Three historic neon signs from the Boston area, currently on display on the Rose Kennedy Greenway:
Flying Yankee Restaurant, from Auburn, from 1953 until 1990 (ish?)
The Cycle Center, which was on Rt 9 in Natick from 1956 until 1997
Fontaine's Restaurant, VFW Parkway, West Roxbry, from 1952-2004. Referred to as "the masturbating chicken" by my oh-so-mature friends and I.
I will go back and shoot in color at some point.
Back in 2006 when we were researching for our Roadside Attractions book, we looked around the Stockyard City district of Oklahoma City.
Joe's Tavern In Chelsea has not been open in over 20 years but we love that this #vintage #neonsign has survived. It is surprising because this part of western Chelsea near the High Line has become very gentrified and many old buildings like this one have met the wrecking ball to become expensive glass condos. Not only do we hope this #neon survives but we also hope that this old brick tenement building with its peeling paint lives on. #signgeeks #ipulledoverforthis #signcollective #tv_retrotype #jj_texture #ig_signage #jj_texttypographical #gas_food_lodging #everything_signage #signofgrime #trb_ipoft_signs #80sixd

The Cafeteria sign and Orders to Go look like from the 1930's or '40's and might be contemporary with the Hecht Company warehouse accross the street
Pop's Dairy Bar is the current name. The Dairy Bar is what it used to be called and this small space you see pictured, is the entire footprint of the business. The heritage value, is, amazingly enough, in the neon sign above the front window on McDonald Ave in Ramsay.
Obviously some renos over the years have been done on the exterior and possibly interior of the entire building which has about 3 or 4 businesses in it. A really nice historical design on this building though for sure!
See below for a bit of history
The Dairy Bar Sign has served as a treasured landmark to the local community, Calgarians and visitors for over five decades.
The Dairy Bar Sign is a reminder of the former confectioneries and dairy bars which, from the early 1940's, served as a leisure destination for the community, Sunshine Auto Camp patrons and Stampede visitors.
The neon sign was fabricated circa 1957, at the peak of neon sign production in Calgary. However, few illuminated signs from this period remain in the city, and it is the only known early neon sign in Ramsay.
All the these photographs are the property of the talented photographers listed and linked below. I hope you take the time to explore their photostreams because they are chock full of incredible photos. Enjoy.
