The volatility continued in equity benchmarks amid thin trading volumes as FIIs activity remained low due to Christmas vacation. The 30-share BSE Sensex was up 14.97 points at 26389.67 and the 50-share NSE Nifty gained 5.45 points at 8109.80. The market breadth was positive as about 971 shares advanced against 807 declining shares on the BSE. Bajaj Auto was the biggest loser among Sensex 30 stocks, down 2 percent followed by ICICI Bank, HDFC, Axis Bank, Hero Motocorp, ONGC and HUL while GAIL extended its previous day's rally, up nearly 2 percent on top of 2 percent upside yesterday. ITC, Infosys, TCS, L&T, NTPC and Coal India gained 0.7-1.3 percent. HDFC Bank rebounded after weak early trade.

NTPC Ltd and TERI signed an Agreement for collaborative research on “Optimizing resource use and reducing water footprints of electricity generation in India” on 15th December, 2015 in New Delhi. Opening Bell : Equity benchmarks extended losses in morning trade with the Nifty falling below the 8700 level due to profit booking. The 30-share BSE Sensex was down 127.57 points at 28051.51 and the 50-share NSE Nifty fell 34.65 points to 8674.30. The broader markets too remained under pressure on weak breadth. About 1169 shares declined against 862 advancing shares on the BSE. HDFC, HDFC Bank, HUL, Bharti Airtel, NTPC and GAIL were down more than 1 percent whereas ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Sun Pharma and Maruti were gainers in morning. Tata Group stocks remained under pressure after Tata Sons sacked Cyrus Mistry as chairman on Monday. Tata Steel, TCS and Tata Motors were down 1-2 percent.

The broader markets outperformed equity benchmarks after Federal Reserve hiked interest rate by 25 basis points to 1.25 percent, which was on expected lines. The 30-share #BSE #Sensex was up 18.30 points at 31,174.21 and the 50-share #NSE #Nifty fell 12.25 points to 9,605.90. The BSE Midcap index was up 0.2 percent and Smallcap gained 0.5 percent on positive market breadth. About 1,148 shares advanced against 713 declining shares on the BSE.
