On the Sabbaths one could often see groups of men sitting together on park benches after synagogue services to discuss politics, current events or just plane gossip. The women would usually be on another bench right next to the one where the men were doing the same thing, but discussing different subject matters.

In a country where people change their tires between the summer and winter seasons it is hard to tell if these were actually abandoned or just left to be picked up later to be stored before they are to be given renewed purpose. Life. Well, in the meantime they made a perfect subject to my creative eye.

What are the stories these old mikes would tell? This was taken in a small antique store on Queen street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They don't sell these mikes, but rather rent them for film and advertising shoots. The store owner allowed me to shoot this series in the store.

Foreshadowing of an era gone by.
Oil has been depleted and replaced by other forms of energy that are more environmentally sound.
Nature's reclaiming of the Earth is visible everywhere. Ancient structures and relics of abandoned gas stations and vehicles are still littering the soon to be pristine countryside. Humans hiding from view are awaiting clean-up operations, which have been too busy since the Great War.
A lucky shot? Obviously. Aren't they all? As I was looking at this image I was debating with myself as to what it was that intrigued me about it. The obvious voyeuristic element that prompted the first caption "Summer tan. Who needs stockings." was my cop-out approach to trying to understand what I was really feeling about this image. Why was I so intrigued with the subject being so obviously off centre? Or is it the subject at all. Maybe the young tree that needs support in order to survive and grow in this city of harsh weather systems. Maybe what I am saying here is that we don't get to see a bare leg that is so shapely and tanned because of our 9 months of winter here in Montreal. All questions to ponder upon. I don’t think I need to give answers. I don’t think I can. I just hope that an audience, in viewing this image, will be as intrigued and allow it to transport them to their own perceptual conclusions.

Shot during the festival Mode Montreal.
The event was actually outdoors on the street in Montreal. This performer was on the street level. Behind her you can see the horizontal edge of the runway where the fashion show took place.

EXPLORE # 21
SHIELD BUG ~ Pentatomoidea is a superfamily of insects in the Heteroptera suborder of the Hemiptera order, which are commonly referred to as shield bugs or stink bugs. Shield bugs have glands in their thorax between the first and second pair of legs which produce a foul smelling liquid. This liquid is used defensively to deter potential predators and is sometimes released when the bugs are handled carelessly. The distinctive smell comes from aldehydes such as CH3–(CH2)2–CH=CH–CHO, and is chemically similar to pheromones.
The nymphs, similar to adults except smaller and without wings, also have stink glands.
The nymphs and adults have piercing mouthparts which most use to suck sap from plants, although some eat other insects. When they group in large numbers they can become significant pests.
Shield bugs come in many colors.

The internet has offered creative artists around the world a platform to share new work and ideas with other like-minded individuals. To generalize, artists are typically loners with few examples of community. The internet has changed that for me and many other artists. The internet offers community, collaboration and education for people who may not feel comfortable in a group setting. I have learned and shared a lot of good work in the last five years, this would not have happened if the internet was limited to large companies serving their own agenda.
I have been blessed to show my work in places that may not have found small-town me if not for a free and open internet. Here's the giant beach... I'm the grain of sand they found. I have found many gifted visuals from around the world with a laptop and a connection.
This gave a shy artist from a small town - Community, that would be unable to contain the many creatives who populate my favorite works. To say the internet has changed my life as a creative would be an understatement.
Net Neutrality celebrates the creative potential of the independent individual... nothing more "American" than that.

I was walking along a street on "The Plateau" in Montreal, when I arrived at a clearing. An empty lot where a building once stood. It was now protected and sectioned off with huge cement pylons to prevent squatters from settling as well as avoid the litter of abandoned cars. The little girl was startled by my sudden appearance from behind the wall she was being protected by. I caught her in that state of surprise.
This area of Montreal was at one time run down. It was considered slummy. Today it has become a hub of trendy shops restaurants and "nouveau riche" condominium dwellers.

Where is this great love of books coming from? God knows I was never much of a reader. I could never get through a novel. I have started many, but have completed few. The reward at the end would never be sufficient to make me give up so many other things I would rather do with my time. In fact I prefer to read so many other things other than novels. So where is this love for books coming from? Perhaps it is an appreciation for the design of the books. The ability for words to combine with images completing a concept or an idea. For words to convey so much in poetry, philosophy, commentary, discourse, and of course art. I have also learned to appreciate the design and structure of books. I have always had great respect for books and the words in them. Wisdom imparted by men and women far wiser than me. Books that define art, music, religion. It doesn’t matter to me what the books are about, just that they are books and therefore are sacred.
In this series of photographs, I have found a selection of vintage books some dating back to the late eighteen hundreds, making them, actually from two centuries ago. Intrigued by the inherent physical structure of these books and the way they convey the by gone eras from which they belong, strictly due to their construction and design.

Typical view of a side street on the Plateau Montreal. I wanted to compose this image so as to capture a time in history. The satellite dish dates it more or less to the early part of the 21st century. One day historians will look back and witness the mix of technology from the structure of these old stairs to the building style, the "Dépanneur" sign, the telephone and electric wiring, bicycles and the satellite dish. All captured on a digital camera.

Where else but Le Plateau Montréal can you walk through a back alley and see a red painted brick wall and aqua green window ledge. This was a back wall behind a store that belonged to my parents. I had wanted to revisit and see how the area changed over the years. There was no graffiti on it yet so it looked very red and very striking.

She was sitting on her front porch looking onto the other two girls who were playing a game. I was struck by her sadness and her pose. The feeling of exclusion was so familiar to me. It was a time for reflection and character forming. A time for building confidence and strength.
