“Up The Junction”
~~~~~~~~~~
It’s the classic tale. Boy meets girl, they fall in love, move in together and have a baby. Sometimes, we mess up the “classic love story” with problems which causes our life to derail. Sure, we may wake up and realize how we messed up. Unfortunately, by then it’s three years later and it’s too late to fix that mistake. Without a Third Rail to drive us, we’ll have no place to go.
It’s not over yet! We can still find our third rail! When we find it, we need to hang on, don’t let go and follow it, where ever it may take us. We still have time to stop ourselves from being Up The Junction!
Let’s face it, we all know that our world revolves around ourselves. Not in a conceited way. Rather, our world contains us, our family and friends. We often forget that there are other people, other cultures all living in their own little world on this giant planet. When we watch TV, we are jumping into the world of those characters.
We vacation in spots that are the opposite end of our spectrum. If we live in a land-locked city, we tend to vacation at the beach. If we live in the mountains, we tend to vacation in the city. My family and I live in a big city, very cramped. So, when on vacation, we like to get out where there is plenty of space and a whole different culture. We like to experience new things. We vacation in Lancaster, Pa. There is a large Amish community out there who hold old-world values sacred. They run at a much slower pace with way less stress. Just as fascinating as their culture is to us, the English world fascinate them. It’s not every day that you see their curiosity so candidly captured.
Don’t be so afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and learn new things. Once you do that, you’ll be surprised how interesting life can get.
Amish Advisory:
Before publishing, I consulted to a friend of mine who left the Amish community. These are her words:
“There is no problem with the photo having their faces in it. Some people get all bent out of shape over someone posting pictures of the Amish. The Amish do not have a problem with it. Most of them will not pose for photos because they consider photos to be graven images and they don't want to see their faces in a picture. But it does not concern them what others do with a photo of them. They understand that they peak a lot of curiosity from outsiders and are used to being photographed by them. They just don't want to own a photo of themselves, but they're not going to care if the world has a photo of them.”
This image is the last of my series of photos at Rumbling Kern on the Northumbria coast. The building in the distance is a 'bathing house' built in the Victorian era for Charles, the 2nd Earl Grey of nearby Howick Hall. The Earl had 16 children, so he needed something more elaborate than a bog-standard beach hut. ;)
Moving on, possibly few know that the tea was named after the same Earl Grey; and of more significance, as British Prime Minister from 1830 to 1834, his Government was responsible for passing the Great Reform Bill of 1832. His other reforms included restrictions on child labour and, most importantly, the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in 1833.
[Source: www.gov.uk/government/history/past-prime-ministers/charle...]
All in all, Earl Grey is one of our more effective Prime Ministers.
And this ties in neatly with the 2nd principle of NATURE FIRST, namely:
"Educate yourself about the places you photograph."
"Growin' up leads to growin' old and then to dyin'
Ooo, and dyin' to me don't sound like all that much fun"
~ John Mellencamp
When we were kids, the post important thing in life was play time. Everything we did, centered around play time. When play time came, our imaginations ran WILD. I still have the Sesame Street Playset that my sister and I played with as kids. Complete with Mr. Hooper standing by his store!
As we grow older our toys get a bit more expensive and our adventures change. In high school, I can remember sitting down behind my drum set and feeling unstoppable. I would play for four hours some times and it was amazing. It was such a magical thing to not have a care in the world and just PLAY.
When we become adults, we find that the time we have to play gets smaller and smaller with each responsibility we collect. The lack of that fun time can turn us into grumpy old people. I know, I have seen it. At times, it has even happened to me. Those are the times most of all, when we need to have our play time. My father and I have always had play time. Sometimes after joking around, my mother will yell at him telling him to grow up. His whole response is “NEVER!” It’s the silliness that keeps us young at heart. It’s what keeps us happy. As adults we are responsible for a lot of things. Our happiness is one of them. It’s up to us to keep that balance and never lose that kid in us. Stop what you are doing RIGHT NOW, and do something that will make you laugh! Be careful though, it’s contagious.
“Beulah Land” ~ ¥
~~~~~~~~~~
We all have that place we dream of living. We all say “Someday, we will move there“. I have always been a proud Philadelphian. I would never want to live outside the city. Before my wife and I got married, we were looking for a house to buy. We began our search a little further in the city where she grew up, but we wound up planting our roots not far from where I grew up. Here we are 15 years later in that same house. As we grow, life has a funny way of changing us. I found my religion again. Who would have thought that it would be in the same church that I left it.
When I was in high school, my parents and I decided to take a vacation and do something a little different. We booked a couple of nights in Lancaster, Pa. When we got there, we thought “what are we going to do up here, there is NOTHING here“. We had such a great time, we wound up staying an extra night. I have not been back since, but that very trip planted a seed inside me that I never knew was there.
It wouldn‘t be until I got married, that the seed began to grow. My wife and I decided to have weekend away at this Bed & Breakfast that she found on the internet. That weekend, we saw how beautiful Lancaster County was. We brought our kids back to show them and they fell in love with it too. It took 26 years for that seed to bud.
When I became a photographer, I knew I had to capture the beautiful land that God has made. Every time I see photos from Lancaster County, I feel this sense of longing to be there.
There is a family bluegrass band, The Petersens, that I often listen to that reminds me of Lancaster County. My favorite song is “Sweet Beulah Land“. The opening line is “I‘m kind of homesick for a country to which I‘ve never been“. I feel that way each time I come home from Lancaster County. It‘s the chorus that really gets me though:
“Beulah Land, I'm longing for you
And someday on thee I'll stand
And there my home shall be eternal
Beulah Land, Sweet Beulah Land”
I believe that Lancaster County is the closest thing to Heaven on Earth. Lord, I have found my Beulah Land.
