Hiding right in front of us is a world we cannot see. Humans evolved to see light, but only a small portion of it that is useful for our daily lives. There is more to be seen beyond this limitation, including patterns in flowers that are invisible to us. Thankfully we have the technology to break down these barriers and explore a world only seen by pollinators.
Many insects can see into the ultraviolet, and some flowers take advantage of this by creating patterns that can only be seen in these otherworldly spectra. Take these Black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta) for example. We know these flowers to have a black center and solid yellow petals, but there is a special trait that we would never have noticed without the aid of technology: almost half of every petal absorbs ultraviolet light, while the rest reflects nearly all of that spectrum. This creates a very large, UV-dark target that bees (and other observant pollinators) can see.
To be fair, it’s impossible to know how a bee might perceive such information – they see more than just UV light, and we cannot comprehend exactly how their compound eye vision interprets information in general. That said, these flowers evolved to take advantage of their pollinator’s ability to see shorter wavelengths of light – or maybe the pollinators evolved to see these patterns? It’s a “chicken and egg” scenario. I know that certain cultivars of the genus Rudbeckia have a dark ring that is visible to our own eyes, and I’ve always wondered if this was caused by selective breeding of specimens that had a genetic mutation that shifted the UV pattern into the visible spectrum. A botanist might know the answer!
To create this image, I used a camera modified for “full spectrum” photography. Camera sensors are natively sensitive to light from roughly 300nm through 1000nm, but human vision is limited to only 400nm-700nm. This means that for a camera to properly depict the world as we see it, filters are added to limit the sensitivity range to that of our own eyes. These filters can be removed by trained professionals (don’t try it yourself!), and a camera can then be outfitted with filters to limit the spectral range to something different – including infrared and ultraviolet.
The problem with photographing UV light directly has two primary components: filters and lenses. You’ll want a filter that blocks 100% of visible AND infrared light. If even 1% of the infrared light sneaks through, it’ll equal to all of the UV light that the sensor can detect and wash out your image. The best filters on the market are from maxmax.com – the XNite 330C coupled with the XNite BP1. The two filters combined are the absolute best option. You’ll also want a lens designed for the task; I used a Rayfact 105mm F/4.5 lens which is the successor to the UV-Nikkor lens of identical specifications. This lens is made of quartz optics that allow for better ultraviolet transmission. Such lenses and filters are NOT inexpensive, but there are some options for you to consider at a fraction of the cost. I’ve bought from this eBay seller before, and I can attest that this setup works quite well to start out: www.ebay.com/itm/273863933139 - it’ll cost you more to get a camera converted to full-spectrum that it will for the lens and filters!
The camera I had converted was a Lumix S1. Fantastic camera to do this with, especially when I’ve had some documentary work requiring high-quality video in unusual wavelengths. With the high-resolution mode, I was able to shoot this image at a greater distance and crop in, negating the need for any focus stacking efforts.
If you’d like to learn more about UV reflectance photography, you can check out my new book on macro photography: skycrystals.ca/product/pre-order-macro-photography-the-un... - a 384 page book with nearly 90,000 words of photographic instruction. While more time and attention is given to UV fluorescence photography, there is still value in exploring the capture of ultraviolet light directly.
Excerpt from the plaque:
In order to blend into their surroundings, soldiers have traditionally worn camouflage-often a pattern of earth-toned colours that will help them hide amidst dirt and trees. It is ironic, then, that camouflage patterns are also highly recognizable thanks to their strong association with the armed forces. This apparent contradiction fascinated Warhol, who was interested more broadly in brands and logos. In this series of colourful reworkings, he conspicuously negates the function of camouflage. In one of the panels, the pattern becomes mock-patriotic in red, white, and blue, offering a wry commentary on the militaristic aspects of American society during the Cold War.
Male parental care is quite rare in nature, but a variety of frogs throughout the tropics show instances where the father transports the young on his back. In most cases this involves carrying either eggs or tadpoles, but in a few New Guinean species, such as this Sphenophryne cornuta, actual froglets ride in piggyback fashion. A member of the Microhylidae, these frogs have direct-development larvae which means that the tadpoles morph into tiny frogs before leaving the egg, an adaptation enabling them to negate the need for a pool of water. The froglets will hitch a ride on the back of their father for several days before being dispersed in the rainforest understory. Digul River, South Papua, Indonesia (New Guinea)

