Autumn leaves.

There is something alluring about walking under a tree canopy in autumn and looking up to the bright sky and seeing the glorious colours of the chlorophyll-depleted leaves….

And if you have a camera with you there is the niggling call of that inner visual hunter that just longs to capture it. And so you point the camera and click.

Then you get home and look at the result. And sigh.

It’s never quite the same - the essence has evaporated, that ephemeral zephyr of fleeting beauty has flown. And so you consign the image to that huge collection that clutters your disk, labelled “Tried… and failed”.

This is one such taken in November of last year (see the in-camera original in the first comment).

So what to do?

This was a mess about on the iPad for Sliders Sunday this week. It’s a play with the colour in the image employing some of the usual culprits.

The main effect was created by using a Maximum Blur filter adjustment layer (at a low level) with the Contrast Negate blend mode. This particular mode isn’t available on Photoshop and is a rather curious one. It’s a kind of inversion blend - if you blend a copy of an image with the original using this mode you end up with a zero contrast image: a sheet of plain grey. So negating contrast indeed.

But if you use the blend mode like this on different layers it creates some interesting colour sports in a negative-style image. And that is what I was looking for.

The rest was done using Curves in Lab mode, to introduce a greater variety of colours, and then using an HSL adjustment layer to mess with various colour ranges.

Finally a bit of USM sharpening to harden the edges - it always seems to help a bit. (The image is rotated a bit to get the branch coming out of the top left corner.)

Happy Sliders Sunday!

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image :)

It was a wonderful storm here with low winds, enough to negate the sea surge and 85 mm of rain badly needed after an extremely dry summer. Thanks Teddy.

Dolmens are strongly associated with the Neolithic and cromlechs with the bronze age, with the image of the chalcolithic buffering hundreds of years between. In truth there is some room for blur. The two smaller dolmens (on the mountain rise behind this outcrop) are situated aside a path that can riddle all the way to the Cromlech de Gurrundué, and are late examples of this megalithic form, with dates in approximate time with an early bronze age cromlech. The main dolmen of Tella (again behind these vivid outcrops) is a little bigger, but still from the very end of the Neolithic. The view from the cromlech and from Tella of the hidden peaks of the three sisters (Las Treserol) is a constant. I have linked images of the three dolmens and the cromlech below. I have also linked a close image of Las Treserol - a truly mythical mountain comparable and contrastable with, for example, Mt Kailash.

Prior to the Neolithic, most all people moved over a year, and replacing the sense of 'landscape' with an act - 'pilgrimage', is perhaps to be expected. 'Las Treserol' is in my opinion the easiest idea of a central peak to the whole Pyrenees mountain range. Its myth is of three sisters. Sisters marry away from the local clan, and in deeper times past, perhaps suffered from a dissonance of sense of place. 'Three sister' myths from mountain peaks that feed water, touch the sky and seem to have power over the elements might offer a greater focus without negating local family and clan stories. There are varieties of the story of the three sisters and with medieval and post medieval pressures one must imagine that these may have changed.

Rock art from a modified cave is also linked below - to illustrate a potential intermediate point for pilgrims. The same style of energetic star image is visible in a second carved space some 270km to the west. The second space did not become a hermitage and remains unclassified. The stars may be icons from a cult that existed in pre Christian ages. With the second site set back behind the Ebro and on a path north to the Atlantic, a cult of water with sparkles of the sun offering dances of 'stars' may be possible. Here the many 'suns' are reflections of the sun via water, with the rock capturing the ripple of the water surface. One sun, many sparking reflections like the twinkling of stars at night. One sun with a capacity to mosaic its influence in multiple ways. I look into ideas of pilgrimage around Tella in many associated posts.

One could argue this image might look successful in B&W. And, there is a strong case for that thought. However, it would negate the narrative of the shot. That is to say the small amount of colour is the story in and of itself. Hence the title.

On this monochrome inducing day, the clouds, the rocks, and even the ocean were various levels of grey. But, when the green of the ocean peaked through and under an incoming wave, the story was there in front of me. Catching that small amount of color became significant to the narrative, and made everything else, support it.

Tree in fog intentional camera movement.

I took this about a month ago on top of a hill in fog. It’s a circular movement ICM of a tree looming out of the murk at about 4pm.

I was all alone up there in a silent grey world of mystery and vague unease.

This rather radically (but simply) processed for my monochrome 100x project - I am so far behind. I rather like the effect though I may be in a crowd of one :)

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Thursday Monochrome :)

8/19/21, I replaced this photo after realizing a processing error that negated the intended focus stack.

Reflecting inward always is balanced with reflecting outward. The tininess of our lives compared to the vastness of the universe, doesn't negate the magnitude of our existence to me. It highlights the precious nature of life and the need to value our time even more.

This summer has seen a big uptick in tourism here in Alaska. I thought that we would see a slight increase over the past two years - but I have been amazed at the number of bikers and recreational vehicles seen jamming our roadways.

When I say "recreational vehicles" - I'm not talking about small campers - I'm talking about huge motorhomes towing cars, and most of them are a part of so called "caravans", (which in itself is costly).

