Green Bottle Flies are common throughout North America. They are a type of blow fly that may lay their eggs in rotting meat. Historically, blow fly maggots have been used for "maggot therapy" in necrotic tissue, such as in infected, untreated wounds. With widespread availability of antibiotics, "maggot therapy" is seldom used currently. However, with antibiotic resistant bacteria becoming more common, maybe we will see hungry blow fly maggots used again someday :-))
Coreopsis spp. are naturally occuring wildflowers. Two species (or varieties) are planted in my "wildflower" garden.

The Ankoù was not death himself, but rather a spirit who traveled around his parish every night collecting the souls of the dead with his scythe to present to Death by morning to take away. He would place them in a receptacle which came in many forms including that of a coffin. The stories of the Ankou are thought to be an ancient pagan legend that survived into Christian times.

She lost her tail in Spring 2020 and we didn’t see her again the next year so I assume she didn’t survive the cold months. Foxes need their big bushy tails for warmth in our harsh winters. More of her story in the comments, we think the tip of her tail became necrotic, perhaps from frostbite, and she eventually chewed the entire tail off.

A fairy ring, also known as fairy circle, elf circle, elf ring[1] or pixie ring, is a naturally occurring ring or arc of mushrooms. They are found mainly in forested areas, but also appear in grasslands] or rangelands. Fairy rings are detectable by sporocarps (fungal spore pods) in rings or arcs, as well as by a necrotic zone (dead grass), or a ring of dark green grass. Fungus mycelium is present in the ring or arc underneath. The rings may grow to over 10 metres (33 ft) in diameter, and they become stable over time as the fungus grows and seeks food underground.

Many years ago a retired Italian fisherman decided to share some wine with me and told me many tall tales of his adventures, but one always stayed with me - epic battles beneath the waves that took place during the full moon while squid fishermen lay at anchor hunting their prey. While the sea was calm and still strange sounds were heard coming from the dark waters which he told his grandchildren were Mermaids and their prey fighting epic battles of their own. He told me with a twinkle in his eye that it was sirens and their lovers...

The Cinphul outfit is not rigged to Jake but I found the Slink rig worked very well for me with no clipping at the knees. The rest is unrigged so you should be able to make it work for you quite well. Naminoke's Dumbo Octopus are utterly cute and come with bubbles too while the mad jellies are in fact, seats. I added various items old and recent including Nefekalum's Monochrome for materials perfectly suited for undersea critters.

she was pretty and soft and tended to gain weight. she was an independent basenji, not really belonging to any of the cliques in our group. she marched to her own drummer.

attached is my most favorite photo of her.
gracie had bitten quiz in the neck in a disagreement over something, a gopher, I think.
it was necrotic almost immediately, so the vet worked at saving her, and was bitten for her work. quiz was treated, elizabethan collar put on, and she was kept in an enclosure at the vet hospital, a cage with tall sides.
the vet wasn't happy with her.
but...the next morning when the staff appeared, the collar was found on the other side of the wall, the tall wall. quiz had removed and tossed it.
our vet called and said she understood more why we loved her independent self so.
she survived the wound only to be found riddled with cancer and helped along on the operating table 5 months later.
It survived the summer heat although part of the leaves are necrotic. Hopefully it will grow in a big tree for others (not me) to admire it. By the time this is a mature tree I may not be around to see it.

This is an updated process of one of my favorite images, originally posted early this year. Better clarity, punchier highlights, more shadow detail, MUCH less blue saturation, and a more appealing hue to this rendition. It's closer to reality, while being in line with the vision I had for the shot. I've been slowly revising it over the past seven months or so, and I think it's finally dialed. I guess something about winter in Minneapolis must have made me unable to see the ridiculous colors of a few images I put out around that time. Below is the text that accompanied my original post.

Wisconsin's Lake Superior ice caves require walking across a couple miles of lake ice to reach. Luckily for me, I chose to live in the Midwest the first winter they've been accessible since 2009. I missed a couple of rare freezes in the northwest while I was gone, but I gained this in exchange - and it's exactly the type of ice image I've longed for.
This image has a short story to accompany it. The formations you see at the top, framing the image, are maybe 3 feet off the icy floor. I went on a day that was relatively warm (+25F), and the floor was turning to supercooled slush farther into the cave. I had to lie down/crawl around in it for almost an hour to compose this image. When I stood up after shooting, I panicked.
I COULD NOT FEEL MY BUTT. This wasn't the numbness I had experienced growing up snowboarding, sledding, and playing in the snow. This was much worse. Was my butt frostbitten? Would it become necrotic and fall off in a couple days? Had I just sacrificed my gluteus for a single image? Is any image worth losing a butt over? I awkwardly hobbled the two miles back to my car, and didn't feel a single thing until I was on the road home.
I'm still worried my butt is going to fall off, guys.
I'm scared.

Solenostemon is a genus of perennial plants, native to tropical Africa, Asia, Australia, the East Indies, the Malay Archipelago, and the Philippines. They are commonly known as Coleus, a name which derives from an earlier classification under the genus name Coleus, species of which are currently included in either Solenostemon or another genus, Plectranthus.
Many cultivars of the southeast Asian species Solenostemon scutellarioides have been selected for their colorful variegated leaves, typically with sharp contrast between the colors; the leaves may be green, pink, yellow, maroon, and red (somewhat resembling the unrelated caladium). The plants grow well in moist well-drained soil, and typically grow 0.5-1 m tall, though some may grow as tall as 2 meters. Coleus are typically grown as ornamental plants. They are heat-tolerant, though they do less well in full sun in subtropical areas than in the shade. In cultivation in temperate areas, they are often grown as annuals as they are not hardy and become leggy and unattractive with age. In bright hot areas, the colors of the plant will typically be more intense in shaded areas than in full sun, and the plants will require less water there. Coleus also make low-maintenance houseplants, and can often be propagated by clipping a length of stem just below the leaves and putting the stem in water to root. The plant's flowers grow on a stem above that stem's leaves, and tend to be purple and quite small in comparison to the leaves. The plant is not generally grown for its flowers.
One disease that can affect coleus is downy mildew. This mildew appears on the leaves making the plant look dirty because it is brown in color. The organism is called Peronospora sp. and can also result in curled leaves. The leaves also twist. Sometimes symptoms are not found on leaves which make the disease harder to control.[1] Another disease is Impatiens necrotic spot virus which causes brown or yellow spots on leaves, rings, black or brown stem discoloration, and brown leaf veins. It is a virus that causes plants to die. The disease is spread by an insect called a thrips that develops the disease from an infected plant and carries it to an uninfected plant. It only takes a few of these insects to infect a whole greenhouse. [2]
There are two ways to propagate Coleus. Seeds are inexpensive and easily obtainable. Sprouts can show color in as little as two weeks. Alternatively, cuttings can be taken.

Natural selection at work.
Mother magpie comes to the nest, and a very sick-looking chick with a dull eye and a mouth that appears to contain necrotic material begs to be fed. Mother hesitates. A minute or so later, the healthy chick with the bright eye and healthy pink mouth asks to be fed, and is rewarded. Nature has its way of selecting the strongest.
It remains to be seen how many species extant today will have the strength to cope with rapidly changing climatic conditions.
