Beginning a series of posts that have little in common except that they were taken two or more years ago.
From Wikipedia:
The North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is a large quill-covered rodent in the New World porcupine family. It is the second largest rodent in North America after the North American beaver.
The word "porcupine" comes from the middle or old French word porcespin, which means 'thorn pig'.
We found this prickly guy/gal in Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge near Walden, Colorado.
A powerful black and white capture of North Falls at Silver Falls State Park. Shot at 1/80 second, the photograph freezes the immediate force of the water and the resulting mist, conveying the raw, dynamic energy of the fall.
October 7, 2016: If you can get to the White Mountains now, I highly recommend the Littleton to Mt. Washington Hotel (Zealand Notch) area. The colors are spectacular this year with vibrant reds.
This is a view from the summit of North Sugarloaf with a view of Middle Sugarloaf, and you can easily hike both in one go. The Sugarloafs are a true moderate hike (easy if you are in shape, difficult but doable if you are out of shape) with great views from their summits.
The north end of Quadra Island as seen from Tyee Spit in Campbell River, BC.
"From one end to the other, Quadra Island measure 37 km (23 miles) as the eagle flies. Its wide northern end, rising up in rocky bluffs and mountainous peaks, is short on roads and population, but to make up for that it has a scattering of lovely lakes and a sprawl of hiking trails. Some areas here still are old growth, but almost all of the island's forests are second growth dating from the late [19th] to the early [20th] century. As yet the island is still largely forested, but clearcut logging marches on--sometimes too close for comfort.
"The island's contours seem to have been largely cut out with a fretsaw, creating an abundance of bays, coves, harbours and headlands along its ragged coast, with the leftover bits flung aside to form offshore islands...all along with Quadra itself, part of the Discovery Islands of the east coast of Vancouver Island. Beaches are few--mostly pebbly--and all of them surrender to a full moon's high tide."

North American Moose (Alces alces) bull on the trail of a cow during the breeding season or "rut" in the mountain forests of Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada.
The occurrence was just before the twilight period under heavy cloud cover so light was at a premium.

On my first day in search of yellow aspens, I took Highway 168 up into the Sierras. I was in awe at the amount of aspens that were changing color all along the drive. I took a side road up to North Lake and took in this great view from one of the parking areas. I drove around the area and there are quite a few aspens all around the lake and further up the road. Tomorrow I'm off to the Mammoth Lake area and hopefully a lot of yellow aspens.

That year the aspens on the east side of North Lake had dropped their leaves early. Yet color was to be had in the sky and water when the setting sun lit up a band of clouds.
This train heads east on the ex-NYC Kankakee Belt Line. The engine is crossing the E-L eastbound track and then the C&O onto the E-L westbound main. The tower is in the distance. September 1972
Just North of Clearwater BC, the water sure is clear with the elegant deep blues and greens from the icefields in the Rockies. Passing the old station name of North Thompson which doesn't appear anymore on modern timetables, an empty coal drag bound for Alberta crosses a small bridge over the river the station is named after.
