In the forest's graceful haze,

A gray squirrel twirls and plays,

With nimble paws and eyes so bright,

It dances with elegant delight.

Through the branches, it gracefully leaps,

As nature's secrets, it slyly peeps,

Its fur a tapestry of silver and gray,

A vision of beauty along the way.

With agile steps and a graceful stride,

It scampers, it glides, and it cannot hide,

Its tail, a feathery plume so grand,

Guiding its path across the land.

Among the trees, it finds its bliss,

A creature of charm, it cannot dismiss,

So delicate and full of poise,

Bringing nature's symphony with its voice.

Exhibit no. 4 of my Fern Fronds (photo-art) exhibition on the spectacular staghorn fern was generously selected for the 'Flickr Macro Explore' May 2021 takeover day.

The exhibit style presents a bold purple, red and yellow-orange colour mix, as well as showing the leaves that stem from the frond. As such the exhibit, in celebrating Art, Nature, and Colour, is well informed by photographic 'style' (as are all exhibits in this series).

To recall, 'style' is basically the way a photographer or ‘photoartist’ portrays the subject matter and expresses her or his vision, through the composition, which, here, stresses shape, texture, and colour.

On the latter, as the main emphasis, the staghorn fern frond is showed off in aesthetic (or beautiful) variants of green, yellow, pink and purple, and orange, as common to rare colours in nature.

In this exhibit, again, inverse colours of red, purple, and yellow-orange are introduced in moving more to the colour ‘inside’ nature).

On our subject, again, the staghorn fern, again, is an epiphyte or ‘air plant’ that grows without soil. Instead, it lives on host trees by using a tree’s branches to anchor itself.

It does not live off its host, instead the large, shield-like frond at the front curves outward to collect water and organic matter as it falls from above, as well as protecting the plant's roots, which also offers design ideas for environmental sustainability around eco-architecture perhaps.

For a good idea of the whole plant and more info: see: wimastergardener.org/article/staghorn-fern-platycerium-bi...

I hope you enjoy Exhibit 4 here, and in Flickr's photo-art online exhibition.

In the heart of the woodland’s embrace,

Where ancient trees stand tall,

A gray squirrel scurries with gentle grace,

Answering nature's call.

With fur as soft as silver mist,

It moves with practiced ease,

Through sunlit rays and shadows kissed,

Among the whispering trees.

Its tail, a plume of feathery gray,

Flicks with every leap,

As it dances through the branches,

In a silence the forest keeps.

With eyes that sparkle, quick and bright,

It surveys its leafy domain,

Collecting treasures, day and night,

Before the autumn rain.

A creature small, yet full of might,

With courage in its stride,

The gray squirrel thrives in nature’s light,

In the forest, wild and wide.

So let us marvel, as we see,

This acrobat of the wood,

For in its grace, so wild and free,

The gray squirrel lives as it should.

Following on from Exhibit 5, about 12 shots back, this exhibit is the second final one in the series. If you want more information about the series please see the last 5 shots, where info has been well presented in each one.

🌿 Captured a mesmerizing moment of two graceful Black-winged Stilts elegantly walking on the shimmering emerald waters. These slender waders seem to dance effortlessly on the liquid surface, their stark black and white plumage beautifully contrasting with the vibrant green backdrop. A true spectacle of nature's artistry! #NatureBeauty #AvianElegance #WildlifeWonders 🌊🍃

History: 📅 Flashback to a serene morning by the tranquil wetlands, where the air was filled with the symphony of chirping birds and the gentle rustling of reeds. As the sun's golden rays kissed the water's surface, my lens focused on this enchanting pair of Black-winged Stilts. These striking birds, with their impossibly long legs and slender beaks, were engaged in their timeless routine of foraging for aquatic insects and small crustaceans.

Their synchronized steps created mesmerizing ripples, forming an ever-shifting pattern of circles and waves. Against the lush green backdrop of aquatic plants, the scene looked like a painting brought to life. It was as if the stilts were walking on a canvas of liquid jade, their reflections extending the artistry beneath them.

As I quietly observed, I marveled at the elegance of their movements. With each step, they delicately balanced on their spindly legs, their slender bodies maintaining a perfect equilibrium. Their plumage, a study in contrasts, emphasized the beauty of their form: jet-black wings and back, contrasted with a snowy white front. Their beady eyes were focused intently on the water, a testament to their unwavering dedication to their quest for sustenance.

Nature's palette had chosen a harmonious blend of colors for this breathtaking tableau – the vibrant green of the aquatic vegetation, the pristine white of the stilts' feathers, and the deep black of their wings. It was a fleeting moment of tranquility and grace, a snapshot of life's delicate balance captured in a single frame.

