Nearly stalling, G&E Shifter R202 crawls across the timber supports of the WV Hwy 20 girder bridge at walking speed, fighting the steep 2.2% grade from Peaser Jct to Quinwood Tunnel.
The seasoned C&O crew sure put this pair of “lightning bolts” through their paces getting their second cut of 28 loads from Green Valley up the mountain on the rusted, worn out jointed rail of the former Hominy Creek sub of the NF&G. What a show!
R202 is headed down the slide from Clearco, eventually for a run UP another hillside where a double is involved. It is strange territory out here indeed. Lots of things can go wrong, but I’d say a 3 day turn around from receiving empties, to loading, and finally arriving back at Meadow Creek ain’t that bad.
Clearly we are past peak. Post peak is apparently where I ended up and ya just gotta roll with it. It had been an incredibly dry summer and early fall for WV. Colors were never going jump out at you regardless.
Search out a track chart for the territory. It is sure to entertain.
NF&G’s “Snow Grade” proves to be a formidable apponent for Rainelle Mine Run R202’s pair of steerable trucked GE’s as they struggle to lift their second cut of 38 loads up the mountain to Spring Dale, Wv. Not even close to being the steepest, this 3.5 mile section of the Sewell Valley averages 1.7%, tops out at 2.45%, and features a modest 44 curves with the tightest being 22°.