Wow. I really need to start editing earlier... uploading at four in the morning kind of sucks.
Also, today was pretty nice. It started out kind of rocky (thanks, crazy mood swings) but at the end of the day, it's nice to know that there's always going to be people out there who really love and care about you. You can't let the people who don't negate the people who do.
Ps- I had my makeup all nice and pretty but then I started to smear my lipstick across my face because I thought it would work for the photo. I ended up not liking it and tried to fix it, but apparently I didn't get it all off my face, hence that little red spot near my mouth. Just sayin'. Didn't want you guys thinking I didn't know how to put on lipstick. Y'know, gotta make sure you guys know the important stuff.

I came here midway down the Felixstowe branch today in the hope of this usually Mondays Only service sporting a trio of locos, but it wasn't to be, as the extra loco was used to double head the following service from Ipswich, 4L91, instead. In good news it did coincide with a good spell of sun and a new vantage point has sprung up in the adjacent field providing sufficient elevation to see over the lineside hedge with a very large mound of sand negating the need for a pole! In the distance by the foot crossing is DC who was kind enough to provide the transport here.
The term "Gateless Gate" is well-known in Zen practice; it's the name of a collection of basic koans that all students in the Rinzai tradition (as well as the Korean-based Kwan Um School of Zen) will work on. ("Does a dog have Buddha Nature? NO!!" -- this is the famous MU! koan. [Clue: "No" is not really the "answer," or correct response to this koan. It has nothing to do with affirmation or negation of the dog's true nature.])
So, in the fashion of a Zen teacher, I ask you: Do these Ravens have Buddha Nature?
With thanks to Distressed Jewell for the birds.
Time after time those fanatical minds try to rule all the world
Telling us all it's them who's in charge of it all
I've got a tricked out magic stick that will make them all fall
We've got the power now, motherfuckers; that's where it belongs.
"And rightly so, for all that comes to be
Deserves to perish wretchedly;
'Twere better nothing would begin.
Thus everything that your terms, sin,
Destruction, evil represent—
That is my proper element."

March 8 - International Women's Day (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Women%27s_Day)
And although this Holiday has been recognized by the UN since 1975, it is not celebrated in all countries.
This circumstance, of course, does not negate the desire to congratulate all female photographers and, of course, female viewers on this wonderful holiday.
And in a separate line - congratulate femaile members of the group “We are from Yafa” (www.flickr.com/groups/escaped_from_yafa/).
One can meditate or speculate indefinitely on transcendent truths and their applications (that is moreover what the author of this book does, but he has valid reasons for doing it, nor does he do it for himself). One can spend a whole lifetime speculating on the suprasensorial and the transcendent, but all that matters is the "leap into the void" which is the fixation of spirit and soul in an unthinkable dimension of the Real; this leap, which cuts short-and completes in itself the endless chain of formulations, depends on a direct understanding and on a grace, not on having reached a certain phase in the unfolding of the doctrine, for this unfolding, we repeat, has logically no end.
This "leap into the void" we can call "faith"; it is the negation of this reality that is the source of all philosophy of the type that may be described as "art for art's sake", and of all thought that believes it can attain to an absolute contact with Reality by means of analyses, syntheses, arrangements, filtrations, and polishings - thought that is mundane by the very fact of this ignorance and because it is a vicious circle which not merely provides no escape from illusion, but even reinforces it through the lure of a progressive knowledge which in fact is inexistent.
In view of the harm that the prejudices and tendencies of ordinary piety can sometimes do to metaphysical speculations, we might be tempted to conclude that piety should be abandoned on the threshold of pure knowledge, but this would be a false and highly pernicious conclusion; in reality, piety, or faith, must never be absent from the soul, but it is only too clear that it must be on a level with the truths that it accompanies, which implies that such an extension is perfectly in its nature, as is proved by the Vedantic hymns, to take just one particularly conclusive example ...
The sense of the sacred: this word felicitously expresses a dimension which should never be absent either in metaphysical thought or in everyday life; it is this which gives birth to the liturgies, and without it there is no faith. The sense of the sacred, with its concomitances of dignity, incorruptibility, patience, and generosity is the key to integral faith and to the supernatural virtues which are inherent in it.

