Two iconic warbirds, side by side - the vibrant “Wacky Wabbit” Harvard and the NHS tribute Spitfire. Both aircraft honour the past in their own way: one as a rugged WWII trainer, the other as a symbol of national gratitude. A striking scene that blends aviation history with modern-day meaning.

NHS staff, patients and members of the general public gathered outside the QE Hospital in Gateshead today to see Aircraft Restoration Company's Supermarine Spitfire PRXI PL983 ‘L’ performing a flypast over the Hospital. The Spitfire has spent the summer performing flypasts over all the NHS hospitals in the U.K. as a special thank you to the NHS staff dealing with COVID19.

The aircraft has been painted with special "Thank U NHS" titles on the underside of the wings and on the side of the aircraft are up to 8,000 handwritten names of supporters to the cause who have donated £10 or more.

The flight was initially scheduled for a week earlier however, due to inclement weather on route, it was postponed. Although there were perfect blue skies 10 minutes before the flypast, the clouds rolled in just as the spitfire was on route to the hospital. Difficult photography conditions, I probably wouldn't have uploaded the photos usually, but the message is more important. Thank you, NHS. -22/09/2020

Flown by John Romain, the beautiful Supermarine Spitfire PR.XI PL983/L (aka G-PRXI) on her way around the South of England in salute to the wonderful NHS

Here she is sliding by South of Shoreham Airport on her way between Brighton and Worthing before heading for Goodwood to land and no doubt refuel and some refreshments

Whilst the 'Thank U NHS' notation under her wings is highly visible - not apparent here are the hundreds of names being added of those who have made donations to NHS Charities - all being added by John Romain's wife Amanda

Spitfire PL983 is a PR.XI variant built for high-altitude photographic reconnaissance, first flying in October 1944 and entering service in 1945 with 4 Squadron. It later served with 2 Squadron in Germany before being gifted to American Air Attaché Livingstone Satterthwaite and subsequently flown by renowned pilot Lettice Curtis in air races. After years of storage and restoration, it was returned to flying condition, becoming known as the “NHS Spitfire” in 2020 when it carried “THANK U NHS” markings to honor healthcare workers, raising over £130,000 for charity .

Went to Guildford Hospital today - panic not , I went to get a shot of the NHS Spitfire !! Now I was very disappointed with my shots , got a good spot looking over the hospital , but when the time came the Spitfire came in from behind and with the sun behind as well . It only did a loop and a half and it was gone heading to Chertsey before going home to Duxford . The Spit had been in the west country earlier , Cornwall , Devon , Somerset etc.

A Spitfire bearing the names of thousands of heroes of the coronavirus pandemic has performed flypasts of hospitals across the south of England.

The NHS Spitfire, which also has "Thank U NHS" emblazoned on the underside of its wings, visited 20 hospitals from Essex to Dorset.

Its owners are handwriting 80,000 names on the aircraft to help raise money for NHS Charities Together.

The appeal has so far raised more than £20,000.

John Romain, pilot and founder of the Aircraft Restoration Company, said: "It's been fantastic. To see the people on the ground waving at you is humbling. The reaction from the people on the ground and the support has been amazing."

The former World War Two reconnaissance Spitfire PL983 'L', based at Duxford in Cambridgeshire, had been conducting flypasts over neighbouring villages during the Thursday Clap For Carers events during the peak of the coronavirus crisis.

People have been invited to nominate the names of "local heroes" who have helped or inspired them during the Covid-19 pandemic to add to the aircraft in return for a minimum £10 donation to NHS charities.

The latest aircraft to emerge from the workshop of Historic Flying Ltd (HFL) at Duxford, is Spitfire PRXI PL983/G-PRXI. It wears the wartime Photo reconnaissance Blue livery of its time serving in Europe with 4 squadron before it later passed to 2 squadron in post war occupied Germany. The aircraft was subsequently placed on Contract loan to Vickers-Armstrong who supplied it o the American Air Attaché as a personal transport. Famously raced by wartime Air Transport Auxiliary pilot, Lettice Curtis, it later passed to the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden, who placed it on external static display. A restoration to flying condition was started by a volunteer team, but the collection sold the unfinished aeroplane at auction in April 1983. Purchased by wartime French pilot Roland Frassinet, it became the first Spitfire to be restored by Trent Aero Engineering and made its first flight in July 1984 at East Midlands Airport. Sold to collector, Doug Arnold, it featured in the TV series “Piece of Cake” but saw little air display use. Following Arnold’s death in November 1992, PL983 was placed in dismantled storage until being re-assembled at North Weald prior to sale to Justin Fleming in 1999. Operated by Martin Sargeant, it was overhauled and re-flown, but sadly met with a fatal accident at Rouen in France June 2001. Following the conclusion of the accident investigation board, the severely damaged Spitfire was purchased by Aircraft Restoration Company and moved to Duxford in 2003. A rebuild to flying condition has been ongoing for a number of years at Duxford with the fuselage being reconstructed at Airframe Assemblies on the Isle of Wight. Wings are currently under construction at HFL and the correct to type Rolls Royce Merlin 70 has been obtained and overhauled. A correct wrap around clear view windscreen has been fitted to replace the incorrect fighter type assembly latterly fitted. Following the pioneering fitment of a mock camera installation on the Rolls Royce Spitfire PS853, HFL have incorporated the same lens assembly fitment into the side camera hatch on PL983 .

Let's show some appreciation.

Thanks for viewing my Photos - NO UNAUTHORISED USE

Feeling slightly more confident with the benefit of antibodies built up in the last three weeks since my first Covid-19 vaccination I masked up and stepped out from Darnaway Towers to make a purchase from Mr Fishie. On my return I spied this sign in a window of a New Town Property - how apt I thought! Public opinion seems to be completely out of kilter with UK Government Policy. And by coincidence just as I post this I receive an email requesting me to sign a petition by way of protest. After a year of the pandemic, plans to give NHS staff a pay rise of just 1% does seem derisory and insulting to those who have given such hard work and dedication. [1% means an increase of just £3.50 a week in take-home pay for an experienced nurse]

They also have no money or sympathy for pensioners....

I thought this worthy of a picture before the rain washed it away.

My daughter and her family are locked down for the initial 12 weeks due to health status. My daughter found this from my 10 year old granddaughter yesterday. She also did one for the bin men who waved to her this morning as they collected the recycling. I’ll try to catch up with all your posts soon, but in the meantime I may have something in my eye.....

Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.
