Tonight I was troubleshooting a few problems on a network and looking to replace the switch with a spare from home. After I had mapped out the network, tested and labelled all the cabling, I installed the switch in the picture. Only to find that most of the ports on said switch have now failed :(.
I replaced the existing switch, localised the ports and ensured everything was working fully before the end of a frustrating evening.
I like the composition of this pic with the blurred foreground giving great focus on some of the tools I'd been using and the infamous switch.

Vor nicht mal einem Jahr entschloß ich mich, einen der drei rottigen Netgear GS108T, die als Etagen-Switche mein Netz in GT verteilen, durch einen Cisco SLM2008 zu ersetzen (vgl. blogdoch.net/index.php?entry=entry101023-120648). Versuchsweise, denn mit den Netgears habe ich ja schon niederschmetternde Erfahrungen gemacht (und jüngst hat der in GT ausgemusterte, der nun in Berlin switcht, sich wieder unbeliebt gemacht: alle Ports ohne Grund abgeschaltet, tolle Wurst) und ich wollte nicht noch mehr Geld versenken. Nun, bislang war der SLM2008 unauffällig, was durchaus positiv zu verstehen ist. Bis heute, denn nun ist offensichtlich das Netzteil zerbröselt, plötzlich jedenfalls war nix mehr mit IP und bei der Fehlersuche war das Fehlen jeglicher Beleuchtung des SLM ein klarer Indikator ... Der Test an anderer Steckdose schlug fehl, ein etwas leistungsfähigeres Steckernetzteil einer alten Fritzbox hingegen hauchte dem SLM wieder Leben ein. Lebens- bzw. Einsatzdauer unter 12 Monaten; mal ehrlich, liebe Cisco, das ist auch für ein unter-Hundert-Euro-Gerät mehr als schwach :-(