Stalking around the outside of the house, free-hand photographing jumping spiders with a home made macro lens that negates the image stabilization in my bridge camera is exhausting. Sometimes it feels like I'm holding my breath for minutes at a time as I try to steady my shot while hoping the spider won't move. This cute little fellow made it worthwhile though. My neighbors probably think i'm insane....

The name Bangladesh means "Country of Bengal" in the official Bengali language. Bangladesh is a sovereign state located in South Asia. It is bordered by India on all sides except for a small border with Burma(Myanmar) to the far southeast and by the Bay of Bengal to the south.
Bangladesh is a country of intriguing natural and cultural wonders, yet it remains largely undiscovered by tourists. Most of the general assumptions we have about Bangladesh are quickly negated by leaving its densely populated cities in search of small villages. Bangladesh sits on the largest river delta in the world, something belied by the verdant hills and valleys of its tea-growing regions. Its population is 98 percent Bengali, but visit some traditional tribal villages and you experience the cultures of the other 2 percent. It is a predominantly Muslim nation, yet there are Hindu,Buddhist relics to discover in ancient villages.
I am challenging to the world, we are still having the world number one hospitality in our villages without any of benefit. I am proudly inviting to you please visit Bangladesh .The world longest sea beach Cox’s Bazar and The world largest mangroves forest Sundarbans are here in our lovely country.
Took this one during a Tchiloli presentation in the african island of São Tomé. The most obvious cultural expression of the amalgamation of peoples on São Tomé e Príncipe can be found in the island's recreation of the Portuguese play «The Tragedy of the Marquis of Mantua and the Emperor Charlemagne». Written in the 16th century by the blind Madeiran poet Baltazar Dias, the play now exists in various adaptations in the Santomean socio-cultural environment; in Creole it takes on the title Tchiloli. The most distinctive aspect of the play is the stark contrasts that it elicits. The male actors narrate the Renaissance text while being dressed in European women’s clothing and wearing unique masks. The whole highly charged experience is an extravagant spectacle of music and dance, becoming what many describe as a symbolic meeting between African and European heritage. As well as enacting the play every year within the country, Tchiloli groups perform at local festivals both in Sao Tome and Principe and abroad.
There have been many attempts to classify and analyze the Tchiloli. As Angela Barros states in an article in BUALA, «Tchiloli, ‘is an example of the strength of the popular imagination and has found a solution in which the African cultural heritage has not been negated and other influences have been assimilated to create a spectacle with real African roots»

For some years now my daughter has been studying Materials Science. For a long time I thought this had something to do with knitting or weaving. It transpires that’s not the case :(
As far as I can tell the subject is to do with the discovery of novel “stuff” to make devices like phones better… or aero engines hotter for that matter. To my consternation I found out my daughter was more involved in the latter. I think, secretly, I had wished for knitting after all :)
And why? “I like looking at pretty pictures!” she says. So far, so like me.
Except she tends to use very expensive particle cameras that use quantum mechanics to work. So not so far after all - a long way from the humble Nikcanons types that we all have in our bags.
The pictures are still pretty though :)
Part of my confusion about the subject is that my daughter is, in fact, rather good at knitting too. My mother always used a printed pattern for hers, but my daughter invents the pattern in her head and follows that. It works. I find that quite remarkable. Mind you, having tried the process, I am always impressed by anyone who can produce a garment with two knitting needles however they do it - it’s way beyond me as I have proved to myself.
So all this preamble is to explain this image of her work: not knitting this time but a crocheted throw she made for one of her chairs. You can see all that quantum science oozing out all over the pixels…
As usual I shall post a link to the quiescent state of the material, so that you can judge the true effect of the quantum innervation :)
Thank you for taking the time to look and for all your comments. I hope you enjoy the image and smile at the text :) Happy Sliders Sunday!