On the other side of the coin - I have never seen so many motorcycles. While it is a much cheaper way to see our great state - it is not the most comfortable way to travel, especially when mother nature decides to dish out cloudy and rainy weather every other day, like she has this year.

In this photo you see two bikers who passed us at a high rate of speed - only to be stopped by road construction, thereby negating any time they may have gained in racing over the rugged road surface.

Mallallapuram (India) - On each trip, I always take two or three photos of tourists in situation. Tourists that denote the decor and that behave like ... tourists.

This unpretentious photo illustrates my point quite well. What most caught my attention was the contempt that the two Westerners showed towards this poor Indian saleswoman. She approached discreetly, without the slightest aggression, and waited for the two Europeans to take an interest in her. Hardly wasted, they did not give him the slightest glance. A perfect illustration of the negation of the other.

I also get harassed by street vendors at times, but I always get away with a little humor, exchanging a few words. Although sometimes, depending on the country, sellers can be painful. But there, the poor woman, so discreet was painful to see.

I'm frequently asked about my love of B&W photography and my interest in street photography.

I started shooting B&W on film in the 1970s and have generally preferred it as it strips out the distraction of colour.

When we got our second schnauzer, I wanted something to do when I was out walking the dogs so I bought a rangefinder styled PEN-F with a few fast primes and and I was able to easily carry the gear and take my dogs out for a walk, looking for street shots as I went.

This image was the first street shot that I took that made me realise that this was a genre I could pursue while walking the dogs, so it's now around 4 years that I've been shooting this style.

The incredible IBIS on Olympus cameras negated the need for a tripod and most shots are taken single handed as I've the dogs leads in my other hand.

My everyday carry camera is now the Leica Q2M which is a B&W only camera and while the OIS on the Leica is not as good as the IBIS on the Olympus, the 28mm Summilux lens is fantastic and the sensor can easily cope with ISO12800.

The intricate brickwork and centrepiece window of this "Independent Sabbath School" caught my eye. The datestone says it was built in 1890.

The crumpled poster reads:

"The blood of Jesus Christ... cleanseth us from all sin." (1 John 1:7)

Maybe you attended Sunday school as a child. Perhaps you still go to church regularly. On Judgement Day, neither our church attendance nor our "good works" will be enough to save us.

In fact, to rely on oneself in any way negates the all-sufficency of Christ's once-for-all sacrifice:

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.

(Ephesians 2:8-9)

Despite being a trail-fail, nose-coupled shot, there's still plenty to enjoy on this study of SCL BQ23-7 #5135. This unit was one of ten such built for the SCL in attempt to consolidate crew positions on local freights to negate the use of cabooses. While the "Q" series wasn't a success, it was but one step in the large evolution that took place. This unit was not yet a year old when photographed on the SAL at South Richmond in the spring of 1979. No photographer listed, JL Sessa collection.

I'm very surprised by the raw capabilities of the Google Pixel 7. Crazy! It kinda negates the need of a small portable camera.

This waterfall is upstream form Haifoss. I know many people take pics to get both falls in, but I chose to highlight each on independently because they were both so spectacular. Besides, including both falls in a single image would negate the canyon walls you see here behind Granni.

Was sitting on the rail at a recent cattle sale when an old friend tapped me on the shoulder got to talking and remembered this old house in his paddock and of course JF had photographed it from road with a long lens.....and he had viewed the results and gave me the go ahead to walk about in the night which I did tonight.

www.flickr.com/photos/johnfinnanimages/8985187525/

The light pollution from the traffic shining across the slight rise was quite significant so this is actually a composite shot took the sky down a little, this was the sky above the house but a smidgeon higher, to negate some of the pollution of the horizon which I will post one as shot, as was, in the future as I find appealing in its own way. This shot of the house is lit from the headlights of cars about a kilometre away with their high beam shining across to this, the next hill.

Progress was very evident on the Ottumwa Amtrak platforms this weekend and I assume they'll be set by the end of this week on the northeast quadrant. It seems to be taking a little bit more time than expected to set these into place because of the thinness of the stainless steel plates that are being welded together. I had a beer with the contract welding supervisor who wasn't too keen on the engineers' designs on the stuff. Surely it was a cost-cutting measure in a vacuum, but the extra care it takes to weld to lower tolerances for thinner material negate that savings...

Good luck kayaking on a solid ice pond!

This was a difficult spot for photography. The waters edge around this spectacular pond is 99% private property. I'm sure there were dozens of better vantage points around the lake, but you can't exactly plant a tripod in the middle of somebody's backyard. I was forced to shoot looking directly into the sun with the light reflecting straight off the ice into the lens. I decided to get low behind these kayaks to negate the reflection off the ice. I wasn't really happy with the colours in the photo, so a selective colour edit seemed the best way to create something interesting from an otherwise bland and overexposed image. I hope you like it.

This stately mansion, built in 1909 by John B. Headspeth for Francis H. Wagner, a freight agent for the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad, originally stood at 200 East 40th Street. Frank and Bettie Hamilton Woodburn bought the home in 1920 and it remained in the family until the 1970s. Bettie was the daughter of Jack Hamilton, a colorful Texas character: a friend of Lincoln and a Union sympathizer, forced to hide out and then leave Texas after secession; he returned as Governor appointed by President Andrew Jackson. Bettie Woodburn wrote and proofread many speeches for her father, a highly praised orator.

