A dry early-summer day and I walked northward along the Meuse River to my favorite secluded right-bank indented swimming place near some Willow Trees. Remarkably few insects out but the fields were full of a variety of Daisies and Thistles and Knapweed and Wild Herbs of various sorts. The air was thick with their scent; but I saw only busy Bumblebees, lots of Flies, some Hoverflies, a Grasshopper or two and a few bees. One - an Andrena of some sort - flitted nervously back and forth and back again among the pretty Knapweed heads. Here she's doing her thing. As I did mine in the soothing waters of the Meuse. She returned home as did I; but I to some Ricard.

These cute little guys' range does not normally extend to Washington. Their range seems to be creeping northward across the Columbia River.
Driving northward for an hour through two whiteout snow squalls, finally having to turn back when the roads got too bad (should have gotten those new tires last week). I was taunted all the way home as the skies cleared and all sorts of dramatic skies began to open with nowhere to stop. I finally stopped at Hickory Hill Orchard to capture the Sun before it finally went down. Supposedly the same conditions happened here as well but you would never know it snowed, as quickly as it came it was gone again leaving nothing but wet and messy roads.
Running northward up the valley toward Heber City we find UP 618 approaching an old portholed battleship Buick - February 6, 2007.

The Migration

March in Minnesota can be a month of extremes but there are migratory birds that make the journey to our state anyhow. The Bird Watcher Digest says this about March arrivals:
"Bald eagles follow water northward. Waterfowl, including swans, begin returning to the state. Canada geese are common. American kestrels make an appearance. Eastern bluebirds and wood ducks return to explore nesting sites.
American robins, killdeer, great blue herons, red-winged blackbirds, tree swallows, American woodcock, and common grackles return."
Many returning birds can endure a spring snowstorm or two as they can vary their diets until spring and early summer actually arrive. This tree swallow has fluffed up his feathers to get through a windy cold March day as he vows he will come back a couple weeks later next year.

Noticed this shot the other day. Now that the sun is slightly on the opposite side of the standard TPL+brewery shot at the Budweiser plant, I thought I'd try a northward view.
The Prairie Line (TPLX, ex-ALS) SW1500 1002 shoves three hoppers into InBev's Anheuser-Busch brewery at St. Louis, MO, while the iconic Gateway Arch looms in the background. 1002 just about fits the gap...

I caught this Willet in mid-flight, with a crashing Lake Michigan wave frothing in the background.
This was one of about 50 Willets that stopped by our shore to rest and feed for a day or two during their migration northward.

CSX CW44AC No. 134 takes an empty unit coal train, operating west on the Piedmont Subdivision, across the RF&P Subdivision at Doswell, VA on Jan. 10, 1999. As information, the station, southward signal mast and HN tower remain. The northward signals protecting the diamond and the 50 mph speed board are gone. HN tower is likely living on borrowed time, It is unused and CSX has allowed it to deteriorate.

My first warbler of the season.
Most warblers leave the continental U.S. for winter, but the Pine Warbler stays in the Southeast and is one of the first to return northward in spring. It arrives as early as February in areas just north of the wintering range and may begin breeding by late April.

I was very happy to encounter this little bird while on my walk this morning.
"Once thought of as a southern species, the Tufted Titmouse has steadily expanded its range northward. At the start of the 20th century, this species was found only as far north as New Jersey and Iowa. Today, it reaches southern Quebec and Ontario. Researchers think this expansion is likely due to warming winters, an increase in winter bird-feeding, and large areas of maturing woodland.
Near Ayr, Ontario.
Sedona, Coconino National Forest, Arizona, USA
Sedona is a city of about 10,000 people within the Coconino National Forest. It is famous for its array of red sandstone formations.
Sedona is located just at the base of the Mogollon Rim, an escarpment that runs east-west through the middle of Arizona and defines the boundary between the Colorado Plateau to the north, and the Basin and Range to the south. The Mogollon Rim is about 200 miles long, and ranges between 2000 and 3000 feet in height.
In the Sedona region, erosion has gradually eaten away at the rim, moving it northward a distance of about four miles and leaving behind spectacular and picturesque canyons and buttes. The deep red color for which Sedona is famous is due to the presence of hematite (iron oxide, i,e. rust) that stains the sandstone of the Schnebly Hill and Hermit Shale layers.

Chicago & North Western AC4400CW No. 8824 leads a 96 car Hinkle, Oregon to Yermo, California manifest freight through Lake Point, Utah on March 3, 1996. This northward perspective, from the foothills of the Oquirrh Mountains, includes Interstate 80, the former Western Pacific mainline to California, the Great Salt Lake, Promontory Point, and Antelope Island.
The grueling hike up the mountain definitely pays off with the breathtaking views. To the far right people are sitting on Balanced Rock. We had the pups with us so didn't even try to climb up because pups don't practice social distancing and I didn't want them climbing all over the people. I used my the wide angle lens my son gifted me for my birthday for this shot. I love this lens! Stone Mountain (my other favorite place to hike) and Doughton Park are out there somewhere. There are no guardrails so being aware of your surroundings is imperative on the treacherous rocks.
Takagariyama is a hill several km east of Oomachi city in Central Japan. This photo clearly shows that Azumino valley is a tectonic depression. The mountain range in the photo is called Northern Japan Alps (北アルプス Kita Alps). Highest peaks of Kita Alps are more or less 3,000m while the bottom of valley is 550-800m.

Kanawa River Railroad KN381 catches some sun on its northward journey as it the rail line tries the best it can to follow Leading Creek at a very remote area near Carpenter, Ohio. The 6001 has probably seen better days with its previous owner, Norfolk Southern, or maybe not??
Flying low just above Lake Michigan, these Cormorants were migratating northward on May 1st, 2025.

Srinagar Danda is a forested hill at 1,500m behind Tansen's urban area. It offers a panoramic view of Himalayas including Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna (8,091m) and Manaslu (8,163m), if weather permits. Manaslu was hidden under the clouds when I visited.
Peaks of high mountains are often easier to spot from the distance as their views can be blocked by minor peaks if you get closer. Tansen is an unexpectedly nice Himalaya viewpoint, in particular, if you have a good long lens.
Fujimi (富士見) is the easternmost Suwa municipality in Nagano prefecture. It is sandwiched between Yatusgatake volcano to the north and Minami Alps to the south.
This is a northward view.
Roseate skimmers expand northward into our area on rare occasions - but get pushed back when we have a cold Winter (speaking of which: 22-23o in our forecast - yikes!). The pink-purple males are our only dragonfly of that color but tan females are easier to overlook. And we don't see many egrets around here. In the cattails @ the wetlands, North Georgia