The imposing brick structure was erected at the beginning of 6th century by order of Bishop Ursicinus, using money from the Greek banker Iulianus Argentarius. It was certainly located next to a Christian cemetery, and quite possibly on top of a pre-existing pagan one, as some of the ancient tombstones were re-used in its construction.
Sant'Apollinare in Classe was consecrated on May 9, 549 by Bishop Maximian and dedicated to Saint Apollinaris, first bishop of Ravenna and Classe. The Basilica is thus contemporary with the Basilica of San Vitale of Ravenna. In 856, the relics of Saint Apollinaris were transferred from the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe to the Basilica of Sant' Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna.
The exterior has a large façade with two simple uprights and one mullioned window with three openings. The narthex and building to the right of the entry are later additions, as is the fine 9th century round bell tower with mullioned windows.
The church is on a nave and two aisles. An ancient altar in the mid of the nave covers the place of the saint's martyrdom. The church ends with a polygonal apse, sided by two chapels with apses.
The nave contains 24 columns of Greek marble. The carved capitals of the columns depict acanthus leaves, but unlike most such carvings the leaves appear twisted as if being buffeted by the wind. The faded frescos depict some of the archbishops of Ravenna, and date to the 18th century. The lateral walls are bare, but were certainly once covered with gorgeous mosaics. These were likely demolished by the Venetians in 1449, although they left the mosaic decoration in the apse and on the triumphal arch, the church's most striking features.
The upper section of the triumphal arch depicts, inside a medallion, Christ. At the sides, within a sea of clouds, are the winged symbols of the four Evangelists: the Eagle (John), the Winged Man (Matthew), the Lion (Mark), the Calf (Luke). The lower section has, at its two edges, the walls showing precious gems from which twelve lambs (symbols of the Twelve Apostles) exit. The sides of the arch show two palms which, in the Bible's symbolism, represent justice; under them are the archangels Michael and Gabriel, with the bust of St. Matthew and another unidentified saint.
The decoration of the apse date to the 6th century, and can be divided into two parts:
in the upper one, a large disc encloses a starry sky in which is a cross with gems and the face of Christ. Over the cross is a hand protruding from the clouds, the theme of the Hand of God. At the side of the disc are the figures of Elijah and Moses. The three lambs in the lower sector symbolize the saints Peter, James and John, alluding the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor.
in the lower one is a green valley with rocks, bush, plants and birds. In the middle is the figure of Saint Apollinaris, portrayed in the act of praying God to give grace to his faithful, symbolized by twelve white lambs.
In the spaces between the windows are the four bishops who founded the main basilicas in Ravenna: Ursicinus, Ursus, Severus and Ecclesius, all with a book in a hand. At the sides of the apse are two 7th century panels: the left one, which has been much restored, portrays the Byzantine Emperor Constantine IV granting privileges to an envoy of the Ravenna's archbishop. In the right panel are Abraham, Abel and Melchisedek around an altar, on which they offer a sacrifice to God.
The choice of the subject is closely linked to the fight against Arianism, as it restates the both divine and human nature of Christ, the former negated by the Arians. In addition, the representation of Apollinaris among the apostles was a legitimation to Maximian as the first bishop of a diocese directly related to the early followers of Jesus, being Apollinaris, according to the legend, a disciple of St. Peter.
The Krakkau 1 is a 3rd generation main battle tank prototype built by the United Carpathians' Army. It was a quick and cheap response to the on-going Common Main Battle Tank program. It was heavily rebuilt from Kogot 2 medium tanks which were avalaible in great numbers. It received composite armor and ERA plating on the hull, a 1000hp multi-fuel engine and a completely new turret. However it came at a price. The tank's weight went from 38t to 52t but the new engine and the hydropneumatic suspension negates that effect. Most of the extra weight came from the larger turret which later ended up on the Krakkau 2. Its front is thick and well sloped plus it mounts a significantly bigger gun, a 120mm smooth-bore cannon and 55 rounds for it which are separated from the fighting compartment by an electrically operated door. The Krakkau 1 is also equipped with two heavy machine guns, one mounted co-axially, the other on an anti-aircraft mount, Global Positioning System (GPS) and Thermal Observation and Gunnery System, enabling it to fight at night in poor visibility and through smoke screens.
Some backstory for my country in DC6:
The base model, the Kogot 2 was a late 40s/early 50's era tank in service of the USST's Army. However, the Tongorian Union collapsed in 1956 due to the extensive arms race it could no longer fund. In the coming years a new country emerged on the ashes of the Union. At first, the Carpathian Economic Community was a reqional organisation which aimed to bring about economic integration and equality between its member states. It was created by the Treaty of Chongrad of 1962. Upon the formation of the United Carpathians in 1971, the CEC was incorporated. It united all of the smaller nations in the region that now were free from the Tongoria's tyranny. They are now called the United Carpathians, treating all member states the same.

