Aspects of Penarth. A northward view through the ornate ironwork of the balustrade that runs for most of the length of the pier. Penarth Headland is on the left, whilst some of the buildings that face onto Cardiff Bay can be seen across the choppy waters of the Bristol Channel / Môr Hafren.

The 750ft Penarth Pier was opened to the public in 1898 and, despite fires and being hit by shipping, it survives, given a Pier of the Year accolade in 2014.

The parkland was designed to impress and it doesn't fail. Here you can explore the deer park and enjoy stunning views across the Shropshire countryside.

The estate runs to 4000 acres (over six square miles) with the Tern and Severn Rivers flowing across it and plenty of woodland to explore on specially designed walking routes.

The landscape park is flat permanent pasture, underlain in parts by ridge and furrow, with large numbers of mature parkland trees, mostly in clumps. There are plantation belts along its south and west boundaries. There is denser planting, including of ornamental trees, linking the Hall, stables and kitchen gardens, and along the west bank of the Tern. This, essentially, is the course followed by the circuit known as the Mile Walk. From its 800m long riverbank section, northward of the Hall, there are extensive views east over the deer park. Along its length are some of the largest specimen trees at Attingham including sweet chestnut and cedar.

We cruised northward from Joshua Tree that winter, staying just behind the storms battering the southwest, gaining all the photographer’s benefit of seeing our favorite haunts draped in fresh snow. Dawn shivered with hoarfrost on oaks that were the namesake of the creek out there in the meadow, and I blew on gloved fingers and paced around, waiting for the sun. Thirty five hundred feet above the valley floor, the Towers lit up along with the skies at sunrise, and gave me hopes for the day. The people who opened up this country were often surprisingly well read in the classics, and most knew their scriptures. Inspired by sacred places, they bestowed names that make them sacred still: Court of the Patriarchs, Angel’s Landing, The Great White Throne. The high point anchoring the right side of the Towers, stained red under the flat top of a sandstone pinnacle, reminded a clergyman over a century ago of a sacrificial altar, and so it became the Altar of Sacrifice. The name conjures biblical connotations of Abraham’s trust and even the rituals of the Aztecs, but the idea, central to every early culture, has modernized. The most dramatic burnt offerings today are probably votive candles, and gods are no longer feared. My parents’ generation taught us the virtue of sacrifice by their example, and looking up there I think of how natural that act is to us. I have a sister who has suffers all for one of those parents, her self-denial is an ultimate devotion. But it’s selfish to consider how much I have given up myself; others can judge that. Instead I’ll bow towards the Altar and say a silent thank you, to all those who have sacrificed something for me.

The Olrog's Gull is a relatively large and distinctive species that is endemic to the Atlantic coast of southern South America. It breeds solely in Argentina within two coastal regions separated by 700 km, spanning from southern Buenos Aires to southern Chubut. During the nonbreeding season, some birds disperse northward, reaching as far as Uruguay and southern Brazil.

Many Larus gulls are dietary generalists; however, the gaivota-de-rabo-preto has a rather specialized feeding ecology. Crabs make up the majority of its diet, although in the nonbreeding season, it will also take a broader trophic spectrum. It is a monogamous and relatively social species, which nests colonially on flat islands or islets close to intertidal crab habitats. During the nonbreeding season, it can be found in a wider range of environments where crabs are present, including along estuarine brackish lagoons, stream bars, and open coastal areas with soft substrates (with or without vegetation) or, less frequently, rocky substrates.

Olrog's Gull has a relatively small total population size and is considered by the IUCN to be "Near Threatened." Nesting colonies have only been recorded from a total of 19 different locations within its limited breeding range; however, breeding locations can change from year-to-year, and the species typically nests in only 7–12 locations in any given year. Currently, over 70% of the entire breeding population is concentrated at the Bahía Blanca estuary in Buenos Aires, Argentina. With such a limited breeding range, this species is particularly vulnerable to habitat degradation and disturbances at colonies. Coastal development, recreational fishing, pollution, and unregulated tourism and recreation are the main threats to its continued survival. doi.org/10.2173/bow.olrgul1.02

St Michael's Bridge is a stone arch bridge in the center of the Belgian city of Ghent. The bridge crosses the River Lys, on the south side of the Graslei and the Korenlei. The current monumental bridge was built in the period 1905-1909, after the establishment of the station building. During the 20th century, this pale dove expanded its range spectacularly from the Middle East all the way across Europe. Introduced accidentally into the Bahamas in 1974, it soon spread to the Florida mainland. Its expansion westward and northward from there since the 1980s has been remarkable, and the species is now common to abundant across much of North America, as far northwest as Oregon and Washington. Oddly, the expansion has not yet penetrated the northeastern states, aside from a few records of strays. (Audubon Field Guide)
