September 13, 2019 - This morning we are touring Gold Dredge 8 a National Historic District and also learn about the Trans Alaska Pipeline.
"Your adventure begins at Gold Dredge 8 with a ride on a replica of the Tanana Valley Railroad near some of the original rail routes. Once aboard our narrow gauge railroad, you will enjoy a short narrated journey to the dredge. Your regular conductor and commentator is Earl Hughes, who provides festive music along your journey. You will also learn from actual working hands at sites along the way." Previous text from the following website: golddredge8.com

September 20, 2024 - The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a National Historic Landmark. We will be riding it from Silverton to Durango, Colorado.
Since I was a teenager it has been on my bucket list to ride this train. I was disappointed however that we were booked on the excursion being pulled by a diesel locomotive and not a steam engine.
"The line was constructed to haul silver & gold ore from Southwest Coloradoās San Juan Mountains, but passengers soon realized it was the view that was truly precious.
This historic train has been in continuous operation between Durango and Silverton since 1882, carrying passengers behind historic steam and diesel locomotives and rolling stock indigenous to the line. It is a family-friendly ride sure to create memories that will last a lifetime while offering a view of Coloradoās mountain splendor inaccessible by highway. Relive the sights and sounds of yesteryear for a spectacular journey on board the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad." Previous text: www.durangotrain.com
This is the narrowest part of Narrow Neck Peninsula and it seems like the track drops off on either side straight down into the valleys below. It was good to have the waterproof P&S on this trip as despite the blue sky, rain showers swept through a couple of times on the ride.
