no matter the race, religion, or sexual orientation.

Cortivermis Syndrome is a degenerative infection caused by the symbiotic parasite Cortivermis sanguinea, a filamentous organism that infiltrates neural and dermal tissues. Its name comes from Latin: cortex (brain) and vermis (worm). The pathogen’s life cycle centers around the cerebral cortex, where it intertwines with neural pathways, feeding on bioelectrical activity. Initial infection typically occurs through contact with contaminated organic material or aerosolized spores. Once inside the host, microscopic larvae migrate through the bloodstream and lodge in the capillary networks of the face and brain. Within 72 hours, the organism begins constructing a porous, coral-like bio-matrix across soft tissues — a structure that provides oxygen diffusion and electrical conductivity. This growth manifests externally as reddish lattice lesions, usually on one side of the face. By day 10, the infection reaches the frontal and temporal lobes. The parasite establishes a neural interface, effectively hijacking sensory inputs and emotional regulation. Victims report auditory distortions, metallic taste sensations, and heightened aggression. Advanced stages result in partial ossification of the parasite’s network — the “cortical shell” — where nerve signals are rerouted through foreign tissue, giving the illusion of dual consciousness. First recorded in 2143 CE after an outbreak in the Novaya Murmansk Research Zone, where a mycelial biofuel experiment went rogue. Over 300 researchers were quarantined; only 17 survived.

After watching a video by Paul Thomson on the new neural filters in Photoshop 2021, I decided to apply a depth-aware haze filter, to add a subtle cool mist effect to this image. On this morning there was no mist whatsoever so it's complete work of Photoshop on display here.

Could you tell this was the sorcery of Photoshop???

I think the results are fairly realistic. Ethically I'm not sure it's a good idea and I will not be using it much if at all going forward.

the ceiling was stone. ribs arched towards the center.

it was a structure of order, built over centuries.

below it, something new. a tangle of wire and steel.

it caught the light like a neuron, or a web.

two lights burned like stars inside the chaos.

the old stone held the new chaos. both were silent.

Of course, the Paris that I am photographing is the Paris of Kentucky–in the year 2025!

Under assignment, I am thinking of a post-Impressionist painting, Houses along a Road by French artist Paul Cézanne, while photographing Main Street this Christmas season in Paris, Kentucky. I decided to take my rather generic Christmas photo of Main Street shops and apply a Photoshop neural filter to the image in post-edit. That function gives an image the look of a painting artist of my choice. In this case, I chose the post-impressionist look of a Paul Cézanne painting. But this is no longer tack sharp and photo realistic. It is now painting-like. Surreal. Post-impressionistic. That makes me feel like I am cheating. I don't use this specific type of filter often, but I'm doing it for this week's Compositionally Challenged Group assignment. In my defense, it is important to play with Photoshop's various tools from time to time to be familiar with them. I suppose if I spread vaseline on a lens filter like in the old days and swished the chemicals around during film development, I would feel better about using those old methods to show images that are authentically mine rather than adjusting sliders on a software template. Know what I mean?

This was a decoration for the holidays on a table. I took this photo with my 90mm macro lens and then developed it in Photoshop. I took some time in creating an object around the reindeer and sleigh. Then I combined it with an artist’s style in neural filters. They take famous artists and their work and blend it with the photo for an amalgamation of photo and fine art!

Re-edited using Canon's "Neural network Upscaling Tool." I attempted an ambitious long-distance shot of a Runway 16L departure from Ukishima City Park during south wind operations. Even with the clear winter air, the distance was a real challenge. This ANA B787-8 (NH259 bound for Fukuoka) will soon make a left turn over central Tokyo, heading west across the archipelago.

“Have you noticed how Sheriff Pete smells?” Lucy said.

“I try not to,” Bud replied trying to be nonchalant.

“He smells like he fell into a perfume bottle,” she said.

“You don’t mean he’s….”

“No, of course not. Haven’t you noticed the way he’s hanging around Miss Jane with that silly looking on his face.”

“Oh, that.”

Lucy punched Bud lightly on the shoulder. “Yes, that!” she said.

Chitwood Bridge

I took this old B&W image, that I shot with an 8x10 camera back in the mid-90s, and ran it through some Photoshop. I cropped it and straightened it, and then used the Neural Colorizing filter.

Chitwood covered bridge is still there, I shot it not too long ago, but the old building has been gone for at least twenty years.

The small painting on the wall behind the girls is one by Vermeer.

Prue Stevenson is an artist who explores autistic pleasures, necessities and culture through repetitive and tactile processes that allow for experiences of sensory play, creating spaces and opportunities for downtime. Working with media including oil, ceramics, textiles, sculpture, installation and performance, Stevenson advocates for the identity, empowerment, and sensory awareness of the autistic community.

"Neural Perspective" in Little William Street is a ‘neural pathway’ drawing; a representation of the artist’s understanding of their brain. Where the pathways connect, there is a thought from the artist's perspective as a proud Autistic person, advocating for their access in society and celebrating the value of human diversities.

For Sliders Sunday is this highly processed view of the eucalyptus flowers and bees. I used one of the neural network filters and if gave a more orangey and flowing texture ontop of the red flowers.

I used the neural filter to colorize this HP5 b&w film, then edit some to fix where it messed up. Still, it only took a few minutes and I think the results are pretty amazing.

After tea, Grinelda shows Luna her latest neural implant. Luna was impressed by its intricacy. It was a stunning piece of technology, with circuitry woven into the hood like an finely made tapestry.

"This is incredible," Luna said, examining the implant closely. "What does it do?"

"It enhances my vision and hearing," Grinelda replied, "I can see and hear things that no one else can. It's like having superpowers!"

"What sorts of things can you see?" asked Luna, excitedly.

Grinelda smiled and closed her eyes. "Well, with this implant, I can see the molecular structure of objects. I can also see distant planets and hear the sounds of colours. If I focus, I can even see the aura of living beings."

Luna's eyes widened with amazement. "That's incredible! I've never heard of anything like it before. What kind of aura do I have?"

Grinelda chuckled. "Well, let me take a closer look." She closed her eyes again and concentrated for a few moments before opening them again. "You have a strong aura, Luna. It's bright and full of energy, with shades of blue and green."

Luna smiled. "That's amazing. I've always been interested in auras and energy fields. Do you think I could get an implant like yours?"

"Of course!" Grinelda replied. "I can take you to my favourite store. It is your birthday soon, isn’t it?”

I love the veins on display in maple leaves in the fall. A neural network? A cardiovascular system? A road map of London? Just fascinating...
