Nottingham Express Transit (NET) has 22 of these Alstom Citadis 302 trams, numbered 216-237.
They were obtained when the tramway was being extended by adding routes to Clifton (Line 2) and Toton Lane (Line 3) in 2015. They were built at Alstom's factory in Barcelona, Spain, in 2013-2014. 220 was delivered to Nottingham on November 27th 2013. All 22 of them were in use well before the opening of the new routes.
NET's two types of tram work as a common fleet.
NET 220 is at the Old Market Square stop, the busiest stop on the system, heading south to Clifton South. This viewpoint, especially with a southbound tram rather than a northbound one, makes for a classic picture of Nottingham. The 1929-built City Hall - known to all locals as "The Council House" - forms the background. The dome rises to 200' and houses the bell known as Little John. "The Square" is always busy and so one needs patience to wait for no pedestrians in the way when attempting a picture like this!
All the NET trams are named after people who are or were connected with Nottingham. Some are well-known nationally or internationally; some are modest people who have made significant local impact.
NET 220 is named Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff.
Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff CBE CChem FRS FREng FRSC FIChemE was born in London to a British-Jewish mother and a Russian-Jewish father. He is a British chemist and is a research professor in chemistry at the University of Nottingham.
"The best way to predict our future is to invent it."
(Alan Kay 1971)
Open Sailing aims to design and invent future lifestyles to overcome any possible natural and manmade disasters stimulating people’s ingenuity and sense of solidarity. Might it be global warming or energy conflicts, we are living in a time where we are sniffing the ‘Apocalypse’, finally realising our human part of responsibility as the earth is crumbling. 2012 is a year when a collection of apocalyptic events are rumored to happen. We are taking 2012 as an ideal dystopic symbol we design for. 2012 is tomorrow, we must design quickly using these constraints and invent bootstrapping DIY technologies.
Open Sailing method is to convert apocalyptic threats into design constraints. From our compiled set of threat maps, we found that oceans are the safest locations. Ocean survival architecture became our new starting point, but we need to go further than surviving : how can we live together in this new fluid configuration and remain a hyper-connected intelligent social being? We are trying to make a truly “open architecture” : pre-broken, under-defined, reconfigurable, moveable, pluggable, organic, fluid. Can we reach a harmonious dynamic state of interdependence with each other and the earth? Is this the next step of civilization progress? Will we dissociate our concept of progress with infrastructure and metropolis?

My impression of Oxfords Fossil Fuel Free Zone.
While living a car-free lifestyle may not be possible for everybody, try substituting car trips with bike rides, bus trips, train rides, or other forms of public transportation. When you drive, cut back on fossil fuel emissions by accelerating slowly and using the air conditioning sparingly. Check your tire pressure for better fuel economy, carpool when possible, and consider purchasing a hybrid or electric vehicle if you want a new car.