Doesn't she look like a "Morticia"?
I haven't posted many duplicate species this year, partially because over half of my posts were "first sightings", which by nature negates that. This species was one of my "firsts" near the beginning of the month, but that was a young one and looked so different that I wanted to share this adult in her Halloween finery. To me she appears elegant and decked out in Halloween colors - black and white, orange and blood red. I find her evening wear very striking.

Hay bale.
I’m not sure it’s a good thing when you start taking photographs just so you can mangle them for Sliders Sunday. It seems a bit like planning an accident, premeditating mayhem…
This is a picture of the black plastic wrapping of a hay bale sitting in a field.
Well, in truth it was more of a parkland lawn in front of a grand house, the sort that has huge ornamental trees dotted about in an artistically contrived way, with three finely-bred horses idly grazing in a select corner… a carefully constructed rural vista for the mansion’s windows.
And I wasn’t trespassing, honest. There are two paths that cross the field. These are part of the wonderful English system of public footpaths, which give legal rights to everyone to use whenever they wish.
As far as I am aware, in order to establish a public footpath you must demonstrate that the public had used the path unchallenged every day for a year. That’s why landowners of industrial estates and business parks often close the access roads for one day a year (typically Christmas) to prevent the creation of an ongoing access right.
So new footpaths are rare these days, and most were formed like these in Victorian times when the workers walked from their hovels to the local woollen mills to work each day. The valley is littered with them and it’s part of the attraction of the place.
I’m glad nobody saw me take picture: I must have looked strange in this grand setting, crouching down, pointing an unwieldy lens at the crumpled featureless plastic of the bale temporarily left lying by he agricultural contractor. They would have thought me mad. (I know you already think I’m mad, but let’s try and keep it between ourselves if we can).
Ah, you would like to know the recipe? (And now I know I am just talking to myself :) ).
Take dubious pic. Duplicate image layer and flip one horizontally. Blend with Difference, stirring continually. So that gets you the symmetry. The rest is really just getting the colours and tones.
Merge Visible to get a new layer in the pan. Blend it back with the existing two with Negation - a flavour which seems to favour these ingredients.
Make a copy of the merged layer mentioned above and blend it back with the underlying three, this time with a touch of Reflect.
Merge Visible again a blend this back with what has gone before adding Glow to the melange.
Merge the whole lot again, stirring continuously to thicken the mixture and boil off some of the weaker colours. Duplicate this merge and apply a Curves layer in LAB mode and tweak to taste. Soften the resulting goulash by blending back with the first copy (unCurved) using selective blend ranges.
Serve with LayerFX, a dark Inner Glow with reduced opacity to give a burnt edges effect.
Note that this is all wok cooking and doesn’t involved those pesky plugin ovens :)
I shall post an image of the raw ingredients in the first comment.
Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Sliders Sunday :)