In 1978, the Hyde Park Baptist Church purchased the house, which was already zoned historic, and planned to move it out of the city. To Hyde Park, the house symbolized the neighborhood’s commitment to restoration and revitalization. After a year-long struggle, the church allowed George Boutwell to move the house to its present location at 4401 Avenue D.

The move saved the structure but negated its historic designation. Boutwell restored the exterior and rebuilt the porches. In 1980, he sold the house to Larry and Terry Smith, who helped him regain its historic designation as a City of Austin Historic Landmark.

The following owners, Herb and Sandra Dickson, continued with interior renovations and operated the house as a bed and breakfast. The Woodburn House features elements of Queen Anne and neo-

classical styles. It combines a late Victorian asymmetrical plan and a steeply pitched roof with a classical two-story wraparound gallery featuring Doric columns and turned balusters.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, the Hyde Park Historic District includes an eclectic mixture of architectural styles, from late 19th-century Queen Anne and Classical Revival homes to 20th-century bungalows and ranch houses. Additionally, many of the houses and buildings in Hyde Park have been designated City of Austin Historic Landmarks and Texas Historic Landmarks.

A rainy morning photographing the swamps of southern US. Photographing these swamps is turning out to be a lot harder than I thought, all the shots are taken hand held from a kayak so I have been shooting at iso's upto 2000 so i can get a fast enough shutter speed to negate the movement of the boat.

Another two-image set with a standard edit and a version for Sliders Sunday. It’s of a white paeony with yellow twiddly bits, subsequently twiddled to something quite different.

I’ve done this sort of thing before with a flower and quite liked the result. The basic approach is to duplicate the flower image layer, use a Diffuse adjustment on the top layer and then try various blend modes on that layer to blend it with the underlying layer. Difference, Subtract or Negation modes seem to produce quite interesting effects The result is often quite dark, but colourful, so you just need to brighten it and twiddle the colours… or mess about with it another way ;)

This version was blended using Subtract. The underlying image layer was formed of two, duplicated image layers blended with Colour Burn at 26% opacity.

I’ll post a link to the in-camera image in the first comment as the standard edit took it some way.

Thanks for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Sliders Sunday :)

Compared to its predecessor, the exterior of the 1929 Cadillac was little changed. Parking lamps were moved from the cowl to the tops of the fenders—a subtle modification providing a bit sportier look. Significant changes took place under the sheet metal. Most important was a new “clashless” Synchro-Mesh Silent-Shift transmission, negating the need for double-clutching while also enabling much smoother gear selection. New mechanical four-wheel brakes required considerably less pedal pressure than earlier models, and shatterproof Security Plate glass became standard in all windows. The suspension system featured new double-acting Delco shock absorbers, and the finely upholstered fully adjustable seats became standard.

The expression "Versión Fruna" in Chile is colloquially used to refer to a cheaper or lower-quality version of a product or service. This phrase originates from the Fruna brand, known for producing sweets and food at more affordable prices compared to other more recognized brands.

It's a pejorative term, and yet it's a phrase used by someone, by many, ultimately by a country that perceives itself as superior in its delusion... when in reality it doesn't realize its own self-negation ("the English of Latin America") and curiously, if you try the products from this Chilean brand, they are really good and economical, at least as good or better than the shit that comes from the USA, England or other countries...

Ox-eye daisy.

The question was how to create a fantabulous result for Sliders Sunday out of one of my daisy images…

Except it wasn’t, naturally. The real question was how to have fun playing with an average image that I am not going to use otherwise using Sliders Sunday as an excuse.

Corona is Latin for crown and appears in our languages all over the place - from Scandinavian kroner, Corona Borealis (the constellation), to solar coronas, Spanish beer and, of course, a family of viruses including colds and COVID which all are organisms that look like crowns. I thought it was an apt title in the circumstances!

I’ll post a link to an in-camera version in the first comment so you can see how far we came.

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Sliders Sunday :)

Cropped to 16:9 off-centre to give it some strength in the composition.

Image layer duplicated and blended with Linear Blend and blend ranges to protect the petals.

Depth of Field Blur to soften the petals and take out all the details there/Normal blend mode.

High Pass/Linear Light, aggressively to emphasise the centre lines.

Inpainting to remove spots and blemishes on the flower and sensor.

Minimum Blur adjustment/Normal blend mode. This is the first part of the magic as it creates blocky lumps in the centre of the flower.

HSL Shift Adjustment/Pin Light/63% opacity for a little bit more magic in the centre.

Posterise (24 colour levels)/Negation Blend/95% opacity. This was the second major part of the magic.

Maximum Blur adjustment/Multiply.

Merge result - layer effects to blue the edges

And we’re done :)]

It was water to the knees for this one and still couldn't get past this archway. The tides had scoured under the arch and was just to deep to go any further. With the high waves coming at me also negated going around and this was on dead low tide. So discretion was the better part of valour on this occasion...
