Comments of Richard Cowling as he toured visitors in Laurence Savary exhibition Namaqualand Colours
As part of Namaqualand Colours exhibition in PE, botanist Richard Cowling of NMMU toured visitors among the exhibits, as if they were in Namaqualand.
I recorded some of his comments…
Namaqualand desert is unique because
the diversity of the succulents is far greater than in other deserts (eg 1 ha in NQ has 6 times more species than in other deserts, NQ surface contains more species than all the Middle East)
the small size of the succulents (tiny compared the succulents occuring in other deserts of the world (eg massive size of cactii in winter desert of America)
the rainfall is low but regular while other deserts can have higher but more irregular rainfall (thus obliging plants to have a larger size to survive for longer periods). The reliable rainfall allows plants to keeps their roots close to surface.
All rainfall and flowering activity takes place during the winter months
climate is milder than in other deserts
Namaqualand region limits are:
South : Van Rynsdorp North: Richtersveld West: coast East: escarpement