Peter.
he imposing brick structure was erected at the beginning of 6th century by order of Bishop Ursicinus, using money from the Greek banker Iulianus Argentarius.
The three lambs in the lower sector symbolize the saints Peter, James and John, alluding the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor.

we refuse?
Poverty,

Why when they can only bite the dust,

I have no idea why I'm uploading stuffs from years back when I had my first cam, Powershot A520. It made me realize how much I've grown as an artist. I wish to share with you guys of my roots and how much passion I had for conceptual art and still life. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as you had for my recent pieces.
Those were the days when I go full throttle with my ideas but negates the technical side of photography. So excuse the amateur standard, friends.
And to Noxstar, my dear friend, thanks for the sweet testimonial :)

Since the late 1970s Anish Kapoor has extended the scope and language of contemporary sculpture through his exploration of scale, material and colour, and the concept of the void, which he considers not as an absence but as an invitation to presence. As with the work Gathering Clouds I-II-III-IV, materials are not painted, but impregnated with pigment, so as to negate the idea of an outer surface, inviting the viewer in to the inner reaches of the imagination. The artist’s intention is to engage the viewer through the dark cavities of the work, awe and fascination through their size and simple , their inviting surfaces and their reflective surfaces or impalpable dark voids. Here, the artist has succeeded in creating a balance between the physical presence of the pigment and the sublime of the void.

When I saw this image in the camera, I immediately thought that it was potentially nice 'art', rather than just documentation. Towards that end, it has gone through a number of steps of processing. That in turn rather negates any of the camera exposure settings you would otherwise see on the right. One of the few times I don't share such information...and only because they don't matter when such alterations have been made.
Hope you like the 'art' of the goose wings in this aggressive shot.

This was my first visit here and after negotiating a rather boggy meadow the views across the loch were fantastic. The only minus was a consistent breeze negating the possibility of getting good reflections of the castle.

My leaves bloom in winter
When all else fall to waste;
Their seeds of mystic origin
Negate the season's rule;
Though skies are but a-gloom,
They rise as if it's spring;
In misty cold, they caper
As winter's their own friend.

Quite literally, shortly before his death Langston Hughes left no doubt that he wrote for black folk everywhere. If other kinds of folk enjoyed his work and took something from it, good. But, from the beginning of his career till the end of it, he was without apology proudly pro-black. And, he did pay a price for being too political and not putting the European way in every way on a pedestal to be emulated and worshipped.
Many of Hughes words are for "us." Often coy, indirect, full of double meanings like the poem above, he wrote of his primary affection which was for other men of African descent, brothers (brothas) everywhere regardless of ethnicity or country in the word. Our dreams, our desires he captured with quiet dignity. Hughes proved that being black and gay was not a negation or invalidation of the other, nor did it mean an absence of black pride. For those gay brothers willing to read and listen to him, he reminded them that they were not alone. He makes us remember how handsome "we" are! Never in the slightest did he write in praise of "other" men, challenging a stereotype about black gay desire when a number of his other black gay contemporaries catered to it.
HUGHES WANTED US!
That he left a portion of his estate to Sunday Osuya, the young African man he fell in love with, speaks volumes.
We should have a land of sun,
Of gorgeous sun,
And a land of fragrant water
Where the twilight
Is a soft bandanna handkerchief
Of rose and gold,
And not this land where life is cold.
We should have a land of trees,
Of tall thick trees
Bowed down with chattering parrots
Brilliant as the day,
And not this land where birds are grey.
Ah, we should have a land of joy,
Of love and joy and wine and song,
And not this land where joy is wrong.
Oh, sweet away!
Ah, my beloved one, away!
Our Land, poem for a Decorative Panel by Langston Hughes
A mineral warm-water-form has snapped and fallen several meters down a steep slope (see its current position below). The view from its original position is presented here.
Agricultural terraces can be seen on the hill opposite above the Tarn river. The slope of this late neolithic paramegalith is perhaps too steep for terraces and is strewn with monoliths and perhaps best suited for modern-day bouldering or mushroom and blackberry-ing.
A little further down the slope, in the direction of the river, can be found some evidence of drystone walls and field systems, but nothing as systematic as true terrace systems.
The current explanation for these stones is 'pressoir' or fruit press. Taking fruit from the meagre productions of adjacent lands, up hill ... up a very steep hill ... up a very steep and boulder filled hill, does not make sense, and would require a local level of daftness that is just not human. Myriad other reasons exist to negate this explanation (see past posts), and other so-called 'pressoirs' are in similar craggy upper south facing positions.
As a south facing slope, bathed in sun and capable of converting cold water into warm water via deep-heated mineral mass in contact with shallow pools of water (whilst at the same time capturing storm water into pots) this site is once again a view that reads a local landscape, offering oversight for those assembled at an early manifestation of a category that may split to become 'lavoir', font, citern and other specialised production forms hidden by roof.
Romans were interested in a will-to-power, and a ritual and gently productive local assembly point by boulders would have been out of character.
Celtiberic citern technology was advanced but tied in with conglomoration and urbanisation - here, on this steep slope, both words make little sense.
An systematic version of some larger basins found in Spain is a future avenue, as it the possibility that certain warm water forms were deepened into citerns (see below).