I'm grateful to have witnessed and shared this glimpse of avian elegance with all of you. Let's celebrate the beauty of our natural world and cherish the moments that take our breath away. 🌏 #NaturePhotography #BirdWatchingMagic #ReflectionsOfLife 📷️

A rather distinctive and bulky warbler: male plain grayish overall with eponymous black cap; female and juvenile plain, slightly browner overall, with rusty-brown cap. Inhabits wooded and scrubby habitats, including gardens, sometimes visiting feeders in the winter. Small numbers winter in Western Europe, but most migratory birds move south to Africa and the Mediterranean region. Song is a varied, rather loud rich warble, often strident. Often gives a harsh “chakchak” call, usually in series. Rare dark morph with black-hooded male and brown-hooded female can be found on the Atlantic Islands and very scarcely elsewhere.

These are relatively large dragonflies. Their thoraces and abdomens are brown in color, with blue or yellow stripes or spots on the thorax, and yellow, blue or green spots on the abdomen.

Natalia von Ellenrieder's 2003 paper demonstrated that the Holarctic and Neotropical species placed in this genus did not share a common ancestor, and proposed the latter be placed in the genus Rhionaeschna.

The name Aeshna was coined by the Danish entomologist Fabricius in the 18th century. The name may have resulted from a printer's error in spelling the Greek Aechma, "a spear". The spelling Aeschna has been intermittently used over a period of time, but is now abandoned for the original name Aeshna. However, derived genus names (such as Rhionaeschna) retain the 'sch' spelling, as this is how they were first cited.

The common waxbill, also known as the St Helena waxbill, is a small passerine bird belonging to the estrildid finch family. It is native to sub-Saharan Africa but has been introduced to many other regions of the world and now has an estimated global extent of occurrence of 10,000,000 km²

Matka Canyon reveals its grand, rugged scale here. The steep trail to the Saint Nicholas Šiševski monastery leads you higher and higher, and is known as a demanding climb of about 60 minutes. No smooth walkway, but loose stones, rocky sections, and narrow bends along the hillside. Kanitha continues her ascent, now without her jacket, making her way up the narrow, stony path. From this point the landscape suddenly opens up: below you the dense forest drops away, in front of you the vertical limestone walls rise, and in the distance the layers of the canyon appear like waves of shadow folding over each other. Every step brings you deeper into the silent heart of Matka, where only the light, the wind, and the mountains set the rhythm. Here, surrounded by untouched nature and towering mountain slopes, you feel how demanding this climb truly is — but also how richly it rewards. It’s a route that requires perseverance, and along the way it treats you to views you won’t find anywhere else: rugged, quiet, and breathtakingly pure.

Higher up the trail, Matka Canyon shows its vast and rugged nature. The steep one-hour climb to the Saint Nicholas Šiševski monastery leads over loose stones and narrow, uneven paths. Kanitha makes her way up the slope as the forest drops away and the sheer cliffs rise around her. With every step, the quiet of the canyon deepens. It’s a demanding ascent, but one that rewards you with wide, peaceful views found nowhere else.

This photograph captures the raw essence of the Roadside Hawk, Rupornis magnirostris, in its natural habitat within the Mocagua Comunidad Indígena in Colombia. The hawk, perched with an air of vigilance, is set against a canvas of verdant foliage, characteristic of the Amazonian landscape. The bird's sharp gaze and robust stature are emblematic of its predatory nature, while its plumage blends seamlessly with the environment, showcasing nature's intricate design.

As a photographer, my goal is to bridge the gap between these majestic creatures and the observer, highlighting the subtle yet striking details that define the Roadside Hawk. The photograph strives to not just capture the physical beauty of this raptor, but also to convey a sense of the bird's role in the Amazon's ecosystem. The image serves as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of wildlife, encouraging a deeper respect and understanding of the natural world.

A panoramic view of Pinnacle Rock on Bartolomé Island in the Galápagos, showing volcanic formations, turquoise water, and the iconic sandy isthmus shaped by erosion and time.

This viewpoint overlooks one of the most recognizable landscapes of the Galápagos Archipelago. From this elevated position, the volcanic history of the islands becomes immediately legible: black lava fields, oxidized cinder cones, pale sand, and intensely blue water meet within a single frame. The narrow sandy isthmus and the sharp volcanic spire—known as Pinnacle Rock—are the result of erosion acting on once-active lava formations over thousands of years.

What makes this perspective iconic is its clarity. The composition reveals the geological forces that shaped the islands while also highlighting the fragile balance between land and sea. It is a place where scale, colour, and form come together to define the visual identity of the Galápagos.

In the forest's tranquil grace,

The gray squirrel finds its place,

With dainty paws and eyes so keen,

It's a vision of nature's serene scene.

Among the branches, it glides and weaves,

In the dappled light, among the leaves,

Its silver fur, a soft array,

Guiding it through its woodland ballet.

With a nimble spirit, it freely roams,

In nature's sanctuary, it finds its homes,

A creature so elegant, in every way,

Enhancing the beauty of each new day.

Oh, graceful gray squirrel, in your stride,

You dance through the woods, so full of pride,

In your presence, we find joy and cheer,

A reminder of nature's wonders, crystal clear.
