It's as if the sunflowers already knew what was about to happen, as they tilted their heads as if that would bring something. Thank you little suns for this opportunity.

On Munich's Fröttmaninger Heide one blade from Portugal in the southwest of Europe meets another from Finland in the northeast of Europe. There's about 3,400 km great circle distance between the locations of the two knife makers - and Munich is not on that great circle.... 😁.

The Finnish blade is a Wood Jewel "Vuolu 10", the Portuguese blade is a José da Cruz "Merendeira".

A pretty late afternoon to be hiking in this mountainous area of eastern Oregon.

Thingvallavatn "Lake of the Plains of Parliament"

With an area of around 84 km2, it is the largest (natural) lake in Iceland. Its maximum depth is 114 meters, or 13 m below sea level.

The northern end of the lake is part of Þingvellir National Park. The islands in the lake are of volcanic origin. As the park is part of the plate ridge area that crosses the entire island from southwest to northeast, one can see a lot of cracks, the largest of which is Almannagjá. Earthquakes are therefore quite frequent

Devils Tower National Monument, a unique and striking geologic wonder steeped in Native American legend, is a modern-day national park and climbers' challenge. Devils Tower sits across the state line in northeast Wyoming. The Tower is a solitary, stump-shaped granite formation that looms 1,267 feet above the tree-lined Belle Fourche River Valley, like a skyscraper in the country. Once hidden below the earth’s surface, erosion has stripped away the softer rock layers revealing the Tower.

The two-square-mile park surrounding the tower was proclaimed the nation’s first national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. The park is covered with pine forests, woodlands, and grasslands. While visiting the park you are bound to see deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife. The mountain’s markings are the basis for Native American legend. One legend has it that a giant bear clawed the grooves into the mountainside while chasing several young Indian maidens. Known by several northern plains tribes as Bears Lodge, it is a sacred site of worship for many American Indians. Devils Tower is also remembered as the movie location for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

The stone pillar is about 1,000 feet in diameter at the bottom and 275 feet at the top and that makes it the premier rock climbing challenge in the Black Hills. Hikers enjoy the Monument’s trails. The 1.25-mile Tower Trail encircles the base. This self-guided hike offers close-up views of the forest and wildlife, not to mention spectacular views of the Tower itself. The Red Beds Trail covers a much wider three-mile loop around the tower.

City buildings in Aberdeen, 10 April 2022.

Construction of this building, Marischal College, commenced in 1835 (or 1837 depending on source) on a site occupied since 1593 by Marischal College and University of Aberdeen. Since 2011 it has been leased by Aberdeen City Council. It is the second biggest granite building in the world, exceeded in size only by Palacio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial in Spain.

Just north of my home from a country road overlooking a pasture with a lonely Cottonwood tree. I took a lot of photos of this setting of the sun. I did not expect it to light up as it did. Patience sometimes pays.

There was a whole village of these falling down sheds and barns by the road near Lawrence KS. There were no trespassing signs all over the place though so my heaven was not complete. Would have loved to be able to walk amongst them and get many more shots.

Bet a lot of you know the feeling when your stuck in because of the weather, especially the last few months, here in the Northeast. Well undeterred by the conditions I ventured out, down to my local beach and Steetley Pier.

The conditions were horrible but challenging and you know what they say "practice makes perfect" Well I need as much practice as I can get lol!

Abandoned school on Stage Road, a half-mile from the historic Hat Creek Stagecoach Station, northeast of Lusk, Wyoming in Niobrara County.

I couldn’t find any information online about the school, but it must be old, with the water pump and the horse hitching post in the yard.

This was along one of the most dangerous parts of the Cheyenne-Deadwood stagecoach line, established when gold was discovered in the Black Hills in 1874. Highway robberies and attacks by Indians defending their land were common, and the Army established a small post nearby to protect miners traveling along the road.

After shooting the school, I saw some nice shots at the station, but unfortunately it started pouring rain.

Offered once again as a comparison to the preceding image of Amtrak 662 which was captured at nearly the same angle over 23 years later. Amtrak 916 leads a regional consist east through Edison, NJ. Based on the time of day and consist, this may have been train 95, the Old Dominion. Back then trains still carried names, although the "Northeast Direct" designation (a precursor to today's Northeast Regional service) did appear in the timetable as well.

Hverir, Northeast Iceland 20200802

Hverir is one of the most active geothermal areas in all of Iceland. Also known as Hverarönd, this region stands out for its ochre-colored landscapes and the numerous fumaroles and boiling mud pools dotted over its moon-like terrain.

In spite of the intense smell of sulfur, its curious geothermal activity entices visitors to walk along Hverir's trails and marvel at the natural wonders of Earth. Due to the high heats of the subsoil at Hverir, it's very important not to leave the signposted paths, both to preserve the impressive landscapes and to avoid getting burned by the steam from the fumaroles or putting your foot in a boiling mire!