This time an infrared from that walk along the aspen vista trail.
The sun came through at intervals enabling the infrared.
For those unfamiliar with modern digital infrared, a filter is used that allows primarily long wavelengths within the infrared portion of the spectrum to pass through to the camera's sensor.
In my circumstance, I use a filter that allows primarily 720nm wavelengths through the lens into the camera. It screws on to the outside of the lens.
With the filter on, I set a custom white balance by aiming at sunlit foliage and followed the camera's directions for setting that. I've saved that white balance and my ISO 1600 as a custom setting that I can choose quickly when I want to shoot with the IR filter on. Using the foliage to set the white balance keeps the foliage looking more neutral.
I had considered getting my camera converted to strictly infrared, by sending it to a specialty shop. This would negate the need for an external IR filter and allow lower ISOs, faster shutter speeds, and more narrow apertures. The conversion process removes the IR blocking filter from in front of the sensor and implants a filter that allows one of the IR wavelengths.
Wavelengths from which to choose are commonly 720nm, 590nm, 665nm, 850nm. The Hoya R72 like my Zomei lets primarily 720nm through and it's a nice basic choice. The file looks very magenta. It can be edited to look black and white as I've done here, or false color channel swapping can be done, or something in between, or your choice of mixes and matches.
The 850nm creates a deep black and strong white image. Very contrasty and bold.
The wavelengths of 590nm and 665nm let more visible light through to the sensor and therefore more color.
Images created using unfiltered cameras can of course be edited to resemble those shot through infrared filters. Converting to black and white, darkening blues and lightening greens and yellows will create an infrared like image.
But I find there is something more satisfying to me in the image created using the infrared wavelengths. Maybe it's the glow. Maybe it's the luminosity of foliage that is reflected to the sensor. Maybe it's how clouds look.
It's something intangible, perhaps like the feeling some have for film rather than digital.

New Year's Day is always an outdoor day for me. I use to stay up late on NYE but over the years I have begun to favor an early bedtime in order to get a head start on the fresh year - generally heading out somewhere to be in nature. This year saw me hiking Silver Falls State Park. But I have talked about my New Year habits in previous posts over previous years. The thread of today's image is actually involving Harman Phoenix 200 - the film used to make this image.
I will say, I have not completely made up my mind on this film, though my opinion of it has evolved since my first roll with it. It is definitely interesting stuff and I am glad Harman is making it. How long it remains available is still to be seen though. But even if it is phased out, it seems like that will be just to make room for a newly evolved color film.
But it does surprise me sometimes how film photographers don't quite seem to realize how malleable a material film is to work with. I see it sometimes at work. Customers will drop off film and then be amazed to discover how much work we can do to an image at the printing or scanning stage. Some think the image is more or less baked into the film and there is only one possible way that it will come out of a printer. But this also happens online too, especially with the rise of home developing and home scanning. Folks will develop a film like Phoenix then scan it (sometimes poorly) and characterize it by the results they get as if those are the only results possible. One example of this is the fact that Phoenix has a purple base. Most color films have a dusky orange film base. But Phoenix must share technology with XP2, a black and white C-41 film also known for a blue-purple film base. This purplish base makes it trickier to scan since a lot of film scanners are calibrated to see, and negate, the orange film base. And since we are dealing with negatives where everything inverts, that purple base of Phoenix inverts into a yellow-orange color cast in the positive scans. That is to say unless you work to correct/calibrate for it. My initial tests with this film only had modest color corrections and I just kind of let it be yellowish. But then I saw some optical prints we had done in our lab where our printing tech had put in a bit more effort to see if he could correct Phoenix to something a bit more neutral. The results impressed even me and at first I did not even realize the prints I was looking at had come from Harman Phoenix. So having seen this as an example of what the film could do I spent more time scanning my next couple of rolls. Specifically I used the Nikon Coolscan's ROC (restoration of color) feature to automatically correct the color cast. It did an impressive job but also had a tendency to add too much contrast. So lately I have been dialing in the color corrections manually and ending up with results like this image and without the heavy yellow tinge of my earlier images made on Phoenix.
I guess my point is multi-pronged. One - be careful about rushing to conclusions, especially when you have relatively little evidence to work with. Two - don't believe everything you read online because the folks giving you info might be failing at point One. Three - Remember that you are blind to your own blind spots. Meaning you have them, but you cannot see them. And it is easy to forget about something you cannot see. I had begun to characterize my own expectations of this film without realizing it and it took the print work of our lab to make me conscious of the bias I was forming about Phoenix. Four - keep your mind open and be curious, don't stop asking questions and don't stop looking for the answers to them, even if you want to think you already know those answers.
Anyhoo, just some Phoenix-related thoughts that may or may not be applicable in other ways.

A small creek cascades over rocks and fallen trees within the Quinault Rain Forest. Fallen trees are a common sight in the rain forest environment. The abundance of surface water negates the need for tap roots causing the roots to grow close to the surface. Without a deep root system the trees can easily topple during periods of high wind. I saw one spot where over a hundred trees had toppled like dominoes, one after the other. The good news is, there seems to be more trees here than there are insects on earth. I honestly have never seen an area this dense with trees.

Back at Emporium the crew sets about the task of grabbing every single sand car, both loads and empties, that are there. This would be the last day of sand unloading at Emporium, as the unloading point had been moved to Turtlepoint, much closer to Olean and negating the need to drag loaded sand cars over Keating Summit.
Unfortunately for railfans, this means the line south of Turtlepoint and over Keating Summit will be much quieter these days as the only traffic for now will be rock cars going to and from NS at Driftwood.
California Zephyrs meet at Cheyenne. I'm not sure if this was an everyday occurrence or not back then. To reach Cheyenne these train had to pull in or back in from where the Denver branch connected to the UP transcon main at Borie, a distance of about 5-miles.
A year later Amtrak built a small station near Borie that negated the need for the pull-in, back-out moves to Cheyenne. Then in 1983 Cheyenne was bypassed by the Cal Zephyr all toghether when the Rio Grande joined Amtrak and the train rerouted via the DRGW between Denver at Salt Lake City.

This is wes_turngrate/ fantastic version of the Jinty. I have only slightly deviated from the original with 3d parts and a few new LEGO parts that weren't available when it designed. Also has working lights.
Would like to shorten cab to 5 studs and extend firebox but battery negates this. Also waiting for LEGO to do some gold syringes for the valves.
Update cab shortened. Battery just fits. Had to strip it down to find space for motor connections.
